The UK is made up of four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. There are a lot of rivers in GB, but they are not very long. The Severn is the longest river, while the Thames is the deepest and the most important one. Great Britain is a highly industrialized country. The main industrial centers are London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow and Bristol. Liverpool Liverpool, the "city of ships", is England's second greatest port, ranking after London. The most interesting sight in the Liverpool is the docks. They occupy a river frontage of seven miles. The University of Liverpool, established in 1903, is noted for its School of Tropical Medicine. And in the music world Liverpool is a wellknown name, for it's the home town of "The Beatles". Edinburgh Edinburgh is Scotland's capital. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Britain. The heart of Edinburgh is the thousand-year-old castle, where the kings of Scotland lived for centuries. Edinburgh has a busy cultural life. Every year, in August, the International Festival takes place there. Musicians, actors and singers come from all over the world and thousands of visitors fill the city. Glasgow Glasgow is a great Scottish city of about one million people, famous for its shipyards, which line the banks of the Clyde river. Glasgow is the heart of industry. It is a centre of business and trade. It is very busy, prosperous, dirty in some parts and smart in others. Manchester Manchester is an industrial capital of the North of England. It is a very old city. It is the centre of cotton industry. Manchester was the first city in Great Britain to build an airport in 1929. Manchester has many libraries, museums, art gallery. In the early 19th century Manchester became world famous as a manufacturing centre. Wool, silk and cotton were manufactured and vast numbers of working people worked 12 hour days in the mills. There was also a paper making industry and iron foundries. Cambridge Cambridge is one of the best known towns in the world and it can be found on most tourists' lists of places to visit. Cambridge is famous for its university, which started during the 13th century and grew steadily, until today there are more than twenty colleges. The oldest one is Peterhouse, which was founded in 1284.. Oxford This university town is very beautiful. The oldest university there is Oxford. The first of its colleges was founded in 1249. The university now has thirtyfive colleges and about thirteen thousand students, many of them from other countries. There were no women at Oxford until 1878. Now most colleges are open to men and women. It is not easy to get a place at Oxford University to study for a degree. Conclusion England is very rich country. To my mind England is a very beautiful and attractive country for tourists and not only. I advise to visit it, because it`s a real chance to make the acquaintance of somebody or culture and traditions and improve the English language. Good luck!
