My Favourite
Writer
Anna Emelianova
• A lot of people all over
the world like reading
adventure stories.
So do I.
• My favourite adventure
book is “The Life and
Strange Surprising
Adventures of Robinson
Crusoe” by Daniel
Defoe.
• Daniel Defoe was born
in London, his father,
a butcher, was
wealthy enough to give
his son a good
education.
• Daniel was selfreliant, industrious
and responsible. He
was a brilliant
journalist and in
many ways the father
of modern English
periodicals. He was
also a founder of the
realistic novel
• Books about voyages
and new discoveries
were very popular in
the first quater of the
18’th century and
many stories of that
kind had been written.
But Defoe was busy
with politics and he
didn’t think of trying
his hand at it.
• But one story in
“Steel magazine”
attracted his
attention.
• It was about a
Scottish sailor,
who lived quite
alone 4 years and 4
month on a desert
island.
• Defoe’s hero,
Robinson Crusoe
spend 26 years on a
desert island.
• The story was based
on real adventures of
a sailor called
Alexander Selkirk,
but the book contains
a lot of incidents
from the writer’s
imagination.
• The book was
published in 1719
and became very
popular, because
Defoe made the story
very realistic and
everyone believed it.
• Daniel Defoe wrote
many books, but for
“Robinson Crusoe” he
is called “the father
of English prose”
• The novel was a
praising to human
labour and the
triumph of the man
over nature.
• Labour and fortitude
helped Robinson to
overcome the
difficulties. The very
process of hard work
gives him satisfaction.
• Robinson’s most characteristic trait is his
optimism. His guiding principal in life was:
“Never said die” and “In trouble to be troubles is
to have your trouble double.”
• I think, the book is worth reading, it is very
useful for all of us, children and grown-ups.
Besides “Robinson Crusoe”,
Defoe wrote some more
novels which were popular
during his lifetime, but we
do not hear much about
them now.
They are:
-“The Life of Captain
Singleton”,
-“The Fortunes and
Misfortunes of Moll
Flanders”,
-“The History of Colonel
Jack,”’
-“A History of Lady Roxana”.
“Robinson Crusoe” still remained
his best and the most famous
novel.
People in different countries of
the world have been reading it
for hundreds of years and
enjoy that reading
