Englishman are proud of their traditions and carefully keep them up. British nation is considered to be the most conservative in Europe. The well-known tradition is their queen, money system, their weights and measures. There are many customs and some of them are very old. For example, there is the Marble Championship. The Champion is crowned and wins a silver cup. The very old tradition is the folk dance called Morris Dancing. This is a traditional dance of bright dressed people with the handkerchiefs or big sticks in their hands. They dance to traditional folk music. Another tradition is the Boat Race, which takes place on the river Thames, often on Easter Sunday. A boat with a team from Oxford University and one with a team from Cambridge University hold a race. British people think that the Grand National horse race is the most exciting horse race in the world. It takes place near Liverpool every year. Sometimes it takes place on the same day as the Boat Race does. Amateur riders as well as professional jockeys can participate in it. . A popular Scottish event is the Edinburgh Festival of music and drama, which takes place every year. In Wales there is a national festival of traditional poetry and music- the Eisteddfod. A competition for the best new poem in Welsh is held here. Halloween is a day on which many children dress up in unusual costumes. This holiday is of Celtic origin. The holiday is celebrated on October 31. The Celts celebrated the coming of New Year on that day. Another tradition is the holiday called Bonfire Night. It’s celebrated On November . On this day you can see people with figures, made of sacks and straw and dressed in old clothes. They put their figures on the bonfire, burn them, and light their fireworks. Christmas Day is celebrated on the 25th of December. One of the Christmas traditions is to give presents to each other. Another tradition is to send Christmas cards. Many families celebrate Christmas day in the open air near the Christmas tree . Children find Christmas presents in their stockings. The English usually eat turkey and pudding for Christmas dinner . New Year is not so popular in Britain as Christmas. But in London many people go to Trafalgar Square on New Year's Eve. They sing and dance at 12 o'clock on December 31st.
