Главная часть
The theme of our project was "Struggling for One Victory". Our aim was studying historic materials and facts about the participation of Great Britain, the United States of America and the Soviet Union in the Second World War
-to explore the role of these countries in the Great Victory;
-to underline the importance of this Victory for the whole mankind;
-to remind of the fascism victims;
-to prevent historic falsification;
-to develop tolerant and patriotic relation to other people.
The Second World War... Sixty-five years have already passed. But these words awake pain and sorrow in the heart of everybody. There is no family in our country that didn't lose either a father, a mother, a brother or any other member. People all over the world arose and withstood fascists. But why did they decide to unite and struggle together?
Let's consider some historic facts.
After the First World War Adolf Hitler founded the Nazi Party in Germany. Together with the followers he began to spread his beliefs. Hitler called the German people a superior race, which must rule the world. Soon Hitler made himself the dictator of Germany and began preparing for war. The Nazis oppressed anyone whose race, religion or politics they didn't like. They built huge concentration camps. Anyone who was considered an enemy was sent to these camps. In the concentration camps people were forced to work as slaves. Those who couldn't bear the difficulties were killed immediately.
Such countries as Italy and Japan joined Germany and formed the alliance called the Axis. They wanted to conquer and enslave the people of the other countries. Their aims were cruel and inhuman. So on September, 1st, 1939 Germany invaded Poland. That was the beginning of the World War II.
Due to its tactic of "blitzkrieg" (or lightening war) practically in a year Germany invaded such countries as Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. French army was thought to be strong but it was defeated in a few weeks. But there were countries which could give a repulse to Fascism. By June 1940 Britain stood along against the Nazis. German planes made bombing raids against British cities, railways and factories. All nights long the bombs dropped. Hitler's plan was to break the spirit of the British and destroy their ability to defend themselves. But the British royal Force shot down many German planes and Germany was not able to fulfill its plan of invading the country. This was the first great victory!
The next fatal mistake of the Axis was the Japanese attack of the Pearl Harbour in Hawaii. It was in December,7th ,1941. Japanese planes suddenly appeared in the sky over Hawaii. Hundreds of bombs fell on the ships. In a few hours many of them were damaged or sunk. More than 2,000 people were killed.
This attack shocked Americans. So, on December, 8th, 1941, the United States declared war on Japan, Germany and Italy.
The Americans could quickly rebuild their fleet and in June 1942 they won a huge battle near the Midway Island. It took the United States three years to push the Japanese forces back to their country.
But the greatest mistake of the Fascists was an attack of the Soviet Union the most powerful nation of the world. It was the beginning of the end for Germany.
German army attacked Soviet Union undeclared. It was on the 22nd June, 1941. And by December, 1941 our losses were nearly 5 million people. Fascists occupied the territory of the 5th Soviet Republics and a lot of great industrial centers. Millions of people were cut down from the home front or sent to concentration camps and Germany as slaves. German troops felt themselves as hosts on our territory.
We can't but say about the blockade of Leningrad. People there had to die of hunger and cold.
Nevertheless German Army was stopped and the plan "Barbarossa" was not fulfilled. During the winter of 1941-1942 there was a counter-offensive of Soviet Army near Moscow. It had a great important significance Moscow, Tula regions and some districts in Smolensk and Kalinin regions were set free.
In 1943 Soviet Army wan the Kursk battle. The losses were huge but slowly our troops pressed the German Army.
So on the 28th November, 1943 I. Stalin, W. Churchill and F. Roosevelt the leaders of Russia, Great Britain and the USA gathered to the conference in Teheran. The main question discussed there was the unification and the beginning of the second front.
After this conference allies began to crush Fascists Army and move towards each other from the West and the East. On 25th April, 1945 Soviet Army met American troops on the river Elbe. And on the 8th May, 1945 the War was over with the unquestioning capitulation of German Armed Forces. The battle actions lasted 1418 days.
Here you see the diagramme of the people's death during the World War II. It's clearly seen that the Soviet Union had the greatest losses (approximately 24 million people). The USA and Great Britain lost nearly one million people everyone. Germany lost nearly eight million people. So the losses of the "Allied Forces" were 4 times larger than the losses of the "Axes".
The 9th of May. It was the happiest moment of everybody's life. It seemed that nothing could be better and more important. There was one greatest joy uniting all people. And only then people understood that they were different because they lived in different parts of the world, had different cultures, religions, traditions and customs, but they were alike because there was the one victory that made them happy.
Having studied the historical facts about World War II we made sure that all countries needed one victory in spite of the difference in their mentality, culture and political views. Different nations could overcome their disagreements and contradictions. A lot of people had the only wish to become free and independent. This great dream came true and fascism was destroyed. But now our goal is always remember the exploit of our forefathers. We mustn't allow those awful events to come true again. Let's do it for war victims, for ourselves and for our ancestors!
(Wait for me)
K.Simonov/A.Ewing
Wait for me and I'll retirn
Dear one, only wait;
Hen the leaves of autumn burn
Round our garden gate;
Wait when winter winds blow free,
Wait through summer's sun;
Others may forgotten be
Ere the fight is won;
But, when days that endless creep
Bring no word from me,
Still your lonely vigil keep,
Dear one, wait for me.
Wait for me and I'll return.
Some may faithless be;
Call you fool to wait and yearn,
Say "Forger and be free".
Though my mother weep for me
And our little son;
Though our friends in sympathy
Gather one by one;
When they raise a glass with pride
To my memory,
Darling, put your glass aside,
Smiling, wait for me.
Safely through the fire you bring me
-Waiting there for me.
Wait for me and I'll return.
Love as you before;
Some will say who cannot learn,
"He was lucky in war!"
Only you and I will know;
They won't understand:
I who daily face the foe,
Grasp your waiting hand;
He who in the battle grim,
Holds his head up high,
Knowing someone waits for him - Dear one, cannot die.
Safely through the fire you bring me
-Waiting there for me.
