Horror films are aimed to
frighten us, to reveal our
internal fears.
This genre opens out the
original nature of a man: dread
and fear.
Places and characters
of horrors
Horror films are shot at the
old castles, foggy cemeteries
or abandoned houses, dark
catacombs and halls.
Their characters are
supernatural monsters,
beasts, vampires, ghosts,
demons, zombies,
werewolves, maniacs.
Start of American horror history
The sources of plots were
European countries
because the Americans
had not very rich cultural
baggage.
We may consider the year
1910 a start of horror films
in the US.
Till 1930-s the American
cinema could successfully
compete with Germany
and France but then
there was the Great
depression and the
Second World War.
The era of studios
In 1930-s horror took maybe not the
largest but a significant part in cinemamainly due to large studios.
Universal Studios presented to the
world the line of classic cinema
evildoers – from the earl Dracula to
the Creature from the Black
Lagoon.
In 1930-s Universal
Pictures was the
biggest studio working
out the horrors.
Regress and progress
In 1950s the classical
monsters of the
Universal faced
regress until the
British specialist
began their
reanimation- but it is
another story.
The next period in
development of
American horrors
began after the Second
World War— since
1960-s, when the
world saw the film of
Alfred Hitchcock
«Psycho»
The third period started in
1975, when Steven Spielberg
released the film «Jaws»— the
first horror-blockbuster of
modern cinema. After it horrors
are paid much attention not only
by the small independent firms
but also the big ones.
Just to 1990-s this wave started
its regress for a short period: the
release of «Scream» returned
the horrors in mainstream. After
it the fourth period started. It
was marked by plays in
postmodernism and remaking.
The release of «Saw» in 2004 told us that
horror film can be with torn off limbs and
without cameras turned aside in the most
thrilling moments. So we may say that
American horror is all right- it is alive and
healthy.
