Modern English society
with the contemporary
poet's eyes
Benjamin Zephaniah's
biography
Benjamin Zephaniah is a famous representative
of modern English literature. Zephaniah was born
in 1958 in Great Britain. He raised in Birmingham,
England.
A British Rastafarian writer, dub poet, children’s
poet, novelist, reggae-singer, and Nelson
Mandela’s friend.
Benjamin Zephaniah's
biography
He was included in the Times’ list of Top-50
Greatest Post-War Britain Writers in 2008.
He has sixteen honorary doctoral degrees, and
there is Eailing Hospital in west London, named in
his honor, in recognition of his work.
Dub poetry
Dub poetry is a style of poetry recitation,
comprising singsong words upon Reggie rhythms.
But usually dub poets declaim their poems
without music, singsonging them rhythmically
and gesticulating, sometimes with randomly
inserted Dub effects like echo. The most themes
in Dub poetry are social and political.
Linton Kwesi Johnson – a UK-based dub poet.
Racism and nationalism in modern Britain
In modern Britain the theme of racism and nationalism is quite relevant. We
can see ethnic conflicts and hear racial cuts everywhere everyday: in the street,
in a café, in a school, in a public transport.
Racism and nationalism in modern Britain
Anti-racism protest meetings and pickets, holding out for equal rights for
ethnic groups, exhorting them to fight for good jobs, homes, and services, in the
streets of modern Britain is not rarity today.
The anti-racism theme
in Zephaniah's works
Many of contemporary English poets are the
ardent supporters of Anti-racism protest
movements. Zephaniah is not an exception.
He writes his poetry originates in the Jamaica
rhythms and “street politics”.
The anti-racism theme
in Zephaniah's works
His mission is to take poetry everywhere, to
popularize poetry by people who do not read
books.
This poetry is political, musical, radical, relevant,
and on TV.
Zephaniah describes the life of black-skinned
people in modern Britain with humor and deep
understanding.
The anti-racism theme
in Zephaniah's works
Like a Rastafarian, most of his poems he has
devoted to the race differences.
Here is, for example, his poem “THE
BRITISH”.
The anti-racism theme
in Zephaniah's works
From our point of view, in this poem the author
describes not just the British history, recounts the
ethnic groups of the British population, but gives
the government simple advice on how to rule such
a multinational state efficiently.
The anti-racism theme
in Zephaniah's works
By our eyesight, in the title of this poem the
author underlines that all this national multitude
is a real great Britain, and all of these people are
British, too.
Thus, modern English literature reflects the
problems of contemporary British society.
The anti-racism theme
in Zephaniah's works
Zephaniah works a lot with human rights
groups, animal rights groups, and other political
organizations. In our opinion, he will never lack
subject matter.
Postscript
Postscript
To our mind, Zephaniah and nine teenagers, varied
in national origins, from different Peterborough
colleges bring the poem about ethnic diversity in
Britain to life symbolically around a dinner table,
sharing a pizza (bread) with each other, challenging
one-shot piece!
Zephaniah does a huge work to fight against
racism.
