History of Hollywood
A Dream Factory
Hollywood is a Dream Factory which had the greatest impact
on the culture of mankind in the last hundred years. It is
the most glamorous place where actors are always under the
spotlight and glare of lights and it is full of artificial
life. You are welcome to join us to have a virtual tour to
Hollywood with just a few clicks!
History of Hollywood
In 1886 a real estate tycoon
Harvey Henderson Wilcox and his
wife Daeida bought 160 acres of
land west of the city and built
there a ranch «Hollywood».
History of Hollywood
In the early 1900s, filmmakers began moving
to the Los Angeles to make their films.
California had three things to become the
right place to shoot motion pictures: the
dry weather, the natural sunlight and the
wide variety of scenery. At first, pictures
were silent, with background music played
on site by small orchestras.

20th Century Fox (1933)
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
and
Warner
Bros
(1912)
Universal (1912)
The studio made the movie, signed the
actors, writers and directors to a contract
to appear exclusively in the pictures of
their studios and distributed the film to
theaters around the country.

Charlie
Chaplin
Studios
is
a
motion
picture studio built in 1917 by silent and
sound film star Charlie Chaplin.
The timeless symbol of the film
industry is the famous "Hollywood"
sign. It was installed originally
to advertise a new subdivision
near the top of Mount Lee, called
"Hollywoodland“.
The
height
of
each letter was 9 m, width – 15 m.
In 1949 the word LAND was removed.
In September 1932, a British 24-year-old
actress Peg Entwistle had been cut from
David O. Selznick’s film Thirteen Women.
Such event meant almost complete poverty
for the actress, so she committed suicide
by jumping from the letter «H» in the
famous Hollywood sign.

Golden Age of Hollywood lasted from the end

The first Academy Merit Awards were given on May
16, 1929 to Wings, for what was originally called

in
Hollywood at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
In 2016 Leonardo DiCaprio got his
first Oscar as the Best Actor in
the film Spotlight.
Hollywood attractions
The world-known "Hollywood Walk of Fame,"
where the names of celebrities are embedded
in the sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard,
was built in 1956. There are 2,488 fivepointed stars given for being significant
contributors to the entertainment industry.
The famous Disney’s Hollywood Studio gives
you a chance to admire the glitz and
glamour of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Famous Dolby Theatre, also known as Kodak
Theatre, was opened on November 9, 2001 in
Los Angeles. It’s a place for Oscar
ceremonies. The auditorium can accommodate
nearly 3,4000people.
California dentist Charles Pincus is an
author
of
“Hollywood
smile”.
In
the
thirties of the last century, he invented
veneer – a thin layer of material placed
over a tooth, to improve the aesthetics of
a tooth and to protect the tooth’s surface
from damage. His invention became so
popular among the actors that Pincus was
nicknamed “Star dentist”.
Hollywood is the home of many historic and
unusual
points
of
interests.

Believe
It
or
Not!
Odditorium
is
a
collection of unusual things.
Since 1992
the museum has carried on Robert Ripley’s
tradition of scouring the globe for the
world’s most unbelievable exhibits.
