the formation of the myelin sheath has
been made possible.”
The first chapter gives a brief account
of Schwann, the development of his concepts, and the impact of those of Ranvier
and Cajal. Other chapters contain descriptions of light microscopic, electron microscopic and tissue culture observations on
peripheral nerves and Schwann cells.
There are also chapters on nerve endings,
degeneration and regeneration, and neoplasms.
The book is amply illustrated but the
reproduction of some of the electron micrographs leaves something l : be
~ desired.
There is a fairly extensive bibliography
with titles and pages but the author states
that, although he tried to make himself
“conversant with all aspects of the extensive literature,” he concentrated on recent
publications and those with extensive lists
of earlier literature. There is no index.

A FUNCTIONAL APPROACH TO NEUROANATOMY. By Earl Lawrence House
and Ben Pansky. ix
494 pages, illustrated. $12.50. McGraw-Hill Book Co.,
Inc., New York. 1960.

This book was written primarily with
the medical student in mind; it is designed
to meet the needs of basic courses in
neuroanatomy at a time when time itself
has became a great factor in medical
education.
Although the approach is functional, as
the title anounces, it is also solidly based
on structure. After a few chapters of general anatomy, including the blood supply
and embryology, the chapter headings are
in terms of function. Almost immediately,
however, the pen of Pansky translates the
function into a structural diagram. These
drawings and diagrams are original and
both skillfully and lucidly executed. They
are obviously by someone steeped in the
morphology of the nervous system. There
are concise summaries, many illustrative
clinical cases, and an atlas of the wellknown Villiger cross sections at the end of
the book. References to the literature are
omitted from the text, but a list of impor-
