The Seraph:
Three kinds came riding from far away,
Melchior and Gaspar and Balthasar;
Three wise men out of the east were they,
And they travelled by night an they slept by day,
For their guide was a beautiful, wonderful star.
The star was so beautiful, large and clear,
That all the other stars of the sky
Became a white mist in the atmosphere,
And, by this, they knew that the coming was near
Of the Prince foretold in the prophecy.
So they rode away; and the star stood still,
The only one in the gray of morn.
Yes, it stopped, it stood still of its own free will,
Right over Bethlehem on the hill,
The city of David, where Christ was born.
(The Seraph flies away. The Angels sing the song “Nowel”.)
Angel One:
The first Nowel the angel did say,
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Nowel, Nowel, Nowel, Nowel,
Born is the King of Israel.
Angel Two:
They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the east, beyond them far,
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.
Nowel, Nowel, Nowel, Nowel,
Born is the King of Israel.
Angel Three:
This star drew nigh unto the north-west,
Over Bethlehem it look its rest,
And there it did both stop and stay,
Right over the place where Jesus lay.
Nowel, Nowel, Nowel, Nowel,
Born is the King of Israel.
Angel One:
Just the worst time of the year for a journey…
Angel Two:
… and such a long journey.
Angel Three:
The day is deep and the weather sharp, the dead of winter. A hard time they have
of it.
Angel One:
At the end they preferred to travel all night.
Angel Two:
Yea, all night, sleeping in snatches.
Angel Three:
In the black mid-winter. … Frosty winds.
Angel One:
Earth is hard as iron.
Angel Two:
Water’s like a stone.
Angel Three:
Snow is falling. Snow on snow. Snow on snow.
(The Angels fly away.)
(The Magi go along the road. They meet Women and then an Old Man.)
The Women:
Who are you? And where you from?
We are three Kings of Orient. We are to tell of Jesus Christ who will be born in
Bethlehem tonight. And we are bringing him our gifts: gold, frankincense and
myrrh. Go and tell everyone of Jesus Christ!
(The Women go away.)
The Old Man:
What can I give him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb;
If I were a wise man
I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give him –
Give my heart.
(He follows the Magi. The jingling bells announce Jesus’s birth.)
(Night. The Magi, the Old Man, the people from Bethlehem, the Shepherd and
Joseph sit near the Shepherd’s cave. The choir of the Angels sing the song “Silent
The Angels:
Silent night, holy night,
Darkness flies, all the light.
Shepherds hear the angels sing,
Hallelujah, hail the King:
Jesus the Saviour is here!
Jesus the Saviour is here!
Silent night, holy night,
Wondrous star, lend thy light,
With the angels let us sing,
Hallelujah to the King.
Jesus the Saviour is here.
Jesus the Saviour is here.
(The Midwife and after her Mary with the baby in her arms leave the cave.)
The Midwife:
My soul is magnified, for salvation has been born into Israel.
Oh, Maria, mother of Lord! Let us all sing praises to our heavenly Lord and offer,
in his presence, gold and myrrh and frankincense.
I am Melchior. Here is gold.
Frankincense to offer have I.
My gift is myrrh.
Thank you, Wise Men of Orient, thank you for your rich gifts, for your praising of
my beloved son.
The glorious now behold him arise,
King and God and sacrifice,
Alleluia, Alleluia.
Earth to heavens replies.
