What exactly does the corpus callosum do? Complete or
partial destruction of its fibers has few long-term neurological or psychological consequences that can be detected, except by trained observers. Nevertheless, when the right
questions are asked, the effects of callosal damage turn out to
be clear and even dramatic. In the early 1950s, Roger Sperry
began asking the rlght questions. As a result, a wealth of
information has been gathered on the anatomy, physiology,
and psychology of the corpus callosum. It is thus fitting that
this volume, which provides an overview of current understanding of callosal organization and function, is dedicated to
Two Hemispheres-One Brain is a collection of papers presented at the Sixth International Symposium of Neuroscience of the Centre de Recherche en Sciences Neurologiques
de YUniversitC de Montreal, held on May 16-18, 1984. The
volume contains six parts. The initial sec+ion consists of papers on the philosophical implications of brain bisection in
humans. In Part 11, the structural organization of the corpus
callosum is discussed. Among other topics, the topography
of callosal fibers, callosal development, and the relationship
between callosal anatomy and hemisphere specialization are
considered. In the third section, physiological studies of the
callosum are described, particularly with respect to the interhemispheric integration of visual information. This emphasis on visual integration is continued in the fourth section,
which is focused on behavioral studies in experimental animals. The final two sections are on neuropsychological studies in split-brain and normal human subjects.
The thirty-four papers in this volume constitute an excellent summary of current knowledge about the corpus callosum and it is destined to become a classic in the field.

These various multi-authored monographs provide information on a similar subject in a variety of ways. The Battistin
and Gerstenbrand book presents the proceedings of a symposium held in Padim in May 1985. Chapters by authoritative scientists cover PET, SPECT, and NMR spectroscopy
and imaging. Most iof the contributors are well-known authorities on their sutbjects, and it was perhaps to be expected
that much of the PET section is devoted to clinical evaluation. The text is typescript photo offset and the illustrations
are satisfactory.
Heiss et al provide an atlas of PET examinations of the brain
studied under a variety of normal and abnormal conditions.
Most of the illustrations come from Cologne but many come
from other well-known PET centers and the reproduction is
excellent. The book .is produced in German and English.
Phelps, Mazziotta, and Schelbert have put together the best
of the PET volumes reviewed here. The chapters, all written
by experts, start with the physiological basics of each of the
systems being examined and thoroughly explore both the
brain and heart in light of present knowledge. In a fastmoving field the book represents the wrirten word on PET
up to 1984.

Sokoloff's Brain Imging and Grain Fanrtion presents the
proceedings from the Association for Research of Nervous
and Mental Disease's 1983 Meeting, moving from basic principles to clinical studies in both neurology and psychiatry in
18 chapters. The final three chapters discuss the present state
and future of NMR. The relatively short text offers a useful

Trimble's text, despite its title, is largely a descriptive monograph of PET and isotope-based studies of CBF and NMR in
psychiatry that also includes chapters on epilepsy and dementia. The book provides a useful introduction to brain
imaging techniques.
