I.WARM UP. Teacher: Good morning, children. Nice to meet you. During the month and the half we've been working on topic "Healthy way of life" on our English lessons. We've learnt many things and discussed a lot of problems. Today we have a kind of revision and generalization of the learnt information. And the aims of our lesson today are to define what is a way of life, how to make it healthy and why it is necessary to do it. So, let's start! II.BRAINSTORM. Teacher: Look at the picture. (a picture of fat people) What do these people have in general? What can you say about their way of life? Look at the second picture. (a picture of thin people) What can you say about their way of life? You see that these people have absolutely different ways of life and habits. What person do you want to resemble and why? Which of them can be your example to follow? You are right. None of them have healthy way of life. They don't look attractive and they certainly have problems with the health. Health is very important in peoples' life. Since early times they've thought about it and made the conclusion reflected in proverbs and sayings. You'll have some of the proverbs about health. Read them, give the Russian equivalents and explain how you understand these sayings. (Pair work) Proverbs: 1. Agues come on horseback but go away on foot. 2. Wealth is nothing without health. 3. An apple a day keeps the doctors away. 4. Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. So, we can make a conclusion that money won't please you if you don't have good health, it's easy to become ill, but it's difficult to get rid of the illness and, of course, you should follow some rules and advice to be healthy. So, let's speak about these rules. What rules are they? III. READING. Teacher: There are a lot of people in the world and they spend their lives differently. They have various habits which influence people's lives. We'll read the text "Are you looking after yourself?" How do you think what this text will be about? Let's read it and check if you were right. All unknown words are written at the beginning of the text with the translation. Are You Looking After Yourself? Inefficient - неэффективный, бездейственный Vital - жизненно важный To maintain - поддерживать Endurance - выносливость Acne - прыщи Circulation - кровообращение Pace - шаг Stroll - прогулка Everybody knows that health is very important. That's why people are always searching for more ways of looking good and feeling good. Let's look through some recommendations. Firstly, don't be physically inactive. It can make your muscular system inefficient and vital organs undeveloped. As soon as you stop to move you stop to live. Scientists say that exercises are of great value to most individuals because they improve and maintain the general all-round fitness, increase strength, endurance, coordination and as they relax muscles they relax mind. During the day keep active: if you don't get enough exercise you may end up sleepless all night. It's OK if you go to bed late occasionally but if you regularly cut down on your sleep it will soon start a bad effect on your skin. If you get a good night's rest, it will do your appearance the world of good. It is not called beauty sleep for nothing! Lack of sleep can cause acne or dry skin. Make sure you get a good night's sleep by going to bed and getting up at regular times. Most of us live in large polluted cities. If we got more fresh air, we would look healthier and more attractive. A walk is one of the best things you can do for your circulation and appearance. Walking slowly is useful but a quick pace gets more oxygen into your lungs. So don't just go for a pleasant stroll try and find an area that doesn't have much pollution and get moving. Many young people feel guilty about eating too much chocolate and some even say they are addicted to it though there is no evidence to support this. Chocolate doesn't contain a lot of fat in comparison with junk food, for example. So, if your diet is balanced, you needn't feel guilty: eating chocolate in moderation is fine - but don't eat it instead of a proper meal! Much more dangerous is eating between meals, snacking and skipping breakfast. This leads to obesity or different diseases. Moderation in eating is the key to good figure. But there are some habits which are absolutely mortal. They are smoking, alcohol drinking and drugs taking. These habits break down the nerve system and completely destroy the organism. They shorten the life in several times. So if you want to live long and happily take care of your health following some good rules and avoiding bad habits. What was this text about? We're going to work in two groups. Look through this text once again. The first group will make a list of bad habits in our life and the second group will make a list of good habits.(Group work). Bad habits: -taking drugs - drinking alcohol - physical inactivity - sleeping too little - snacking, skipping breakfast - smoking Good habits: - moderation in everything - physical activity - exercising - good night rest - spending time on fresh air - balanced dieting Teacher: Present your cobwebs (spidergrams) explaining your choice. V LISTENING. So in our life we have both bad and good habits. Now we'll listen to two people (a boy Bob and a girl Helen). They speak about their ways of living and attitude to different habits. Listen to the tape for the first time and define what aspects of life were reflected in their stories. (First time listening) Helen: I am not going to be a supermodel. But I think it is very important to be fit and healthy and look nice. Some firms don't employ people who are overweight or who are smokers. I agree with that because smoking affects other people's life, too. I pay a lot of attention to my health. I try to eat only low-fat food, more fruit and vegetables which are rich in vitamins and less sweets. I don't smoke. I don't want to have unhealthy skin and teeth. Besides, I have been doing aerobics for a year. I feel great. And all my friends think I look great. Bob: I have no problems with my health though I am a smoker and a bit overweight. I like smoking. It helps me to relax. I have been smoking since I was 12. All my friends are smokers. I don't want to be the odd one out. I know all the facts, but you only live once, don't you? So why not enjoy yourself? As for dieting I think it is very dangerous. You are what you are. It is impossible to change. Besides, I like chocolate bars, ice cream and the like. Why should I give up such tasty things? Eat only cucumbers? Never! Of course I have some problems with my skin and hair, but I don't want to change. What did they speak about? (They spoke about their appearance, sport , food, fears, health, bad habits). Listen to the tape for the second time and fill in the gaps in the following table.
