THE BLOODY PAGES FROM THE HISTORY OF
ALEXANDROVA SLOBODA
The history of Alexandrova Sloboda is full of unusual, striking,
interesting events that can be found in the ancient chronics of our country. It’ s
not a secret , in the history of every state there are some bloody pages which
can shock , cause disgust but can’t be forgotten . Here is one of them
connected with the reign of Ivan the Terrible in the 16-th century.
The country was in the grip of disquiet ,the internal and external situation
was tense so in December 1564 the Tsar together with his family and the most
trusted people left Moscow for Alexandrova Sloboda , trying to escape serious
conflicts with the boyars . He took the state treasury, valuables and icons from
Moscow churches and four thousand sledges carried all the Tsar’s personal
belongings to the destination .From the moment when Ivan IV established the
“oprichnina” ( the name comes from the old Russian word ‘ oprich’ - ‘apart’),
territories which were ruled directly by Tsar Ivan, with its centre in
Alexandrova
Sloboda , its bloody pages started to appear.
There Ivan the Terrible organized so-called the ‘ monkish brotherhood ’
the members of which had to carry out the duties : go to church, pray and sing
religious songs. But they were not real monks, they were ‘oprichniki’-the special
selected corps( about 6000) who were similar to a court order of knights. They
looked like priests: they wore black clothes, black hats and rode black horses, but
behaved like real bandits. They also had a sign on their waist- a dog’s head and a
broom - symbols for hunting down treason and sweeping it out. Oprichniki
possessed full and unlimited power: they could rob, burn houses, arrest, torture and
kill people. Their purpose was to look for enemies or betrayers and destroy them,
defending the Tsar.
The atmosphere in the country was awful: violence and terror was everywhere.
People were scared of total control because they weren’t protected from oprichniki’s
cruelty. A lot of people, the whole families which were not guilty died in that time,
meanwhile their property and lands were appropriated by the Tsar’s men.

book, Danish Envoy Jacob
Ulfeldt’s Journey to
Muscovy in 1575
The rumour of Alexandrova Sloboda as the residence of Grozny where,
on the one hand, he hosted foreign ambassadors and had great feasts and, on the
other hand, a horrible place where prisoners were tortured and sadistic executed ,
spread all over the country and abroad. Prince Andrei Kurbsky described Sloboda as
a town “full of Christian blood”. The ill fame of the “bloody pit”of the capital of
Russia remained for seven years (1565 -1572) until Ivan the Terrible abolished
the oprichnina.
