общения на английском языке (Business English for Specific Purposes).

Sole proprietorship
In a sole proprietorship the individual entrepreneur owns the business. The sole
trader is an individual who runs an unregistered (unincorporated) business. In the
state of New York all that seems to be necessary is to go to a county clerk’s office,
pay a small fee, and register the business as a DBA. A DBA means «Doing business
as...,» which permits you to operate a business under a name different than your own.
So there’s no need to consult the lawyer. It is possible to start business with a small
5
amount of money. A sole proprietor decides upon his working hours, wages, hiring
and firing.
This is simple fast and inexpensive. The main drawback is that all assets owned
by the entrepreneur may be at risk if the business runs into trouble. This could include one's house, car, savings account.
Examples. 1) Coman is a sole trader who offers public relations advice to organizations as ‘COMAN’.
A sole trader is an individual who runs an unregistered (unincorporated) business. He is a sole proprietor.
2) Design House.
This is a franchised business offering consultancy to retail outlets.
A franchise is a license allowing a distributor, trader or manufacturer to sell or
manufacture a particular product or service.
Sole proprietorship do not do the greatest volume of business. They account for
16 % of all business receipts. This form of business is likely to be in service industries such as launderettes, beauty shops, repair shops, restaurants.

8
to define the relationship and to discuss and put in writing how the partnership will be
dissolved, considering as many different circumstances as you can think of. There are
partnerships in professional fields: medicine, law, stock brokerage, accounting. When
the owners of the firm have unlimited liability they are called general partners. If the
partners have limited liability they are ‘limited partners’. Limited partnership is a special
form in which a general partner has liability but limited partners do not. Limited partnerships are common forms in real estate, oil prospecting. There may be a silent partner – a
person who is known to the public as a member of the firm but without authority in
management. The reverse of the silent partner is a secret partner – a person who is not
known to the public, but takes put in management.
Partnership has more advantages than sole proprietorship if one needs a big
capital or diversified management. They are easy to form and often get tax benefits
from the government.

Text 1
Corporation
This is a business form, sometimes call a C-Corporation, that is usually chartered by and subject to the laws of the state, in which it is incorporated. Business corporations are the most common form of corporation established for the purpose of
making profit. In the United States they make up only about 15 cent of all business
enterprises but they may account for more than 75 per cent of all business assets. A
business corporation is operated by individuals whose shares of ownership are represented by stock certificates. People owning stock certificates are called stockholders
or shareholders.
A corporation is owned by shareholders, whose liability is limited to the assets
of the corporation. The stockholders have limited liability. If the corporation fails
they can lose only their investments, but not the personal assets.
Business corporations may be public or private. The public corporations (PLC)
obtain funds by selling ownership shares, called capital stock, to large numbers of investors. A PLC has at least two members but since it offers its shares for sale to the
public it may have hundreds of thousands of shareholders, who have one vote for
each share they own. A person who succeeds in buying 51 per cent of the shares can
gain control of a PLC. Shareholders can sell their shares to the people who wish to
buy on the Stock Exchange. The price of shares will go up if the PLC is making good
profits and will go down if it is not doing so well.
Private limited companies (LTD) have a limited number of owners usually not
more than fifty members, who provide the capital which is divided into shares. Shares
cannot be offered for sale to the public. Some private corporations are large firms but
most are small companies. Some of the advantages of the corporation, in addition to
limited liability, are that it attracts financial resources,(its shares can be traded with
various restrictions), — it also attracts a large amount of capital – it can invest it in its
equipment and research. And the third advantage is that it can offer higher salaries
and attract talented managers and specialists.
17
The downside of incorporating is that there are significant overhead costs. In
some western countries, cities, states, federal government and special agencies can
establish governmental corporations.
Ex: State universities, state hospitals and city owned utilities.
Governmental corporations are non- profit as a rule. Usually this type of corporations does not issue stock and is non-profit, if there is a profit, it is reinvested in the
institution rather than distributed to private stockholders. Non-profit corporations
provide community services. They consist of members instead of stockholders and
provide no dividends.
Sub-Chapter S- corporation is similar to a conventional corporation except that
profit and loss flow through to the shareholders each year in proportion to their ownership for tax purposes.

A legal procedure
If you want to form a corporation you should apply for a Corporate Charter.
The stockholders hold a meeting to organize the corporation. They elect the Board of
Directors. The stockholders have the final authority in management and the company`s officers supervise daily management. Stockholders vote at the annual meeting.
There are two varieties of stock, preferred and common. The common stock
gives stockholders voting rights. Preferred stock does not extend voting to stockholders but gives holders the first claim on the company`s assets after the debts are paid.
Corporations give stockholders their parts of the profits. These payments are called
dividends.
Sub-Chapter S-corporation is similar to a conventional corporation except that
profit and loss flow through to the shareholders each year in proportion to their ownership for tax purposes.

Deutsche Information System (DIS AG).
Public Corporation).

John Winton is chairman of Eagle plc, an engineering firm based in Birmingham, England. Eagle makes products for the car and aircraft industries, as well as
military equipment for foreign governments. At present, it is negotiating with a Middle East country to supply components for a new weapons system. If it wins the contract, the company will have full order books for the next five years.
22
The American- based IIC group intends to take over Eagle. IIC has huge cash
reserves, which it uses to snap up smaller companies. In recent years, it has acquired
a number of firms in different areas of business. ‘We have a finger in every pie’,
Frank Smith told Winton at their meeting.
The voting shares of Eagle are distributed among shareholders as follows:
Shareholder Shareholding Notes
IIC 10 %. The holding was acquired by IIC’s stockbrokers a month a ago at the
price of 130 pence
Investment agency 8 %. The agency acts for a South American
A government two insurance companies 7 %
Eagle’s directors 2 %
Other shareholders 73 %. These are all small private shareholders.
Eagle would be a good acquisition for IIC. Its present share price – 140 pence –
is low and does not reflect the true value of the company. Eagle’s profit record during
the last three years has been poor. Lost contracts, heavy expenditure on research to
develop new products, and rising operating costs have been the cause of this.
IIC are not only attracted by the low share price. They also know that Eagle has
valuable assets: an impressive office block in the center of Birmingham; three modern factories; a large piece of land outside Birmingham, suitable for building on. All
these assets were entered into the accounts years ago, and have not been revalued.
Winton’s meeting with Smith had been friendly until he had mentioned that
Eagle’s board would probably advise shareholders to hold on to their shares.
If you do that, we shall increase our offer to 220 pence a share. They’ll certainly sell at that price,’ Smith had said. ‘Possibly’, Winton had replied.

When is the Right Time to Start a Business?
When RF Communications was about three years old I spoke to a local business group describing our early experiences. By then we had reached over $1 million
in sales and had achieved a good level of profits. The start-up days were behind us. It
seemed almost certain that we would survive and, in all likelihood, continue to do
well.
At the end of the presentation someone in the audience raised his hand. His
comment was, ‘Boy, you guys were really lucky, you started your business at just the
right time.’ I had never thought about the question before and had to stop a few
moments before answering. My response was, ‘Boy, when we started our business it
sure did not feel like the right time.’
Three of the founders had quit their jobs, we had not raised any outside capital,
we had invested all of our meager savings and personal borrowings in the company,
we were operating out of a vacant beauty parlor, we had only a half-finished product
and we had no orders.
Were we really lucky? Did we really start the business at the right time? Who
knows?
In retrospect I now believe it is either always the right time to start a business
or never the right time. If you need an acceptable reason to put the decision off forever, ‘It’s a bad time.’ is as good a reason as any.
The company that I always considered as a role model early in my professional
career was Hewlett-Packard. That company was started in a garage by two Stanford
University graduate students in 1939 in the middle of the Great Depression. If there
was ever a wrong time in the history of the world to start a company I would say that
David Packard and William Hewlett did very well in finding it.
I do not suggest for a minute that you should rush out and quit your job before
you are ready. Carefully evaluate the market opportunity, get as far along as you can
in developing your product or service, prepare a good business plan, arrange for the
capital you think you need and then get on with it.
If all the pieces do not fit, perhaps it may be prudent to go back over the planning process. Perhaps you should delay if you decide it is necessary to reevaluate
your fundamental strategy so as to match changes in the economic conditions or the
availability of capital. Consider as best you can the circumstances and difficulties you
are likely to face.
Remember most of all, though, that it is always difficult to start a company. It
is never easy. The issue is not whether it is the right time or the wrong time. The issue is that you must adjust your strategy and your plan for the business so that they
match the times. And, when you look at others who built successful businesses, do
not think that those entrepreneurs were fortunate enough to have found an easy road.
24
In all probability they were just as scared and just as apprehensive as you, regardless
of the times.

Mr. Brown: O. K. You are sure to get acquainted with our draft of the contract
for buying your equipment. We'd like to know whether you agree with all the clauses
of the contract. As soon as we make the final version of the contract we can sign it
and come to practical implementation.
Mr. Nichols I fully agree with you, Mr. Brown. I and mу experts have thoroughly studied the clauses of the contract. Mr. Swift, our sales manager, will speak
about our proposals as to some alterations. Swift: Thank you. Gentlemen, having analyzed the proposed draft contract and taking into account our methods of work, I'd
like to stress the following:
First, the price per unit of equipment also includes the price of all parts providing the efficient functioning of the equipment, as it is pointed out in the appendix to
the contract. So the unit price will be $6,579 instead of $6, 350 which changes the total contract price respectively.

Mr. Walton, buyer's representative: I think the same, but I have a counter
offer. As you are so strict on the quality of your equipment, couldn't you prolong the

your requirement.
Mr. Walton: Thank you.
Mr. Nichols: Are there any other points in the contract you'd like to clear up?
Mr. Brown: No, I think we have settled all the points quite clearly.

Conducting the interview
The interview must be planned to elicit information from the candidate which
will enable his experience, qualifications and personal qualities to be measured
against the requirements set out in the job specification. There is no one best way of
sequencing an interview. A fairly typical approach would be:
1. Put the candidate at his ease – he will be nervous and you want him to relax
so that he will express himself freely.
2. Explain how you are going to handle the interview.
3. Start with a brief description of the job and the company. Do not spend too
long over this, especially if the candidate is a marginal one. You can elaborate at the
end of the interview.
4. Use a biographical approach, invite the candidate to describe in his own
words his education and career to date. Do not delve too deeply into the distant past –
spend most time on the current job. Probe if necessary to ensure that the candidate is
giving you the full picture. He will naturally try to gloss over any less successful episodes in his career. Get him to tell you not only what he did but why he did it. This is
particularly relevant when discussing choice of career and reasons for leaving jobs. It
will give you a chance to assess how well he is motivated.
5. Give him the opportunity to talk about his achievements and to explain any
setbacks.
6. Allow time at the end of the interview for him to ask questions.
The information-gathering part of the interview should last between 20 and
40 minutes, depending on the level of the job.
For key jobs, a second interview by a more senior person is desirable.

Evaluating the interview
The only questions you need to answer at the end of the interview are:
· Does this candidate measure up to the job?
· How does this candidate compare with other candidates?
Qualifications are relatively easy to assess unless they have been obtained from
some obscure institution. Experience should not be too difficult to evaluate once you
have taken steps to assure yourself that the candidate has really done what he claims.
47
Job titles are misleading; you must have information on the actual level of responsibility and compare this with what he will be expected to do in each of the key areas
of the job for which he is being considered. Information on specific tasks and
achievements is helpful.
His progress to date will give you some indication of how he will perform in
the future. A steady progression in line with his ambitions is obviously what you are
looking for. Anyone can fail once for reasons which are not particularly blameworthy. A pattern of failure, characterized by short stays in jobs, is highly suspect. If any
gaps in the candidate’s career emerge, find out where he was and what he was doing.
A candidate’s personal qualities are difficult to assess at an interview. You may
be able to decide quickly whether you like his manner or not, but it is much harder to
assess qualities such as drive, ability to work with other and leadership.
Interviewers are always warned about the ‘halo effect’ which means allowing a
favorable impression of, for instance, a candidate’s appearance or manner to override
judgement on other aspects of his character and ability. Equally dangerous is the ‘
horns effect’ by which too much attention is paid to one unattractive feature. A balanced view must be achieved, which means looking at all aspects of the candidate’s
career as well as the initial impression he makes, even though this may be a very important part of the job itself.
Information on personality strengths and weaknesses can be obtained by analyzing the applicant’s career and interests. Someone with high aspirations what consistently achieved what he set out do is clearly well motivated. Someone from a poor
background who has triumphed over early setback has obviously more drive than
someone who has not made the most of the opportunities given to him. The candidate’s interests may indicate the extent to which he likes mixing with people and taking up leadership positions. An indication of a person’s drive and determination can
be seen by how energetically he pursues his spare-time activities. Stamp collecting
may sound pretty pedestrian but, if the candidate reveals that by sheer application he
has become the leading authority in Britain on colonial stamps in the mid-nineteenth
century, this will tell about his ability to achieve something.
Candidates can make revealing statements about themselves if you allow them
to talk-they may indeed talk about themselves out of a job. If, for example, someone
says that he left his last three jobs because his boss didn’t appreciate him, this suggests an inability to get on with superiors or a tendency towards paranoia or both. He
has drawn attention to a pattern which could well be repeated.
Задание 15. Прочтите текст и назовите плюсы и минусы интервьюирования, с точки зрения нанимателя.
The final assessment
The evidence required to make assessment of the candidate comes from various aspects of the interview and from the letter of application or application form. It
48
needs to be looked at against the specification and summarized on an assessment
form, especially if there are a number of candidates.
Dos and don’ts of interviewing
Do / Don’t
Plan the interview / Start the interview unprepared.
Establish an easy and informal / Plunge too quickly into relationship demanding questions.
Encourage the candidate to talk / Ask leading questions.
Cover the ground as planned / Jump to conclusions on inadequate evidence.
Probe as necessary.
Analyse career and interests / Pay too much attention to isoreveal strengths,
weaknesses and lated patterns of behavior.
Maintain control over the direction and time taken by the interview.
Allow the candidate to gloss over unimportant facts / Talk too much.

The kind of job you want
The first step in a successful search for a job is to decide on the kind of job you
want and the kind you are qualified for. This means that first you should answer the
questions «What can I do well?» and «What do I really want to do?"
Begin by thinking about the work you can do. Include work you have been
trained to do, work you have actually done, and work you enjoy doing.
Next, talk to as many people as possible about your job interests and concerns.
Talk to your friends, neighbours, and your family or relatives. These contacts may
help you to get more information about different jobs; to form a «network» of people
interested in helping you; to find people who work (or who know people who work)
in the area of your interest; each discussion will give you additional practice in expressing yourself.
Now when you know the kind of job you want, the next question to answer is
«Where can I find that job?"
People use many methods of finding a job. They answer job advertisements
(want ads), or apply directly to employers. Of course, some methods are better than
others are.
«Want ads»(Объявления о вакансиях)
«Want ads» are job advertisements you can find in the classified advertising
section of newspapers, professional or trade journals.
You should read the want ads at least for two reasons:
• to learn more general information about jobs available;
• to learn specific information about a particular job that is of interest to you. '
The ad may tell you about the education and work experience required for the
job; the location of the job, the working hours, and the pay. It also tells you how to
apply for that particular job.
Some want ads say that certain qualifications are required, while other qualifications are preferred or hoped for. The employer will try to find someone who has all
of the required and preferred qualifications. However, if no one has all the qualifications that the employer requires and prefers, he may hire someone who has only some
of those qualifications. It is usually best to apply only for jobs for which you have at
least all the required qualifications. However, this is not always true.
Not all want ads are easy to read. The longer a want ad is, the more money it
costs to print. In order to save money, employers leave unnecessary words out of the
advertisement. They also use abbreviations.
50
There are many good reasons for using the want ads in your job search. The
following suggestions will help you use want ads effectively:
· Remember that want ads are only one of the methods you may use. Save
time to use other methods.
· Reading all the want ads you will learn useful general information.
· Avoid ads that make unrealistic offers.
· Analyze ads, which are of interest to you.
· Determine your qualifications for that job.
· Act quickly, effectively and stay cheerful!

The Resume
A Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV) is an objective written summary of your
personal, educational, and experience qualifications. It packages your assets in the
form of a convincing advertisement, which sells you for a specific job. A resume is a
kind of written sales presentation. An effective resume creates a favorable impression
of you while presenting your abilities and experience.
The basic requirements for a good resume are:
· brevity: one page is preferable, but not more than two pages;
· top quality paper;
· perfect spelling and grammar;
· no typographical errors;
· attractive layout.
Your personal data sheet contains most, of the information you need to prepare
a resume. Now you have to select and arrange that information in the way that best
relates your background to the work you seek. Every resume is an individualized
presentation of your qualifications for a particular job. It means that you may prepare
a few different resumes, depending on the types of jobs you are applying for. You can
choose from among four types of resumes:
· Chronological resume lists work experience or education in reverse
chronological order. It describes responsibilities and accomplishments associated
with each job or educational experiences.
· Functional resume lists functional skills and experience separately from
employment history.
· Combination (functional/chronological) resume draws on the best features of the chronological and functional resumes. It highlights an applicant's capabilities and includes a complete job history.
· Targeted resume emphasizes capabilities and accomplishments relating
to the specific job applied for. Work experience is briefly listed in a separate section.
Resumes provided for graduate school admission highlight your skills, professional
experience, accomplishments, and academic history in much the same way as «job»
resumes.
The most popular with the recruiters nowadays is the combination resume,
which includes:

Задание 9. Прочитайте информацию о сведениях, которые не следует
включать в резюме.
Knowing what to exclude from your resume is as important as knowing what
to include. Here is a list of details to exclude from your resume:
· height, weight, hair or eye colour;
· comments about your family, spouse, or children;
· your photograph (unless=you are applying for model ing or acting job);
· • travel restrictions;
· preferences for work schedule, days off, or overtime;
· salary demands or expectations.
The trend in resumes today is to omit personal data, such as birth date, marital
status, religion, nationality.
Very few people have good resumes. If English is not your native language or
if you come from another country, it can be even more difficult to know the right
things to do. Some special suggestions will help you write a perfect resume:
1. Adapt your resume to the information you have gathered about the employer and the job you want.
2. Use action verbs, they will bring your resume to life.
3. Avoid the pronoun «I». Describe your skills and capabilities by using as
many specific words as possible.
4. Highlight your accomplishments and achievements.
5. Keep it simple and clear: two pages at most.
6. Be truthful. Don't exaggerate or misrepresent yourself. Remember that
employers check the information.
7. Don't mention salary. |
8. Avoid long sentences. Use the minimum number of words and phrases but
60
avoid abbreviations.
9. Looks are important. The resume should be typed with plenty of white
space and wide margins. Place head- ings at the left side of the page, and the details
relating to them on the right side.
10. Make sure there are no errors in spelling, punctuation, or typing.
11. Don't sign or date the resume.
12. Always send an original of your resume. Don't send a photocopy.
13. Keep copies of resumes on file for future reference. Once you have a job,
update your resume on a regular basis.
Задание 10. Answer the questions.
1. What is a resume? Give all possible definitions of it.
2. What are the basic requirements for a good resume?
3. How many types of resumes do you know? What do they differ in?
4. What type of resume is the most popular with the recruiters?
5. What information is recommended to exclude from your resume?
6. Which of special suggestions that can help you write a perfect resume do
you think are the most important?
Задание 11. Прочитайте резюме (А) и подберите соответствующие отрывки из письма (B). Read the resume (A), and extracts from the covering letter (B).

Некоторые другие рекомендации по написанию резюме
How to organize your resume (C. V. = CURRICULUM VITAE)
Here is what some recommendations say:
«A resume or a C. V. (curriculum vitae) is a summary of your history and professional qualifications.
Make sure your resume (C. V.) focuses on the kind of work you can and want
to do.
If you have worked successfully in an area related to the job you are applying
for, emphasize it. It sometimes happens that the most qualified people don’t always
get the job. It goes to the person who presents himself well in person and on paper.
Here is how you should organize your resume:
1.
Your name and address go at the top. The resume usually consists of the
following sections: Personal, Education, Work, Experience, Interests and Skills, Hobbies. Also your phone number.
2.
Under Personal you say:
·
when and where you were born;
·
your marital status (whether you are married, single or divorced), your
children;
·
citizenship.
3.
Under Education you describe:
·
the school you finished and the years of study (for example 1987 – 1997);
·
University, the diplomas and degrees obtained, also mention the subject
(e. g. Voronezh State University of Architecture and Construction Engineering, Economics, or Mechanics (Structural, Fluid), or Geotechnics, or Materials, or Civil engineering, Computing for engineering, Drawing and sketching, Surveying, Road Construction, Creative Design, Humanities.
·
Any higher degrees, e. g. B. A., M. A., Ph. D.1, and the university which
granted it.
4.
Then comes Work Experience:
This can be done in a number of ways; if you are a research scientist or an academic (having to do with colleges, universities or studies), you should list selected
publications and mention in brackets their total number. You always list the job, the
years you worked, the positions you held and the addresses.
This should be presented in the reverse chronological order starting from the
last job.
63
In case you have no work experience in the field, mention your summer jobs,
extracurricular school activities, awards. Choose the activities that will enhance your
qualification for the job you want.
5. Then come Interests and Skills.
Include the foreign languages you speak, computer skills, extensive travel, particular interests or professional
membership, the clubs you belong to.
This is your chance to let your future employer get some idea of your person.
For example, if you are after a job in computer programming, and you enjoy playing chess, mention it. Chess playing requires the ability to think through a problem.
6. The last is Hobbies:
It is good to mention here a hobby that can help get the job you are after.
It should be noted that a resume (C. V.) can be structured differently and may
vary in length from one page to two or more.
Send your Resume, along with a Cover Letter and a Letter of Recommendation
or Reference to a specific person. The person should be the top person in the area
where you want to work. The Cover Letter should appeal to your reader’s own needs.
Briefly explain why you are approaching his company. Refer him to your Resume and ask for an interview.

EMPLOYMENT INTERVIEWING
(ИНТЕРВЬЮ)
71
Прочитайте рекомендации по проведению собеседования для кандидата
на вакансию:
Прочитайте текст, разбитый на части и укажите, какой из приведенных
после каждой части вариант, наиболее соответствует ее основной идее:
Interviewing is the most stressful part of the job search for many people. But it
doesn’t have to be. Interviews are an opportunity to show you are an enthusiastic
worker who would do a job well.
You can make the most of that opportunity by being prepared, presenting a
professional demeanor, and describing your qualifications well.
There are many types of interviews: screening interviews, designed to whittle
the applicant pool; longer second and third interviews, intended to help employers
make final selections; and telephone and video conferencing interviews, arranged to
capitalize on available technology.
Although these interviews often have different purposes, they all require basic
interviewing skills. Read on for advice about what to do before, during, and after a
job interview.
Подготовка. Preparation. Career counselors say a good job interview starts
well before the jobseeker and interviewer meet. Preparation can be as important as
the interview itself. Researching, practicing, and dressing appropriately are the first
steps to making the most of a job interview.
Исследование. Research. One of the best, but most frequently overlooked,
ways to demonstrate enthusiasm for a job is to research both the company and the position for which you are being interviewed. Employers say they are impressed by
well-informed job seekers.
Before arriving for an interview, you should know what the company does,
how large it is, any recent changes it has undergone, and what role you could play in
its organization. Try to learn about the company’s goals and values. With these facts,
you can show how your qualifications match the company’s needs.
The company itself is often the easiest place to start your search. Many businesses fill their websites with information tailored to jobseekers. These sites often include a history of the company and a description of its products and customers. And
many companies’ human resources departments will send recruiting information if
you request it.
Public libraries and career centers also have valuable information about employers, including companies’ annual reports to shareholders, reports kept by local
chambers of commerce, trade journals, and business indexes, such as Hoover’s Business Index and Dun and Bradstreet.
The first passage:1) opens with the advice about what to do before, during and
after the job interview;
2) advises us researching, practicing and dressing appropriately as the first
steps to making the most of a job interview;
3) tells us about ways to demonstrate enthusiasm for a job.
72
Потренируйтесь в описании себя. Practice describing yourself. Another important step in preparing for a job interview is to practice describing your professional characteristics. Think of examples from past jobs, schoolwork, and activities to
illustrate important skills. Recalling accomplishments beforehand, when you don’t
have to respond under interview pressure, will strengthen your answers during the actual event.
Every interview will be different, and there may always be surprising questions.
Nevertheless, interviewers suggest rehearsing with a career counselor or friend to gain
confidence and poise. As a starting point, try to respond aloud to the following:
· How would you describe yourself?
· What did you like most about your last job?
· What types of courses do you enjoy most?
· Why should I select you over other applicants?
· What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?
· What are your hobbies?
· Tell me more about the project you described on your resume.
· Describe a work or school-related problem and how you solved it.
· Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.
· What are your short-term goals?
· Why do you want to work in this occupation and for this company?
Each question gives you an opportunity to illustrate your favorable characteristics. When responding, focus on subjects related to the job. For example, if asked to
describe yourself, talk about your professional characteristics and background, not
your personal life.
Some questions – such as those about hobbies or interests – may seem irrelevant. Interviewers ask these types of questions to learn about your personality and
test your interpersonal skills. In addition, answering questions about your hobbies or
interests allows you to highlight some of your other strengths. Participating in a sport
might demonstrate teamwork; ability in a craft, such as needlepoint, shows an attention to detail.
Career centers and libraries have many books with additional questions and
possible answers. The goal is not to memorize responses to these questions but to become comfortable speaking about yourself, your training and experience, and your
career goals. Responding to interview questions should not sound as if you are reciting a script.
Whatever the question, be ready to accentuate the positive. The interviewer
might ask for a weakness or failure; choose one that does not affect your ability to do
the job, or describe a shortcoming you are working to overcome. For example, if interviewing for an entry-level job, cite your lack of paid experience. If there are weaknesses evident on your resume; or transcript, such as being fired from a job or receiving poor grades, rehearse an explanation before the interview in case you are asked
73
about them. Focus on what you learned from the experience, being careful never to
criticize a previous employer or coworker.
The second passage:
1) gives some advice to practice describing your professional characteristics;
2) suggests rehearsing with a friend to gain confidence and poise;
3) provides the questions, giving you an opportunity to illustrate your favorable characteristics;
4) focuses on being careful never to criticize a previous employer
or coworker.
Оденьтесь официально. Dress professionally. Securing a job is much easier
if you look the part. A useful guideline is to dress as you would for an important day
on the job, like a meeting with a supervisor or a presentation to a client.
Clothes should be clean, well fitting, and wrinkle free. Most employers expect
jobseekers to wear a traditional two-piece suit, preferably in a conservative color such
as navy blue, gray, or black.
The object is to look reliable, not trendy. Many employers say that women’s
should be knee-length or bellow. Polished, closed-toe shoes complete the professional image.
Avoid last-minute clothing disasters by trying on your suit a few days before
the interviewer. And plan for the unexpected: if you will wear a skirt, buy an extra
pair of stockings; if you have shoes that tie, get more shoelaces. Bring such extras
along with you the day of the interview.
Keep hair neat by tying it back, putting it up, or cutting it short. Avoid cologne
and perfume, large pieces of jewelry, and heavy or unnatural makeup. These distract
the interviewer from your qualifications.
The third passage tells us that:
1) securing a job is much easier if your clothes are clean, well fit and wrinkle free;
2) the object is to look reliable, not trendy;
3) hair should be neat, perfume avoided, heavy make up avoided.
Время показать себя Showtime
On the day of the interview, give yourself plenty of time to get ready for and
travel to the interview. Plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. (Some career counselors
suggest making a test run to the interview in advance to familiarize yourself with the
travel route.)
Consider carrying a briefcase to the interview. In addition to giving you a professional look, a briefcase serves a function: it gives portability to things you’ll want
at the interview. These include a pen and paper to record important information, such
as the proper spelling of the interviewer’s name and the time and date of follow up
interviews; copies of your resume or application and references; and examples of
your work, such as writing samples.
The fourth passage:
1) opens with the advice: to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early;
2) considers carrying a briefcase to the interview.
74
Бабочки. Butterflies. Most people are nervous when interviewing. But remember: You have been asked to interview for the job because the employer believes
you could be right for it. The interview is your chance to confirm that belief and establish rapport.
To reduce nervousness, interviewers recommend getting a good night’s sleep
and maintaining your usual morning routine-if you never eat breakfast, for example,
don’t eat a hearty morning meal on interview day. They also recommend calling to
mind some of your happiest memories or proudest moments before arriving for the
interview.
And they remind jobseekers that each opening you interview for is not the only
one that exists. More than one company recruits for jobs. If one interview doesn’t go
well, another will.
The fifth passage:
1)
advises an applicant not to be nervous and confirm that you are right for
the job;
2)
provides some recommendations to reduce nervousness;
3)
reminds jobseekers that each opening is not the only one that exists.
Первые впечатления. First impressions. The interview begins the moment
you arrive. Everyone you meet, from the receptionist to the hiring manager, will form
an impression of you. To ensure the impression is positive, remember that your words
and mannerisms will affect the image you project. When greeting people, smile
warmly and shake hands. Make eye contact and maintain good posture. Don’t create
a negative impression by using slang, chewing gum, smoking cigarettes, or giving
curt, one word answers.
Interviewers suggest rehearsing with a career counselor or friend to gain confidence and poise. The goal is to become comfortable speaking about yourself, your
training and experience, and your career goals.
Standard politeness is important in an interview because the interviewer knows
very little about you. To be safe, never use the interviewer’s first name unless you are
invited to do so, and don’t sit down until the interviewer does.
The sixth passage:
1)
reminds us that the interview begins the moment you arrive, everyone
you meet forms an impression of you;
2)
advises an applicant to smile warmly when greets people and handshakes; warns not to use slang, chew gum, smoke cigarettes or give one word answers.
The seventh passage:
1)
reminds that standard politeness is important
2)
advises not to use the interviewer’s first name
3)
to be safe, and not to sit down until the interviewer does.
Ответы на вопросы. Responding to questions. After introductions, the interviewer will probably explain the job in more detail, discuss the company, or initiate
75
friendly conversation. The interviewer will then ask questions to try to gauge how
well you would fill the position.
References:
Последнее слово. Making the last word a good one
Before making a hiring decision, most employers want to speak with people
who know a candidate well. You should contact three to five people who will agree
to provide favorable recommendations about you to future employers.
Choosing references can be difficult, especially for people with little work experience. But there are more options than you might think. The people you ask to be
references should be familiar with your abilities. Supervisors from either paid or unpaid jobs, teachers, coaches, advisors, and coworkers are all good choices for references. Select the most willing, articulate people you can.
And always ask permission of the people you ask to be references before including their names on your reference list.
After choosing and contacting references, type a list providing their names, addresses, telephone numbers, and relationship to you. Bring copies of this list with you
to interviews.
When people agree to be references, help them to help you. Provide a copy of
your resume or application to remind them of your important accomplishments. Tell
them what kinds of jobs you are applying for so they know what types of questions to
expect.
When responding to the interviewer, avoid giving vague answers such as, «I
want to work with people» (or animals, or cars, or whatever the job entails). Instead,
describe the specific ways you want to work with them. You might also give examples of how you have successfully done so in the past. Focus on your strengths, but
always tell the truth.
The eighth passage reminds:
1) that the people you ask to be references should be familiar with your abilities;
2) to select the most willing, articulate people you can.
3) to tell the truth.
Responding to interview questions allows you to describe your best workrelated characteristics.
Many employers use resumes as guides, asking for additional details during the
interview. In addition to finding out more information, they may be trying to see how
well you can communicate your work to others.
Some interviewers ask questions about real-life job situations. For example,
they might ask candidates for a retail job how they would handle customer complaints.
Rather than trying to stay in control, let the interviewer direct the session. Listen attentively, and be sure to answer the question asked. Watch the interviewer’s
mannerisms for clues about whether to elaborate or keep your responses short.
Some jobseekers are so focused on specific answers, they forget to relax and
connect with the interviewer. An interview should be conversational. However, that
76
does not mean you are expected to speak without pause. You should stop to consider
an answer before responding to difficult or unexpected questions. And if a question is
confusing, ask for clarification.
Ваши вопросы. Turning the tables. At some point, usually toward the end
of the interview, you will have the opportunity to ask your own questions. This is
your chance to find out more about the company. After all, you may have to decide if
you want to work there. Some questions you might want to ask include:
· Who would supervise me?
· Can you describe a typical assignment?
· Are there opportunities for advancement?
· How do you train employees?
· What do you like most about working for this company?
An interview is not the time to inquire about salary or benefits. You don’t want
to seem more interested in financial rewards than in contributing to the company. If
asked about salary requirements, try to convey flexibility. The best time to discuss
earnings is after you have been offered the job.
Before leaving the interview, make sure you understand the next step in the hiring process. Find out whether there will be another round of interviews, whether you
should provide additional information, and when a hiring decision will be made.
Finally, be sure to thank the interviewer And if you are interested in the job, say so.
The ninth passage:
1) recommends some questions you might ask;
2) advises to try to convey flexibility if asked about salary requirements;
3) thank the interviewer and if you are interested in the job, say so.
Интервью по телефону.«Fuzzy slipper» interviews
For some interviews, what you wear makes no difference at all. Many employers conduct preliminary interviews over the telephone. This arrangement gives employers an opportunity to find the best prospects before investing time, effort, and, in
some cases, expense in arranging a face-to-face interview.
Telephone interviews are especially common for jobs that are out of State, attract many applications, or require a good telephone demeanor. A phone interview is
similar to a traditional interview, but it poses special challenges.
If your phone has a call-waiting feature, consider disabling it the day of the interview. You do not want to put the interviewer on hold, and persistent call waiting
beeps are distracting. Take advantage of being on your home turf by having your resume, pen, paper, appointment calendar, notes, and reminders within easy reach.
Remember to speak clearly and listen attentively, just as you would if you were
meeting with the interviewer in person. Even though no one can see you, your voice
betrays attitudes and confidence; sometimes, sitting up straight can help project enthusiasm over the phone.
At the end of the interview, express your willingness to speak with the employer in person. This is important, because most employers prefer to meet with a potential employee face to face before hiring.
77
После интервью. Following up. Even after the interview is over, your task is
not complete. Secure a good impression by sending a thank you letter to the interviewer. It is best to send the letter within 2 days of the interview, but any time is better than none.
Thank you letters should be brief – less than one page – and may be handwritten or typed. Their purpose is to express your appreciation for the interviewer’s time
and to reiterate your interest in the job.
Send a thank you letter within 2 days of the interview.
Most thank you letters have three main paragraphs.
·
The first paragraph is your chance to thank the interviewer for meeting
with you and to show enthusiasm for the job. Some suggest refreshing the interviewer’s memory by mentioning the date of the interview and the position for which
you applied.
·
The second paragraph is for you to briefly reiterate a few skills that
make you well suited for the job. You might also mention a topic from the interview
that was especially interesting to you. Also, include any important information you
forgot to mention during the interview.
·
The third paragraph is where you thank the interviewer again, give your
phone number, and state that you look forward to hearing from him or her.
Write or type the letter on solid white, off-white, or gray stationary. Use a
standard business format. Put a colon after the interviewer’s name and a space after
each paragraph. And don’t forget to sign your first and last name.
Many employers say an e-mailed thank you letter is acceptable if e-mail correspondence was exchanged between the interviewer and the candidate. Otherwise, an
e-mail message should not substitute for standard mail in most situations.
Address the letter to the person who interviewed you, and make sure to spell
his or her name correctly. If a group interviewed you, write either to each person you
spoke with or to the person who led and coordinated the interview, mentioning the
other people you met.
Finally, be sure to proofread the letter, and ask someone else to proofread it for
you, too. Interviewers tell tales of misspelled, misused words written in thank you letters that tarnish the image of an otherwise impressive candidate. As you write your
thank you note, remind yourself that you might be writing to your next supervisor.

Irene Moisejeva has just graduated from university and wants to train for a career in accountancy. She has applied to Davies, Taylor and Styles and has been invited to an interview for one of two graduate trainee posts. Competition is tough, and
Irene is one of only six candidates to reach this stage. There are three people on the
interview panel: Bob Hood, Helen McKay, and Mary Smith.
Mary: Hello Irene. Thank you for taking the time to come and see us again. Before we go any further, I’d like to introduce everyone here. Bob is the firm’s senior
78
partner, Helen has just qualified and I’m responsible for Human resources. I’ll hand
over to Bob first.
Bob: I’d like to repeat the welcome. We will use this opportunity to ask you
more about the information you’ve provided on your CV and to answer any questions
that you may have for us. My first question is to ask what you know about our firm.
Irene: I saw your brochure in the university careers center and was impressed
by what I read. I know you have some high-profile clients such as Westcom plc* and
Stylehouse* and that your graduate scheme has been running for nearly twenty years.
I did talk to a couple of the big firms in February, but your scheme struck me as the
most suitable.
Helen: Can you tell us what you find particularly attractive?
Irene: I like the idea of working for a smaller partnership as I feel it would give
me a wider range of experience. I would like to specialise later, perhaps in the area of
taxation.
Mary: Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
Irene: I would like to see myself progressing up the career ladder, perhaps as a
junior partner.
Jim: What particular skills have you acquired that you’ll bring to our firm?
Irene: I’m good at detail and have developed a flair for tracking down inconsistencies. I also have good listening skills which I consider to be important in accountancy.
The questions continue for another thirty minutes
Mary: Do you have any questions for us, Irene?
Irene: Yes, I would like to know when you expect to be making your decision.
Mary; We’re seeing all the candidates today and will be in a position to make a
decision tomorrow. You’ll hear from me by Friday whether you have been successful
or not.
Irene: That’s great. I will be back at my parents’ address from Sunday if you
need to contact me there.
Mary: Thank you for attending.

THE JOB INTERVIEW
A job interview is your opportunity to present your talents to a prospective employer. During the interview, the employer judges your qualifications, appearance,
and general fitness for the job. Equally important, the interview gives you a chance to
evaluate the job, the employer, and the company. The interview helps you decide if
the job meets your career needs and interests and whether the employer is the kind
you want to work for.
To present your qualifications most advantageously, you have to prepare for
the interview: you should know how to act to make the interview an opportunity to
«sell» your skills.
Careers officer speaking:
What makes a good interview? First, good preparation before the interview. Three
simple guidelines will help you. Guideline number one is find out as much as possible
about the company where you are going for an interview. For example, you can get a lot
of useful information from the company's brochures, annual reports, and catalogues.
Two, find out if the interview is with one person or with a group of people, and what
their jobs are. It's very useful to know something about the interviewers before you meet
them. And three, make a checklist of the questions you want to ask at the interview. Remember an interview is a two-way process. The company finds out as much as possible
about you, and you find as much as possible about the company.
So, that's what you need to do before the interview.
Now the interview itself. There are seven more guidelines to remember here.
Guideline number four: dress smartly. A suit or something formal is best. Five,
arrive in good time. Arriving late for the interview is the worst thing you can do. Rule
number six: create a good first impression. First impressions are very important. Start
the interview with a smile, a firm handshake, and a friendly manner. Guideline number seven: try to stay positive and relaxed during the interview. I know that's difficult.
As a rule, people don't feel relaxed, but your body language gives the interviewer a
lot of information about you. You want that information to be positive. Number eight:
don't give only «Yes» or «No» answers. Talk freely about yourself, give reasons for
your opinions, and explain why you're interested in the job. Nine: ask questions. Remember the checklist of questions you prepared before the interview. Show you're
interested! Finally, guideline number ten: learn from the interview. Analyse your performance afterwards and think how you can improve the next time!

LETTER WRITING IN ENGLISH
Задание 1. Прочитайте и переведите рекомендации по написанию писем.
Какие рекомендации вы считаете приемлемыми для себя? Начните ответ со
слов: I think…
Writing skills are often the most difficult skills for students of English as a foreign language to acquire. This may be because of the great emphasis on listening,
speaking, and reading in the classroom. Or it may be that their teachers have not had
special training in this area and feel unsure of their own writing competence. (This is
true of native-speaking as well as non-native-speaking teachers of English.) Whatever
the case, it is certainly true that guided writing practice in the early stages of English
instruction will help to (1) reinforce and integrate the development of all the language
skills and (2) prepare learners for the production of written English at more advanced
levels.
While there are important differences between spoken and written English—
for example, spoken English has more shortened forms, contractions, omissions, and
colloquial expressions — these differences need not intimidate the learner at the intermediate level, nor prevent the teacher from introducing real writing practice at this
stage. And real writing, that is, practicing realistic use of the language (in its simpler
written forms), is possible at this stage if the teacher provides good models and useful
vocabulary for life-like situations. Writing directions, taking down simple telephone
messages, making shopping lists are some examples of simple writing tasks in which
the students can actually practice writing English in everyday functions. Letter writing, with its many forms and uses, is another activity that is particularly advantageous for the following reasons:
· The vocabulary and structures in the letter may be taken from the students' own learned material.
· The letters may be short and simple in form and style, gradually increasing
in length and complexity as the students progress.
· The letter writing assignments may vary according to type and style as selected by the teacher and the students.
· The letters may be corrected and kept in the students' notebooks for actual use as models later on.
Задание 2. Ответьте на вопросы.
1. What is said about writing skills?
2. What can improve writing skills?
3. What is meant by «real writing «
83
4. How can students actually practice writing English?
5. What activity is particularly advantageous for written practice?
In addition to these reasons for practicing letter writing early in the English
language training, there is another even more pedagogically important reason to consider. Letters that are well-organized in form and content generally follow a pattern
that is similar to basic composition writing. A well-composed letter, like a good
composition in English, usually has three basic components:
1. A salutation, corresponding to the introduction;
2. A general message, corresponding to the body; and
3. A closing and signature, corresponding to the conclusion of the composition.
We see, then, that letter writing can be an effective means of introducing and
reinforcing the principles of good composition in English; the writer in both cases
must first organize his or her thoughts logically to convey the intended message.
General Format
Let's categorize the kinds of letters we are most likely to encounter into two
simple groups: social letters and business letters. For both types, indeed for almost
any letter written in English, there is a general layout or format that is followed and
several general components that are required. The following model sets out {I) the
writer's address, (2) the salutation to the addressee, (3) the body of message, (4) the
closing word or phrase, and (5) the writer's signature.
MODEL LETTER
writer's city/state/zip code writer's country month/day/year
salutation (Dear) + addressee's name.
body of the letter closing, (writer's name)
Note: Readers in American English usually expect to find these parts of a letter arranged in this way; they may be confused if the format is changed. In some
countries, for instance, the custom is to include the writer's name in the upper righthand corner above the writer's address. However, a reader accustomed to American
English letters may think that the (foreign) writer's name is a street, if it is written on
the first line of the address position.
Salutation — Приветствие
Salutations are placed on the left margin. As a general rule, when the writer
knows the addressee well and is on a «first name» basis (that is, if they call each
other by first name informally), the writer begins an informal social letter with Dear
followed by the addressee's first or given name:
Example: Dear John, Dear Mary, etc.
For formal social letters and business letters, however, the salutation Dear is
followed by the addressee's title and family name:
Example: Dear Mr. Smithson, Dear Dr. Jones, etc.
In business letter salutations, the reader may also note other forms: for example, Dear Publisher, Dear Editor, Dear Reader, Dear Parents, Dear Colleague, etc.
This avoids the use of Dear Sir and Gentlemen, which are now outdated as they as-
84
sume all readers are male, and overlook the growing number of women in the business world today.
In business letters, the reader may also note the use of Ms., which is the exact
linguistic equivalent of Mr.; that is, Ms. indicates female gender but not whether the
person is married. Some women still prefer to use Miss (unmarried) or Mrs. (married), but most business correspondence today uses Ms., unless it uses some form indicating the position or office for whom the letter is intended. (See the illustrations.)
Текст письма. Body of the Letter.
The letter itself may also begin exactly on the left margin, directly under the salutation, or it may be indented five spaces to the right, the traditional signal for a new
paragraph in English. If you prefer not to indent for each new paragraph, you should
leave an extra space between paragraphs.
Although we are mainly concerned with format here, it will be well to keep in
mind that the body of the letter contains the main message or «point.» Culturally
speaking, a native English language reader usually expects the writer of formal or business letters to (1) introduce him/herself, (2) state the purpose of the letter, and (3) conclude the letter. Note that the conclusion often may be a simple «thank you» for the
reader's attention.

The international conference
Jack Winter is attending an international Information Technology (IT) conference at the New Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham, England. He has just completed the registration formalities and is making his way towards the first session he
has booked. Soon he’s approached by a fellow delegate.
Jack: Hi. Are you going to the integrated systems session?
Paul: Yes, that’s the one in the main auditorium, I think.
Jack offers his hand in greeting.
Jack: I’m Jack Winter, Senior Vice President of Systems from I. S. USA. I see
from your badge you are Paul.
Paul: Paul lodge, Chief Systems Engineer from DIS AG.
Jack: Good to meet you, Paul. Are you staying here in town?
Paul: Yes, at the Post House. It’s just outside the city centre.
Jack: Well, we must meet up after the session. Here, let me give you my card.
Paul: Thank you, here’s mine.
Jack: Catch you later, Paul.
Paul: Yes, that’s right.
Another delegate approaches Paul.
Charles: Excuse me, do you know the way to the integrated systems session?
Paul: Yes, it’s this way. I’m going there myself.
Charles: Oh fine. Do you mind if I come along with you?
Paul: No, of course not.
Charles: I’m Charles by the way, Charles Shearer, from Elecom plc.
Paul: Paul Lodge, DIS AG.
Charles: Pleased to met you, Paul. I think we have a lot in common! Our people are spending a lot of time talking with yours at the moment.
Paul: Yes, that’s right. In fact, I met one of them last month. Robert Bridges,
one of your senior specialists, I think.
Charles: Yes. Bob runs the emergency support team in London. Do you have
any involvement with Americon?
Paul: Not that I’m aware of. Although you never know what talks are taking
place at high level.
100
Charles: One of their senior people is supposed to be here. A chap by the name
of Vince Newman. I’d like to meet him.
Paul:He’s going to be at this session, so you’ll get your opportunity.
Charles: That’s good. Anyway, we’d better get cracking, it’s due to start.

Business etiquette
On the whole, the German speaker will find fewer differences when conducting business in the UK and in the US than with the business cultures of other countries. A less formal approach may be adopted in some areas – Americans will usually
apply first name terms – but there are many similarities. Punctuality is expected –
particularly in the US – and lateness will meet with disapproval. The personal zone –
that is, the distance we feel most comfortable with when standing next to someone at
a social engagement or business meeting – is similar, at between 50 cm and 120 cm.
In the UK, there will be some small talk before turning to business matters; in
the US, they will quickly get down to business. In the UK and in the US, the hand is
generally offered in greeting, only on the first introduction and not at subsequent encounters.

Five Ways to Get Rich
It is widely believed that the most important reason to start a business is to make a lot of money. My personal feeling is that
the possibility of financial gain is one reason to start a company, but not necessarily the most important.
A recent survey of about 500 successful male entrepreneurs showed that the prospect of making a lot of money ranked sixth in
importance in a list of 10 reasons for starting a business. A similar survey of 113 women entrepreneurs showed the prospects for large
financial rewards ranked 11th in list of 16 reasons.
Each fall Forbes magazine devotes almost an entire issue to listing the 400 wealthiest people in the United States. Rush to your
nearest library to get a copy - it is fascinating. About half of the top 100 people on the 1991 Forbes list made their fortune by starting
their own businesses. Here are a few names you may recognize.
Though not all of them make the Forbes list, it is estimated that about 2 million U.S. men and millionaires and that nearly 90
percent made their fortunes by starting their own companies.
The point here is to emphasize the unarguable fact that by starting a company it is possible to make an amount of money that
stagger the imagination. It has been done, it is being done now, and it will continue to be done in the future. The potential financial
rewards of entrepreneurship are huge.
How about the downside?
At RF Communication each of the four founders invested $5.000. That does not sound like much now, but in 1961 it was about
one-third of a year's salary. And, worse yet, none of us had $5.000. We borrowed, put the touch on relatives, cashed insurance policies,
etc. As difficult as it was to scrape up the money and as uncomfortable as it felt at the time, the situation was not all bad.
We knew exactly what our downside financial risk was -$5.000. Since this represented about two or three years of saving we
concluded that it was an acceptable risk. Most important the ratio of potential financial reward to known
financial risk was high.
As it turned out, eight years later RF Communication merged with Harris Corp. and the four of us made a great deal of money, far more
then we would have dared dream when we started the company.
I emphasize this point to my entrepreneurship classes by giving a short exam. I ask the class to list the best ways to get rich. These are my
answers:
1) The best way to rich is born rich. No close second. On the Forbes list more people who did тое start companies became rich by
inheritance.
2)
The second best way, also by wide margin, is to marry rich. This is a problem since most people are quite young when they marry
and aren't experienced enough to recognize the importance of picking a wealthy mate.
3)
Third place is to win a state lottery. Unfortunately, the probability of winning a state lottery is far lower than the probability of being
born rich.
4)
Fourth place, in a close finish, is show business. Be an Elizabeth Taylor, a Johnny Carson, or a Michael Jackson. Show business,
unfortunately, also requires that you have some talent. Incidentally, both Elizabeth Taylor and Johnny Carson seem determined to
do the best they can to help a number of people marry rich.
5)
The fifth way is to start a company. And the reality is that this is the only way available to most of us, and clearly has the best odds.
Several years ago I decided to do a bit of rigorous scientific research on this subject in an attempt to confirm the above premise.
The research was conducted at the Rochester Yacht Club where I am a member and where I docked my 44-foot sailboat. Using the boat
population of the club as my sample I first ascertained that the crossover between a "small" boat and a "big" boat occurred at about 35
feet. Almost with-out exception the "big" boats were owned by people who had started their own companies. The "small" boat were
owned by Ph. D. chemists from Kodak.
There is no doubt in my mind that the only opportunity available to most people to make a lot of money is to start a company. The
prospect for large financial reward may not de your primary motivation for starting a company but it certainly has a lot of appeal. Be
aware that the potential for huge returns is there and the downside, in comparison, can be acceptably low.
UNIT 15
BANKS AND FINANCES
A bank is an establishment for keeping money, valuables safely, the money being paid out on customer’s order (by means of cheques).
105
Banks are different in different countries. Let's speak about the banks in the
United States of America. There, commercial banks are classified into two main
groups. First, there are national banks. They are charted and supervised by the Federal Government. Secondly there are state banks. They are charted and supervised by
the state in which they are operated. All commercial banks can make loans to borrowers.
Major Commercial banks in such cities as Tokyo, Paris, Rio cooperate with
each other. In this way they finance imports and exports between countries.
An importer buys merchandise from another country using the currency of that
country. For that purpose he buys this currency from the foreign exchange department of this bank. And in the same way if an exporter receives foreign money from
sales to other countries, he sends this currency to his bank. By this method the currency of any country can usually be exchanged.

A bank is a place of business that safeguards, lends, exchanges, and issues money
and carries on a number of other financial dealings. The money is being paid out on
customer`s order (by means of cheques.). Banks are different in different countries. In
106
the United States of America commercial banks are classified into two main groups.
First, there are national banks. They are charted and supervised by the Federal Government. Secondly, there are state banks. They are charted and supervised by the state in
which they are operated. All commercial banks can make loans to borrowers. Major
commercial banks in such cities as Tokyo, Paris, Rio cooperate with each other. In this
way they finance imports and exports between countries. An importer buys merchandise from another country using the currency of that country. For that purpose he buys
this currency from the foreign exchange department of this bank. And in the same way
if an exporter receives foreign money from sales to other countries, he sells this currency to his bank. By this method the currency of any country can usually be exchanged.
Most banks in the US open at 9:00 and close between 3:00 and 5:00, but stay
open later on Fridays. Some banks have longer hours in order to attract customers.
What's the best way to carry money safely while you are travelling? There are
three possibilities — personal checks from your country, traveler's checks and credit
cards. Some American banks accept foreign checks such as Eurocheques, the problem is that only banks, which are used to dealing with foreigners will know what
Eurocheques are.
It may be more convenient to carry traveller's checks, which are insured against
loss. They should be in dollars, because only a few banks do much business in foreign currencies. If your checks are not in dollars, it may take you a long time to find a
bank that will exchange them. You can use traveller's checks almost anywhere — in
restaurants, stores or ticket offices — without having to go to a bank. If you run out
of them, you can buy more at most banks. Their service charge will vary, though, so
ask what it is before you buy your checks. Americans would say the best way to carry
money it is to have a major credit card like Visa, Master Card or American Express.
Credit cards can be cancelled if they are lost or stolen. And because they are widely
accepted in the US, it is easy to use them to pay for lodging, transportation, meals and
things you want to buy from larger stores.
Of course, you can't get along without cash, but you don't need to carry much
with you.

Peter lost his traveller's cheques. He went to the traveller's cheques office and
they told him that he had to call New York before they could do anything. They let
him use their phone — it was a toll-free number. The clerk asked him how much he
had lost and what the cheque numbers were. Luckily, he had them written down.
Then the clerk wanted to know where he bought the cheques and if he had any ID.
Peter gave him his passport number. The clerk gave Peter «a file number» and told
him where the nearest refund office was. Peter told the clerk he had already been

American money comes in coins worth 1 (pennies), 5 (nickels), 10 (dimes), 25
(quarters), and 50, though half dollars aren't very common. Paper money is in denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 20 dollars. Two, fifty and one-hundred dollar bills exist,
but they are not common, so don't be surprised if a store clerk looks very closely at a
hundred dollar bill to make sure it's real.
When you pay for something with your credit card, the salesman will take your
card and fill out a form using a computer. He will ask you to sign the form and then
give you a copy. The credit card company will send you a bill once a month, showing
the purchases you've made.
If you write a personal cheque and it bounces, you'll have to pay the bank a
high service charge. So be sure you have enough money in your bank account to

«Good morning, sir. Can I help you?"
«Yes, I think so. I would like to open an account."
«What kind of are you interested in?"
«You see, I have some spare money to put into the bank."
«Then you should open either a savings or a checking account."
«I'm afraid I know nothing about either of them.
Could you tell me the difference between these two accounts?"
«A small initial deposit is necessary to open a savings account at our bank. If it
is more than five hundred dollars and you maintain this amount, then you won't be
charged for banking services. Otherwise you will be charged five dollars a month.
So, I must keep a minimum balance of $500, is that correct? «Yes, that's right.
Our computers check your average daily balance."
«And will I get a banking card after opening an account?"
«Yes, certainly. And then you can get your money through machine services.
You can make deposits, cash withdrawals and balance inquiries with your card. The
machine is at work 24 hours a day."
«Oh, it's very convenient. And may I ask what a checking account means?"
«Certainly, sir. After opening a checking account you are supposed to maintain
an average daily balance of $1,000."
«And what if I fall below this limit?"
113
«Then you would have to pay a service charge of six dollars a month, and besides you will be charged 25cents for each check and the same amount for each cash
withdrawal."
«Hmm, I see. And can I avoid it somehow?"
«Yes, of course. It may be done by keeping your $1,000 in your checking account."
«And how much interest do you pay?"
«Interest of 6.5 % is paid when your average daily balance is over $2,500. We
credit the interest you've earned automatically to your account."
«Well, it's clear enough, but I intended to put only $1,000 into the account."
«Then it would be more profitable for you to open a savings account."
«Okay. I've made up my mind. I will open a savings account with a deposit of
one thousand dollars."
«Fine. Will you fill out this application?» The client fills out the application.
«Is everything correct?"
«Yes, everything is all right. And now you need to write a deposit ticket for $1,000."
