The aim of the project is investigation of the problem of unpopularity of reading among students. Man is “the only animal which makes books”. Books surround us from birth to death. Books make us what we are. From books you can learn almost anything. We use different books every day. For studying our problem I have held sociological questionnaire among students of our school. 1. Do you often visit library? 2. What library do you use more often? 3. Do librarians help you choose the book? 4. Do you participate in activities held by libraries? 5. What activities do you want to be held? 6. Does your family read? 7. What do you read? 8. Do you have home library? SCHOOL LIBRARY DISTRICT LIBRARY has 23000 books has 8000 student`s books about 50 % of students visit s chool library has more 30000 books 53% of students visit district library I asked librarians: " What help do you offer in shaping reader's tastes? “ Here is what they answered: Tatyana Mikhaylovna , school librarian : « The help of the librarian is an important part of work of the library. We offer the students literature according to their age: elementary classes are offered fairy tales,short tales with large letters, middle classes - adventures, senior classes – books about love. But usually students ask books on school program » . Lyudmila Petrovna, district librarian : « Interests are being revealed during a conversation. We offer material, which we have at the moment and this person is registered in the file - cabinet. But if we have new books, journals, we inform our readers on telephone or in spoken form ». Both librarians note such phenomenon: students borrow basically books on school program. In Tatyana Mikhaylovna`s opinion "children do not read much because of their laziness”. The librarian has touched upon such problem: “children`s interest to books is not supported by family". The book becomes material value in a family. Reading develops fantasy, thinking. When we read a book images, feelings, emotions appear. What I like most about the project is contact with librarians of the school and district libraries and with students` auditorium. The main result is meeting with reading interests of students and their parents, revealing main problems in this area and reasons of these problems. If we know the problems and their reasons, we will find decision.
