FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE IS A FOUNDER OF
THE NURSING PROFESSION
FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE IS
CONSIDERED TO BE A FOUNDER OF
THE NURSING PROFESSION. SHE DID
HER
BEST
TO
MAKE
THIS
PROFESSION RESPECTABLE AND
IMPORTANT.
I AM GOING TO BECOME
A
NURSE, SO IT WAS VERY IMPORTANT
FOR ME TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MY
FUTURE PROFESSION BACKGROUND.
SOME HISTORICAL FACTS
IN
THE
PAST
NURSING
WAS
CONSIDERED
TO
BE
A
FEMALE
OCCUPATION. IT WAS CLOSELY LINKED
WITH RELIGION. NUNS AND MONKS DID
MOST OF THE NURSING WORK. LATER
MANY
HOSPITALS
WERE
BUILT.
CONDITIONS
IN
HOSPITALS
WERE
TERRIBLE. THERE WERE RATS AND
INSECTS
THERE.
PATIENTS
OFTEN
SHARED ONE BED. THERE WAS A LACK OF
EVERYTHING.
FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE’S CHILDHOOD
AND YOUTH
F. NIGHTINGALE WAS BORN ON MAY 12,
1820 IN ITALY, FLORENCE. HER FAMILY WAS
RICH AND MOVED IN THE HIGHEST SOCIAL
CLASS. FLORENCE WAS EDUCATED VERY SHE
KNEW ITALIAN, GERMAN, ENGLISH. SINCE
HER CHILDHOOD HER DREAMT TO BECOME A
NURSE. SHE NURSED SICK ANIMALS AND POOR
PEOPLE.
AT THAT TIME NURSING WAS DONE
ONLY BY WOMEN OF THE LOWEST MORAL
CLASS.. OF COURSE FLORENCE’S PARENTS
WERE AGAINST HER DESIRE TO BECOME A
NURSE. THEY WANTED HER TO BE A LADY,
TO HAVE A FAMILY AND CHILDREN.
BUT FLORENCE HAD A VERY STRONG
CHARACTER AND HER FAMILY HAD
NOTHING TO DO BUT ACCEPT HER
DECISION TO STUDY NURSING.
STUDIES IN GERMANY
WHEN SHE WAS 26, SHE WENT TO
GERMANY, WHERE NURSING HAD BEEN
GIVEN A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH. NURSES
WERE TRAINED TO PERFORM NURSING
MANIPULATIONS. THEY WERE TAUGHT
PHARMACY, RELIGION, ETHICS.
SHE
WAS
GIVEN
A
COMPLEX
APPROACH TO NURSING.
THIS METHOD HAD BECOME BASIC IN
THE PROGRAMME SHE WORKED OUT FOR
NURSES’ TRAINING.
LONDON PERIOD
WHEN SHE HAD FINISHED HER
EDUCATION IN GERMANY SHE
CAME BACK TO LONDON. SHE
STARTED TO WORK IN ONE OF THE
MOST FAMOUS HOSPITALS FOR
NOBLE WOMEN. FLORENCE HAD
BEEN WORKING AT NEW METHODS
OF NURSING FOR SEVEN YEARS.
WHEN SHE WAS 33 SHE
BECAME A SUPERINTENDENT OF
THAT HOSPITAL. SHE TRAINED
HER NURSES ACCORDING NEW
METHODS AND ACHIEVED BETTER
RESULTS WITH MINIMUM MEANS.
NEW METHOD OF NURSING
FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE’S METHOD OF NURSING WAS RATHER
SIMPLE:
1. FOLLOWING THE SANITARY STANDARDS
2. PROPER DIET
3. REGULAR AIRING
4. CAREFUL ATTITUDE TO ALL PATIENT’S COMPLAINTS
5. COMPLETE QUARANTINE IN CASES OF INFECTION DISEASES
THE CRIMEAN PERIOD
DURING THE CRIMEAN WAR
THE SITUATION IN BRITISH
HOSPITALS WAS TERRIFYING. A
LOT OF SOLDIERS DIED OF
WOUNDS, INFECTIONS, CHOLERA.
THERE WERE NO MEDICINES,
CLEAN
LINEN,
BANDAGES.
BRITISH SOLDIERS WERE DYING
IN THOUSANDS NOT OF WOUNDS
SO MUCH AS OF SICKNESS. OLD
SOLDIERS DOING THE WORK OF
NURSES KNEW NOTHING ABOUT
IT.
IN
1854
FLORENCE
NIGHTINGALE
WENT
TO
TURKEY, SCUTARY. WHEN SHE
CAME THERE THE DEATH RATE
WAS 60 MEN PER 1000.
SHE SPENT A LOT OF HER
OWN
MONEY
BUYING
EVERYTHING
FOR
THE
HOSPITAL. SHE HAD TO WORK
FOR
24
HOURS
HELPING
DOCTORS, DRESSING WOUNDS,
CLEANING WARDS, COMFORTING
THE DYING.
FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE WAS
ASKED TO SUPERVISE THE WORK OF
ALL BRITISH HOSPITALS IN TURKEY.
SHE REORGANIZED THE HOSPITALS’
WORK,
ELIMINATED
UNSANITARY
CONDITIONS.
SIX MONTH LATER THE DEATH
RATE DROPPED TO 3 PER 1000.
SOLDIERS
WORSHIPPED
HER.
FLORENCE DIDN’T GO HOME UNTIL
LAST SOLDIER LEFT FOR ENGLAND.
AS A RESULT OF DISEASES AND
HARDSHIPS, SHE RETURNED HOME
SEMI-INVALID. SHE OFTEN COULDN’T
LEAVE HER HOUSE AND EVEN HER
BED. BUT SHE WORKED AS MUCH AS
BEFORE.
THE OFFICIALS DIDN’T LIKE HER
BUT BRITISH PEOPLE AND QUEEN
VICTORIA RECOGNIZE HER SOCIAL
ACTIVITIES AND LIKE VERY MUCH.
FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE SPENT THE
REST OF HER LIFE SERVING HUMANITY.
SHE BROUGHT MORE CHANGES IN
ENGLISH LIFE THAN ANY OTHER PRIVATE
PERSON OF HER TIME.
SHE CHANGED THE SYSTEM OF
HOSPITAL ORGANIZATION IN THE ARMY.
SHE MADE THE REFORM OF THE
HEALTH SERVICE IN INDIA.
IN 1858 FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE
WROTE HER FAMOUS BOOK «NOTES OF
NURSING».
IN 1860 FLORENCE STARTED
THE
NIGHTINGALE
TRAINING
SCHOOL
FOR
NURSES.
THE
TRAINING LASTED ONE YEAR.
NURSES WERE TAUGHT HOW TO
PERFORM
NURSING
MANIPULATIONS. THEY ALSO WERE
GIVEN EDUCATION IN PHARMACY,
RELIGION, ETHICS.
HER
SCHOOL BECAME
A
MODEL FOR THE OTHER ONES.
AN ABSTRACT FROM QUEEN VICTORIA’S
LETTER TO F. NIGHTINGALE
WINSDOR CASTLE,
NOVEMBER 1855
DEAR MISS NIGHTINGALE. YOU ARE, I
KNOW WELL AWARE OF THE HIGH SENSE I
ENTERTAIN OF THE CHRISTIAN DEVOTION
WHICH YOU HAVE DISPLAYED DURING
THIS GREAT AND BLOODY WAR, AND I
NEED HARDLY REPEAT TO YOU HOW
WARM MY ADMIRATION IS FOR YOUR
SERVICES WHICH ARE FULLY EQUAL TO
THOSE OF MY DEAR AND BRAVE …
VICTORIA
REGINA
F. NIGHTINGALE CHANGED THE
IDEA OF HOSPITAL PLANNING AND DID
MUCH TO ADVANCE THE PROFESSION
OF A NURSE IN THE SOCIETY.
SHE FOUNDED MODERN NURSING
BASED ON KNOWLEDGE, ETHICS AND
RESPECT. IN 1907 SHE WAS AWARDED
THE ORDER OF MERIT, THE HIGHEST
CIVIL HONOUR AND FOR THE FIRST
TIME IT WAS GIVEN TO A WOMAN.
THREE YEARS LATER, AN OLD AND
VERY TIRED, FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE
DIED PEACEFULLY IN HER SLEEP AT
THE AGE OF NINETY.
IN 1912 THE INTERNATIONAL RED
CROSS ORGANIZATION INTRODUCED
THE
FLORENCE
NIGHTINGALE’S
MEDAL, THE HIGHEST HONOURABLE
REWARD FOR NURSES.
CONCLUSION
I BELIEVE THAT FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE WAS THE GREATEST
WOMAN IN THE HISTORY OF ENGLAND. SHE SAVED MILLIONS OF
PEOPLE.
HER METHOD
OF NURSING HAS BECOME A MODEL FOR
MODERN NURSES.
WHEN I HAD DECIDED TO BECOME A NURSE I KNEW NOTHING
ABOUT FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE . AND NOW I AM SURE I HAVE
CHOSEN THE RIGHT PROFESSION.
