A great English writer.
Biography.
Playwriting.
The works of Shakespeare are a part of English
history.
William Shakespeare is the
greatest and most famous of
English writers. His plays are
performed today and he is
quoted in modern literature
very often. There are comedies,
stories, tragedies. His plays are
the most known in English
literature, they are studied in
many schools and universities
all over the world.
Thanks to the
playwright the English
language is full of
phrases and
Shakespeare's words are
very popular.
Shakespeare's life is known little, he shared the fate of the
vast majority of other English playwrights,
contemporaries were not interested in their personal life .
.
He was born in Stratford-on-Avon.
It was a small English town.
His father wanted his son to be an educated person and
William was sent to the local grammar school.
When William was 18 he married Anne
Hathaway. They had three children, the
first was Susanna and then the twins, the
son,Hamnet by name and the daughter was
Judith.
Hamnet died when he was 11.
When Shakespeare was twenty-one, he
went to London. We didn't know why
he had left Stratford-on-Avon. There
was a story that Shakespeare's first job
in London was holding rich men's
horses at the theatre door. But nobody
can be sure that this story was true.
Later, Shakespeare became an
actor and a member of a very
successful acting company.
In 1594 Shakespeare joined
the best acting company
of the country—Lord
Chamberlain's Men.
There were the best actors, the best writers and the most famous
theatre,the Globe.
The Globe was a huge
amphitheatre without a roof.
The
. seats were curved around
a stage that was built on
many levels.
Shakespeare and his fellow actors were
responsible for everything in the Globe
theatre. They owned the building and
the costumes, they wrote the scripts
and they also shared the profits that
they made. The actors and writers
of the theatre worked together
successfully for many years.
Shakespeare spent the last .years of his life at Stratford,
where he died, ironically, on the same date as his birthday,
the 23d of April, 1616. He was buried in the church of
Stratford. A monument was erected to the memory of the great
playwright in the Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey.
During twenty years that he was
working on stage Shakespeare
wrote 37 plays, 4 poems and a
cycle of 154 sonnets. They can be
put into three big categories:
-Tragedies are plays that
show the downfall of a
main character. His most
famous tragedies are
Hamlet, King Lear and
Macbeth.
- Comedies are funny
plays that have a
happy ending most of
the time.
A Midsummer Night's Dream,
As You Like It and The
Merry Wives of Windsor are
among the most popular.
-Historical plays are dramas about the lives of some
of England's most powerful kings like
Henry IV or Richard II.
In 150 years after William Shakespeare died, some writers had
doubts of his authorship of plays and poems. They said that these
works were created by another person. There were reasons for these
facts. For example, the author of plays knew a lot of other countries,
William Shakespeare never left England. Most scholars still believe
that Shakespeare wrote these works, but the idea that somebody else
wrote the books is still discussed.
The works of Shakespeare
have been translated into
many languages. His plays are
still popular and millions of
people admire them. Maybe
there is no one reason why
Shakespeare remains popular
in the world. Someone says it's
because of the beautiful
language that he used. Others
say that it is
an important part
of English history.
Today his works are part of English traditions. Perhaps it's
because Shakespeare understood the lives of people. He
wrote about situations which happen to all people at all
times. He wrote about families, conflicts and love.
It has been over 450 years since
he was born. However, when
people see his plays, it seems that
the world has not changed.
There are parts in his works,
which readers always
understand. And they don't
need any translation.
What a great soul had to have to melt the own hopes and
sufferings in the passion of his immortal characters —
Romeo, Juliet, Othello, Macbeth, Lear!..
How much he had to experience and feel,
to write wise lines of sonnets!
"
Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have
greatness thrust upon them"
"It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves“
William Shakespeare
