Conclusion

Oxford and Cambridge are the oldest and most
prestigious universities in Britain. Know
together as “Oxbrige”, they have been chosen
as national icons. The Oxbrige buildsings are
often arranged round a square of grass. They
are called ‘quads’ in Oxford and ‘courts’ in
Cambridge.
Let’s get acquainted with the three of the oldest of
them:


It is the first Englishspeaking University in
the UK. The exact date of
foundation is unknown,
there is evidence that
training took place in
1096. Oxford is a
mandatory training
institution for high
society members.

In Oxford you can
learn different fields
of knowledge:
mathematics,
physics, social and
natural sciences and
medicine.

Oxford University has educated such people as
the philosopher Thomas More, the writer Oscar
Wilde, the English kings Edward VII and
Edward VIII, the Prime Ministers of Great
Britain Margaret Thatcher, David Cameron and
many other representatives of science, politics
and culture.
Cambridge University
motto “Hinc lucem et pocula sacra”

The official status of the University is the
privileged charitable institution. Cambridge is
the second oldest university of Britain, which
was founded in the 13th century. Today there
are more than twenty colleges in Cambridge
University.

The oldest college is Peterhouse, which was
founded in 1284. The most famous is probably
King’s College, because of its magnificent
chapel. The University was only for men until
1871. In 1871 the first women’s college was
opened.

Notable alumni of Cambrige University are
Charles Darwin, the world — famous English
naturalist and explorer;
Isaac Newton, the great physicist,
mathematician, engineer and astronomer, the
founder of classical physics;
Lord Byron, the great English romantic poet;
Vladimir Nabokov, the world — famous
Russian-American novelist.
St Andrews University
motto “Aien aristeuein”

It is the oldest
University in
Scotland It was
founded between
1410 and 1413. It
is located in the
town of St
Andrews along the
North sea coast.

The University is
divided into four
faculties: science,
arts, medicine and
theology. The
faculty of science
includes both natural
and social sciences.

Notable alumni of St Andrews University are
James I, the king of Scotland;
Prince William, the son of Charles, Prince of
Wales and grandson of the British Queen
Elizabeth II;
James Gregory, the mathematician and
astronomer, one of the founders of mathematical
analysis
James W. Black, a pharmacologist, the Nobel
laureate of 1988 in the field of medicine.
