• Henry Ford (1863 - 1947) was an
American industrialist, the owner
of factories on cars
manufacturing, inventor and
author of 161 U.S. patents. His
slogan was "a car for everyone“.
The Ford plant produced the
cheapest cars at the beginning of
the automotive era. The company
"Ford Motor Company" still exists
today.
Facts of biography
• He was born in a family of
emigrants from Ireland, lived on
a farm near Detroit. At the age
of 16, he ran away from home
and went to work in Detroit. In
1891-1899, worked as a
mechanical engineer and later a
chief engineer in "Edison
Illuminating Company ".
Facts of biography
• In 1893 he designed his first car.
From 1899 to 1902 he was coowner of "Detroit automobile
company", but because of
disagreements with the other
owners of the company retired
and in 1903 founded the Ford
Motor company, which initially
produced cars under the brand
Ford A.
Facts of biography
• The Model T was introduced in
1908. It had the steering wheel
on the left. The entire engine
and transmission were enclosed;
the four cylinders were cast in a
solid block; the suspension used
two semi-elliptic springs. The car
was very simple to drive, and
easy and cheap to repair.
Contribution to the
development of industry ...
• He was able to lower the price of
the Model T from $850 to $360
by introducing mass production
assembly line techniques. On an
assembly line each person has
one specific job and can do it
faster and more efficiently.
Contribution to the
development of industry ...
• All new cars were black. Ford
wrote, "Any customer can have a
car painted any color that he
wants so long as it is black". Until
the development of the
assembly line, which mandated
black because of its quicker
drying time, Model Ts were
available in other colors too.
Contribution to the
development of industry ...
• Ford worked his way through
the alphabet, producing various
cars from A to S. Some were
large touring cars whose
development was demanded by
his stockholders. Some, like the
Model N were small, simple,
and practical cars meant to have
a wider appeal.
Contribution to the
development of industry ...
• Ford was one of the first who
realized in practice the idea of
welfare capitalism aimed at
improving the living conditions of
workers and reducing staff
turnover. The focus was on
efficiency — that is, on hiring and
retaining the best employees.
Contribution to the
development of economy ...
• In 1914 Ford implemented a
quite radical for its time
solution, setting the size of
the salary of workers at the
level of $ 5 per working day
(in terms of modernity is
equivalent to about 110 US
dollars).
Contribution to the
development of economy ...
• The first serial Soviet tractor
"Fordson-Putilovets" (1923) was
the Ford tractor of the Fordson
brand processed for production
at Putilovsky plant and
operation into the USSR.
• In 1929 Ford accepted an offer
by the Soviet Government to
provide technical aid in building
the first Soviet automobile GAZ
in Nizhny Novgorod.
Cooperation with the USSR
• The reconstruction of the AMO
Moscow plant in days of the first
five-years period, preparation of
staff for both plants were
realized with the assistance of
"Ford Motors" experts based on
the agreement concluded
between the Government of the
USSR and Ford's firm.
Contribution to the
development of policy ...
• His book "My life, my
achievements" passed about 100
publications in dozens of countries
around the world. His ideas and
production techniques are
described in this book. The
autobiography of the "father" of
the U.S. auto industry is written
brightly, vividly, energetically and
enthusiastically.
Contribution to the
development of culture...
• In my view Henry Ford was the
person thanks to whom technical
progress didn’t stand still.
Although Ford did not invent the
automobile or the assembly line,
he was a man who transformed
the world. He developed and
manufactured the first
automobile that many middle
class Americans could afford.
My personal opinion
• The cars he built changed the
lives of people everywhere. The
impact of Henry Ford’s Model T,
his moving assembly line, his $5
day and his employee
improvement programs
transformed the lives of his
workers. I hope you will agree
these things have their impact
on you today too.
