Every country and every nation
has it's own traditions and
customs.
Englishman are proud of their
traditions and carefully keep
them up.
British nation is considered to be
the most conservative in Europe.
The well-known tradition is their
queen, money system, their weights
and measures.
There are many customs and
some of them are very old.
For example, there is the Marble
Championship.
The Champion is crowned and
wins a silver cup.
The very old tradition is
the folk dance called
Morris Dancing. This is a
traditional dance of bright
dressed people with the
handkerchiefs or big sticks
in their hands. They dance
to traditional folk music.
Another tradition is the Boat Race,
which takes place on the river
Thames, often on Easter Sunday.
A boat with a team from Oxford
University and one with a team
from Cambridge University hold
a race.
British people think that the Grand
National horse race is the most exciting
horse race in the world. It takes place
near Liverpool every year.
Sometimes it takes place on the
same day as the Boat Race does.
Amateur riders as well as
professional jockeys can
participate in it.
.
A popular Scottish event is the
Edinburgh Festival of music and
drama, which takes place every
year.
In Wales there is a national festival of
traditional poetry and music- the
Eisteddfod. A competition for the best
new poem in Welsh is held here.
Halloween is a day on which many
children dress up in unusual costumes.
This holiday is of
Celtic origin. The
holiday is celebrated
on October 31. The
Celts celebrated the
coming of New Year on
that day.
Another tradition is
the holiday called
Bonfire Night.
It’s celebrated On
November
. On this day you can see people
with figures, made of sacks and
straw and dressed in old clothes.
They put their figures on the
bonfire, burn them, and light
their fireworks.
Christmas Day is celebrated on
the 25th of December.
One of the Christmas traditions is
to give presents to each other.
Another tradition is to send
Christmas cards.
Many families celebrate Christmas day in
the open air near the Christmas tree .
Children find Christmas presents in their
stockings.
The English usually eat turkey and
pudding for Christmas dinner .
New Year is not so popular in
Britain as Christmas.
But in London many people
go to Trafalgar Square on
New Year's Eve. They sing
and dance at 12 o'clock on
December 31st.
