Faculties General information The University of Cambridge is one of the world's oldest universities and leading academic centres and a self-governed community of scholars. It is the second large educational and scientific center of Great Britain. It trains experts in humanitarian, natural and technical science. Theoretical research work It conducts basic theoretical research in the field of chemistry and biology, medicine, physiology and genetics, geology, mineralogy, geodesy and geophysics, mechanical engineering, theoretical physics, mechanics, thermodynamics and gas dynamics, electrical equipment and electronics, metallurgy. History in brief It was founded in the 13th century by group of the English scientists on a sample of the Parisian university. Within the next three centuries the majority of nowadays existing colleges has been created. By the 16th century the Cambridge University has got reputation of one of the best educational institutions in Europe. University structure Cambridge University represents special type of the higher educational institution consisting of 31colleges. They are the self-coping corporate organizations. They accept students, organize their training, provide their housing. Each college has the charter and structure of professors and teachers in a wide range of subjects and separate branches of science. Attractions The University of Cambridge is rich in history. Its famous Colleges and University buildings attract visitors from all over the world. The university has no own territory, colleges and other university buildings are concentrated in the center and the western part of the city. Colleges Now 31 colleges (from which only 3 are female, the others 28 – mixed) are a part of the Cambridge University. The college of Magdalena was the last men's college and has begun to accept women only in 1988. In Cambridge there are also several theological colleges. Faculties The following faculties function at the university: classic literature, divinity, English, fine arts, modern and classic languages, music, oriental studies, political economy, historical, legal, ethics and esthetics, technical science, geography and geology, mathematics, physics and chemistry, agriculture, archeology and anthropology, botany and zoology, anatomy, biochemistry, pathology and medicine. Laboratories There are also 26 research laboratories: agricultural, anatomy, biochemistry, biology and parasitology, botany, chemistry, chemical mechanical engineering, colloidal chemistry, ethnology, number of laboratories of technical science of Cavendish, mineralogy and petrology, pathology, physical chemistry, physiology, psychology, statistics, veterinary science and zoology, etc. Libraries Besides the university library (with the richest collection of manuscripts) having the right of receiving a copy of all books printed in England, each college has its own library. Museums and other organizations 6 museums, an observatory, a botanical garden work in Cambridge. Scott Polar Research Institute, Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Institute of Theoretical Astronomy and some other organizations function at the university. The University's museums and collections also hold many treasures which give an exciting insight into some of the scholarly activities, both past and present, of the University's academics and students. Reputation Its reputation for outstanding academic achievement is known world-wide and reflects the intellectual achievement of its students, as well as the world-class original research carried out by the staff of the University and the Colleges. Personal opinion Actually, I would like to make a live excursion on Cambridge University to see its architectural sights, and enjoy the unique atmosphere of prestigious educational institution with old traditions.
