The first horror films appeared 10 years after the emergence
of cinema. According to the photography’s technology the
actors had to smear their faces with white make up and draw
black eyes and lips. Leaders in creating horror films were the
Germans.
Then the USA picked up the
baton and the Film company
Universal created a series of
classic horror films. The star of
silent horror films in Hollywood
was LON Chaney. His main
feature was the use of a large
number of makeup, changing it
beyond recognition.
The most interesting images of this actor were the Womb of
the phantom of the Opera, the Hunchback of Notre and the
Vampire from London after midnight.
With the advent of sound, most silent film actors had to relearn,
but the original plastic movements were preserved. Instead of
Cheney came just a few horror actors:
Boris Karlov
Bella Lugosi
LON Chaney Jr.
THE MOST INTERESTING FILMS OF THIS PERIOD ARE:
Dracula
Frankenstein
the Wolfman
the Invisible Man
Hammer Film Productions
In November 1934 William Hinds, a comedian and businessman,
registered his film company, Hammer Productions Ltd. It was a
British film production company based in London. The
company’s name came from Hinds' stage name, Will Hammer.
"Golden Age" of British horror film is limited almost the same
dates as the flowering of horror in Southern Europe: 1957 1976 years.

have been showing up.
VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED (1960)

small object protruding from a

undermined by the edge of the
cliff.
TO THE DEVIL A DAUGHTER (1976)
The priest plans to use the
young girl as the representative
of the Devil on Earth. An
American occult novelist tries
to save the soul of a young girl
from a group of Satanists.
“To the Devil a Daughter” is
the last film of Hammer
Studios, and is definitely one
of the most ‘adult’ films of the
studio.
LATTER YEARS OF FILM PRODUCTIONS
In the latter years, Hammer made fewer films, and attempts
were made to break from the unfashionable Gothic horror
films on which the studio had built its reputation. Neither
“The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampiers” nor “To the Devil a
Daughter” could save the situation.
Hammer's last production, in 1979 was a remake of
Hitchcock's 1938 thriller “The Lady Vanishes”. The film
failed at the box office and almost bankrupted the studio.
In 1975 the Studio declared bankruptcy and stopped
working, but in the 2000s, Hammer Film Productions
returned in a big movie. Since 2007 it is a subsidiary
company of the holding company Exclusive media.
My opinion
They say horror films are not very popular among
people, but I think they are always interesting. The plot is
usually fascinating and it keeps the numerous spectators
in suspense. I think this is a good way to spend our free
time and we can enjoy it surviving along with the
characters, empathising with them and enjoying a good
finale with the heroes of the film.
