William Shakespeare
Poet and playwright, often
regarded as the greatest Englishlanguage writer and one of the
best playwrights in the world.
Often referred to as the national
poet of England.
Born in England. The date of his
birth is still unknown.
Extant works, including some written in collaboration with other
authors, consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, 4 poems and 3 epitaphs.
Shakespeare's plays have been translated into all major languages and
staged more frequently than the works of other playwrights.
Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon.
At 18, he married Anne Hathaway, he had three children:
daughter Susanna and twins Judith and Hemnet.
Shakespeare began his career
in 1592. Soon he became a
successful actor, playwright
and theater co-owner of the
company
called
"Lord
Chamberlain", later known as
"Servants of the King." In
1613, at the of age 48, he
returned to Stratford, where
he died three years later.

There is little historical evidence
about the life of Shakespeare, and
theories about his life are based on
official documents and testimonies
of the contemporaries, so the
scientific community still have

Most of the works of Shakespeare
were written in the period from
1589 to 1613. His early plays are
mainly related to comedies and
chronicles, in which Shakespeare
had success. Then came the period
of tragedies in his work, including
the works "Hamlet," "King Lear",
"Othello" and "Macbeth", which
are considered some of the best in
English.

not to be, that is the question."

His work greatly influenced the
later poets. The poets of the
Romantic period were trying to
revive Shakespearean verse
drama, but did not have much
success. Critic George Steiner
described all English drama from
Coleridge to Tennyson «weak
variations on Shakespearean
themes».

In
Shakespeare's
day,
English
grammar,
spelling
and
pronunciation were less standardized than they are now, and his
use of language helped shape modern English. Samuel Johnson
quoted him more often than any other author in his A
Dictionary of the English Language, the first serious work of its
type.

Around 230 years after Shakespeare's death, doubts began to
be expressed about the authorship of the works attributed to
him. Proposed alternative candidates include Francis
Bacon, Christopher Marlowe, and Edward de Vere. Only a
small minority of academics believe there is reason to question
the traditional attribute, but interest in the subject, particularly
the Oxfordian theory of Shakespeare authorship, continues
into the 21st century.
This presentation is a brief overview of life and work of
the greatest poet and playwright of all time.
This is an interesting and exciting material for all those
who appreciate and love English literature and poetry.
Also it can be useful for those who study the English
language.
