I am a third-year student of Nursing Affair. I am fond of English and Medicine. At the Self-government Day I played the role of an English teacher and it was exciting! I dream of getting higher medical education and visiting London. My teacher told me about the best medical school in the UK. Now I am trying to share information about St George’s with you! HISTORY OF ST GEORGE'S St George’s, University of London (legal name St George’s Hospital Medical School, informally St George’s or SGUL) is the only specialist provider of medical and healthcare higher education in the United Kingdom. St George's is located in Tooting, a lively part of south-west London. In 1733 St George’s Hospital was opened at Lanesborough House at Hyde Park Corner. Medical School was founded in 1836. In 1980 HM Queen Elizabeth II opens the new St George’s Hospital at Tooting. They can walk from lecture rooms to the laboratories or to the hospital wards with ease. St George's offers a four-year and a five-year medicine degree. It also runs undergraduate degrees in biomedical science and healthcare science. In partnership with Kingston University, the joint Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education offers degrees in physiotherapy, paramedic science, nursing, midwifery, social work and diagnostic or therapeutic radiography. Teaching facilities at the campus include clinical skills laboratories and a patient simulator which allows students to practice based on real-life situations. The university library has around 42,000 books and subscribes to around 10,000 journals. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES St George’s graduates have the opportunity to work in: orthopaedics, care of the elderly, neurological or respiratory care, musculoskeletal outpatients, women’s health, mental illness, paediatrics, terminal care or spinal cord injuries. STUDENT LIFE Just a 15 minute walk from the University campus, one of the best youth hostels provides self-catered single bedrooms. Each flat accommodates four to eight students, sharing a well-equipped kitchen and dining area. Each block includes a common room with a large plasma-screen television, where students can relax and meet friends. STUDENT LIFE The Students' Union organises various activities including fancy dress discos and a Rag Week, the annual fund-raising events for various charities including Cancer Research. Each new student at St George's has a 'mum' or 'dad' in the year above. Senior students help the new students and give them advice about the course. SPORTS St. George’s Hospital Medical School RFC is one of the oldest rugby clubs in the world having been founded in 1863. SPORTS St George's also has a number of other sports clubs including swimming, rowing, cheerleading, volleyball, fencing, football, netball, hockey and participates in various competitions with the five other medical schools within the University of London and that of Imperial College. INTERESTING FACTS In 1796 Edward Jenner (student of St George’s from 1770 to 1774) successfully performs the first vaccination against smallpox. This disease was completely eradicated in 1980. The hide of Blossom, the cow used in Jenner’s smallpox experiment, was presented to St George's by Jenner’s son in 1857 and has remained in the University till now. FAMOUS ALUMNI 1. Patrick Christopher Steptoe (1913–1988), British obstetrician, gynaecologist and pioneer of fertility treatment. Responsible for developing in vitro fertilization. 3. Sir Francis Darwin (1848—1925) - botanist, son of Charles Darwin. 4. Sir John William Fisher (1788–1876), British surgeon. 5. Edward Jenner (1749–1823), English scientist and the first doctor to introduce and study the smallpox vaccine. 6. Harry Hill (1964- ), English comedian, author and television presenter.
