BIOGRAPHY
Thomas Gray
(December 26, 1716, Cornhill –
July 30, 1771, Cambridge)
- an English poet of the eighteenth
century.
-
a sentimentalist
- the precursor of romanticism
- the historian of literature.
Thomas Gray was born in Cornhill, a suburb of London in the
family of exchange broker and a milliner. He was the fifth of 12 children. He
got the education at Eton College.
Intended by his family for the law, he spent most of his time as an
undergraduate reading classical and modern literature, and playing Vivaldi
and Scarlatti on the harpsichord for relaxation.
In 1734 Gray went up to Cambridge. He found the
curriculum dull. He wrote letters to friends listing all the
things he disliked: the masters ("mad with Pride") and the
Fellows ("sleepy, drunken, dull, illiterate Things.")
Intended by his family for the law, he spent most of his time
as an undergraduate reading classical and modern
literature, and playing Vivaldi and Scarlatti on
the harpsichord for relaxation.
Gray died on 30 July 1771 in Cambridge, and was
buried beside his mother in the churchyard of Stoke
Poges, the setting for his famous Elegy. His grave
can still be seen there.

most famous his work is “Elegy in a country churchyard “("Elegy Written in a
Country borough of Haringey")" (1750), three times was translated into

THE EPITAPH
In the epitaph, Thomas Gray shows his displeasure by the way, that life and
death are divided on this planet. He speaks of the earth as a place that
keeps people now what they are going through this Grand cycle that is
called life. When someone just lays his head on the lap of the earth “this is
no way approving of the way that people put their last resting place.” In the
Epitaph it is shown as people are brought up and shot down in a dark way.
