MADONNA – IS SHE A MATERIAL GIRL?
Some people say that Madonna is neither a great singer nor a good actress, but
millions of fans still admire and love her. She was born in Bay City, Michigan on
August 16, 1958 in a family of Italian origin. Her real name was Madonna Louise
Ciccone. After the death of her mother she and her three sisters and four brothers
were brought up by her father and stepmother. She grew up in Pontiac, Michigan, in
the suburbs of Detroit.
Career
Madonna began her career as a completely unknown girl singing sweet songs,
which quickly brought her popularity. One of her most famous songs from her earlier
period is “Material Girl”, in which the artist imitates the famous film sequence by
Marilyn Monroe. Her image often changes. First a girl with long dark hair, she turns
into a shorthaired blonde.
Madonna is also known as an actress. Perhaps her biggest success was playing
the leading role in the musical “Evita”, where she co-starred with Antonio Banderas.
Today the singer is one of the richest and most powerful celebrities in show
business. Despite being such a big success with so many hits it seems that she has not
said her final word yet.

of records, and has got thousands of fans in many countries.
Childhood in Canada

When Céline was 13 years old, she composed a song together with her brother.
René Angélil, a manager, heard the demo tape, and was extremely impressed by Céline’s voice. He decided to make her an international star and succeeded in this. Today, René Angélil is also her husband.

VANESSA MAE – THE VIOLIN PLAYER
Vanessa Mae is a real phenomenon in the music world – playing her violin, she
brings tradition and modernity together, and doing something no one has managed to
do so well in many years.
Her music career
At four, Vanessa moved to London, where she became a British national.
When she was three years old, she started playing the piano but two years later she
gave it up for the violin. At the age of ten, she performed with the Philharmonic and
when she was twelve she toured internationally with the London Mozart Players. She
was also the youngest musician to record the Tchaikovsky and Beethoven Violin
Concertos.
Her style
Probably her best-known album is “The Violin Player”, which brought her
popularity in many countries around the world. In her music, Vanessa mixes many
musical styles and uses acoustic and electric violins. Vanessa performs all year
round, especially in the UK. Before each concert she always walks over freshly spilt
water between the dressing room and the stage. It’s for good luck!

TINA TURNER
Tina Turner is definitely one of the best singers on the music world today.
Probably everyone in the world knows her name as well as her hits like “Private
Dancer” or “What’s Love Got To Do With It”. She has come a long way to reach the
top and she is going to stay there as long as possible.
Childhood
Her real name is Anna Mae Bullock. She was born in Brownsville, Tennessee
in 1938 and brought up in the small town of Nutbush. After a few years, Anna and
her sister moved to St. Louis. She met Ike Turner there and started to work with him,

creating a new band: The Ike and Tina Turner Revue. In 1960 Ike and Tina got married and were soon one of the most famous couples in the US.
Change
Although their songs were all hits, their private life was a disaster. Ike turned
out to be very aggressive and violent and by 1976 Tina had had enough. She decided
to break free and start from scratch. She had four children to support and to no
money. Luckily she met Roger Davis in 1979, a manager who decided to help her and
brought her back to the world of rock’n’roll.

“BLONDIE”
“Blondie” was the greatest New Wave Punk group. They used and mixed all
types of music including punk, funk, disco, rock and reggae. They played whatever
they liked and produced many unforgettable and unique hits, including “Heart of
Glass”, “Call Me” and “The Tide is High”. After 16 years, they have returned with a
new album “No Exit”.
The Beginning
The group was started in 1974 by Chris Stein, an art student and hippie, and
Debbie Harry, an ex-waitress. Two other members of the group: Clem Burke and
Jimmy Destri, joined the two a year later. Their first album “Blondie” was released
in 1977 and was warmly welcomed by both the record-buying public and the critics.
Soon afterwards the group went on their first tour supporting Iggy Pop and David
Bowie. For a few years “Blondie” was constantly at the top of the charts but around
1982 things started to go wrong.
Chris became seriously ill and Debbie decided to look after him, which she did
for many years. As a result, the group split up with every member trying to do something individually. That’s until recently, though. The new group album seems to be
uniting them again.

“Blondie” was the greatest pop group.
One of its members was a waitress.
Around 1982 the group split up.
Their new album is rather disappointing.
“BLUR”
How did it all start?
The frontman – Damon Albarn met Graham Coxon at school and later teamed
up with a musician named Dave Rowntree and a student Alex James. Their first album “Leisure” was released in 1991 and was a mix of psychedelic tuneless music
and traditional British pop. It did not really catch on and only the third album
“Parklife” became a real hit and sold extremely well. Even when the group changed
the direction of their music their “Parklife” style was copied by many other bands.
“13”
In 1999 Blur recorded “13” – the album that was the apotheosis of the process
of changing direction and moving towards experimental sounds in music. Blur finally
liberated themselves in an artistic sense and gained real freedom. They improvise a
lot, which makes their sound a little abstract and at the same time full of detail and
inspiring moments. “13” is an album of a mature group which has finally found its
real identity in the music world.

CHER
Cher and Bono
She was born in El Centro, California, as Cherilyn Sarkisian. Her mother was
an actress, which may have influenced Cher’s life. When she was a teenager, she met
her great love, Sonny Bono, at a Hollywood Boulevard café. She went with him to
Phil Spector’s Gold Star Studios and sang back-up replacement for another girl who
failed to show up that day. From that moment on she sang back-up for Phil Spector
and also recorded some songs with Sonny Bono.
Their duo, called “Sonny and Cher”, had their first hits in 1965, including the
unforgettable song “I Got You Babe”. Their growing popularity led to their own TV
show “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour”, which began in 1971 on the CBS channel.
Cher, the actress
However, Cher is not only a singer, but also a great actress. She was nominated
for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Silkwood” and
received the Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for “Mask” in 1985. Her other
well-known films are, among others, “The Witches of Eastwick” and “Mermaids”.

ELLA FITZGERALD
The critics called her perfect and the people loved her. Ella Fitzgerald’s greatest treasure was her voice: powerful, fascinating and amazing. Ella was particularly
known for the diversity of her music. She sang both swing and jazz as well as classics
and modern songs. She loved blues, gospel, bossa nova, and Christmas carols. Whatever she sang was beautiful and unforgettable, just as she was.
Her career
Most biographers agree that Ella Fitzgerald was born in Newport News, Virginia, on 25th April 1918 and then moved to Yonkers with her mother and stepfather.
Very little is known about her childhood, but there is a story which says that when
her mother died, Ella ran away from home and earned money by singing on the
streets of Harlem.
At the age of 16 she won a singing contest at the Harlem Opera House, and the
prize was a weeklong professional engagement. This was the beginning of her career.
She knew that she was entering a world dominated by male vocalists, and she realized that in order to be noticed, she would have to be famous. As history has shown,
she achieved this.

The band’s original name was Chain Reaction and the first members of the
group were Jack Irons, Alan Johannes, and Hillel Slovak. The Anthony Kiedis joined
the band and is now the lead vocalist. Since the 1980s, the band has changed guitarists a few times and released a few memorable albums. Their biggest hit was “Blood
Sugar Sex Magik”, which went triple platinum.

“TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS”
“Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers” have now been in music business for over
25 years, which represents a huge period of creative growth and commercial success.
They have also more recently received critical acclaim: in 1994 their song “Mary
Jane’s Last Dance” won the MTV Best Male Video, and in 1996 Tom Petty received
the Golden Note Award for the best songwriter and the George and Ira Gershwin
Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement. This was a particular high point for him,
as in the same year he also received his own star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood.
This not only honoured his musical achievements but also his involvement in such
organizations as Greenpeace and the American Foundation for AIDS Research.
Their career
“Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers” released their debut album in 1976, which a
year later entered both the American and European charts. Then, almost every year,
they released an increasingly successful album. Their most famous songs are “Learning To Fly” and “Into The Great Wide Open”, both from the same album. “Free Falling” was another hit, but it came from Tom Petty’s solo album “Full Moon Fever”,
released in 1989.

“JAMIROQUAI”
“Jamiroquai” was formed in 1992 by Jason Kay. Their name comes from the
name of one of the North American Indian tribes. First playing underground music in
clubs, they went on to release their debut album called “Emergency on Planet
Earth”, which became a UK number one hit in June 1993. It was the best-selling
British debut of the year and soon the group started to work on its new albums. The
music they play is hard to define: it combines funk, jazz, and disco and is definitely
unique. “Jamiroquai” have their own sound, which has become recognizable all over
the world.
Their hits
Such songs as “Virtual Insanity” and “Cosmic Girl”, all from the group’s
third album, “Traveling Without Moving”, only served to prove the group’s talent.
“Jamiroquai” were also highly praised by the music critics: they received several
awards, including a Grammy and several MTV awards. In 1998 their hit “Deeper
Underground”, which Jay Kay wrote especially for the “Godzilla” film, was again at
the top of the charts.

ELVIS PRESLEY
Elvis Aaron Presley was a real phenomenon in the world of music. Even
though he died in 1977, his legend is still alive just like his music.
Early years
He was born on 8th January 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi. From his earliest
years, Elvis attended the Pentecostal Church and listened to psalms and gospel songs.
He also had some contact with country and blues, which later resulted in his unique
musical identity. When Elvis was 13, his family moved to Memphis, where, after finishing school, he worked as a truck driver. One day he visited Sun Records to record
a song as a birthday present for his mother and that was when his unusual voice was
noticed. Sun Records’ owner finally found what he had been looking for: a white boy
who sang like a black. The response from the public was enormous and Elvis
Presley’s voice began to be recognizable by more and more people.
The King
Elvis Presley was one of the creators of rock’n’roll music and was slowly becoming its symbol. Such songs as “It’s Now Or Never”, “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” and “Love Me Tender” became the best known songs ever written. At the
end of the 1960s together with the Beatles, new trends in music began to appear. Elvis Presley tried to record new songs and played in Hollywood films, and slowly his
popularity began to fade. Everything in his life seemed to change for the worse: he
divorced in 1973; he became a drug addict and put on weight. Despite this, he kept
performing, wearing brightly colored suits with large jeweled belts. Finally his body
gave. He died on 16 August 1977, officially of a heart attack, which was undoubtedly
caused by s continuous barbiturate usage.

GEORGE GERSHWIN
Born on 26th September 1898, the famous composer George Gershwin changed
the American musical for ever. As child he had little time for music as he devoted
most of his energy to skating. When George was 12, however, the first piano arrived
at the Gershwin household and to everyone’s surprise; George was able to play a
simple tune on it. Nobody in the family knew George could play and he himself explained that he learned the tune by following the key indentations when his neighbor
was playing the piano.
When George was 15, he quit school and worked in bars as a pianist while at
the same time composing his first songs. Finally in 1916, after struggling for a few
years to publish his work, he succeeded with a song he co-wrote with Murray Roth.
This is how George Gershwin’s name became known in the music world.
His music
In the 1920s George teamed up with his older brother Ira and the two became
the most popular Broadway songwriters of the period. Together they composed a lot
of rhythmic ballads and created altogether 22 musical comedies, including “Lady, Be
Good!” in 1924, “Oh, Kay!” in 1927, and “Of Thee I Sing” in 1931. But Gershwin
not only wrote musicals but he also composed what he called “serious music”, including the famous “Rhapsody in Blue”, “An American in Paris”, and “Piano Concerto in F”.

ROBBIE WILLIAMS
When Robbie Williams left “Take That” in 1995, his fans were devastated.
One of his reasons for leaving the band was that he felt trapped by certain rules the
group lived by and could never really behave the way he wanted. His first solo single
was George Michael’s “Freedom”, which reached number two in the UK charts.
Even though Robbie’s professional life seemed to be fine, he began to have serious personal problems. In 1997 he underwent treatment for drug and alcohol addiction in a rehabilitation center. Leaving there at the end of his treatment marked a real
starting point in his new career. Since then he has released songs, which have been
hits all over the world, and he was awarded a number of Brit Awards.

JENNIFER LOPEZ
She is the most famous singer of Latin American origin after Gloria Estefan
and Ricky Martin. She was born into a Puerto Rican family and lived in a poor district of New York. When she was five years old, she started attending dance lessons
and decided to continue with this when she got older. She wanted to be an actress,

singer, and dancer, when she was sixteen. She took part in a dance contest, which she
won and which opened the doors to the film industry for her. At first she had only
small, insignificant roles. Her first important TV series was in 1994 when she appeared in Aaron Spelling’s series “Malibu Hotel”. She was liked by the audience but
she did not want to be a soap opera star for ever. She dreamed of more ambitious
roles.
Her musical career
She has started to sing and, what is more, quite successfully. The critics are often very doubtful about her voice, but the public certainly seems to like her.

STING
Sting has been in the music business for many years and he has fans from all
age groups. Almost all of his records have been chart hits and some of them like
“Every Breath You Take” or “Englishman in New York”, are among his best known.
Sting’s artistic pseudonym comes from the fact that he used to wear a T-shirt with
yellow and black stripes.
Steps to his career
His real name is Gordon Matthew Summer and he was born on 2nd October
1951 in Newcastle. Sting became interested in music by chance, when his uncle left a
guitar in Sting’s house for some time. Just after the beginning of the academic year at
Warwick University, Sting decided to drop out and start work. He played bass guitar.
In 1976 he met Steward Copeland, with whom he soon founded “The Police” – the
group, which made him world famous. After years of playing with “The Police”,
Sting left the group and decided to pursue a solo career.
His private life
Sting leads a very peaceful life. He is happily married to his second wife,
Trudy Styler, whom he met in London. Sting has six children and as he himself says
he tries not to spoil them too much. Sting is very well known for his proenvironmental activity: he has established the Rainforest Foundation and donated a
lot of money to save the Amazonian rain forests.

“THE ROLLING STONES”
Apart from “The Beatles”, “The Rolling Stones” are the most famous British
group. What’s more they are still recording and still have thousands of fans all over
the world. “The Rolling Stones” were originally five people: Mick Jagger – vocalist,
Keith Richards – guitarist and vocalist, Brian Jones – guitarist, Bill Wyman – bass
guitarist, and Charlie Watts – drums. Mick Jagger is of course the group’s most famous figure and his wild character has undoubtedly shaped the band’s image.
The ‘60s
Jagger and Richards formed a band which Jones, Wyman, and Watts later
joined. They called themselves “The Rolling Stones” after a Muddy Waters song and
started playing in various clubs. In June 1963 they released their first single and in
1964 did their fist British tour, with their songs reaching higher and higher positions
in the charts. The 1964 US trip was a brilliant success, which helped them break into
the difficult US market.
Their success
What made “The Rolling Stones” so successful? Definitely their music, based
on blues and rock, but also a very specific bad boy image. The group caused a lot of
controversy with songs about brutality, sex and other taboo topics. As a result, some
of their lyrics were sometimes censored, which only gave them more publicity. In addition their behavior was often shocking. However, nothing changes the fact that
“The Rolling Stones” are one of the most successful bands ever, and even though
only three of the original members remain – Jagger, Richards and Watts – they still
get plenty of satisfaction from playing and recording together.

ELTON JOHN
Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on the 25tgh March 1947 in
Pinner, Middlesex, England. He had already started taking piano lessons at the age of
four and later went on to the Royal Academy of Music. He formed his first band
Bluesology in the early 1960s, but one day during a meeting with a music producer
he met Bernie Taupin, who turned out to have similar musical tastes to his own. The
result of their friendship was their first song “Scarecrow”. By then Reg Dwight had
changed his name to Elton John, having borrowed his colleagues’ names from his
former band.
The duo
In 1968 Elton John and Bernie Taupin teamed up together and wrote several
songs, but despite quite favorable reviews were ignored by the wider public. However, recognition finally came in 1970 with the album “Elton John”, which included
“Your Song” which soon after went to no. 2 in the UK charts and established John as
an up-and-coming star. He spent the next 2 years touring the US, which established
his star status and where he wrote ridiculous outfits and funny spectacles. During that
time John became a living legend. The 1970s were a great time for him: his songs
were topping the charts and he himself became a real music phenomenon. At the end
of 1970s the John – Taupin songwriting partnership came to an end and Elton John
started to work on his own.
Solo career
Apart from being one of the best musicians in the world, his openness about his
bisexuality and excessive consumerism made him a popular personality as well.
Among his many other highly successful songs are “Rocket Man”, “Crocodile
Rock”, and “Daniel”. After a short period of poor-selling albums in the very early
1980s, he returned in 1983 with “I’m Still Standing”, when he again teamed up with
Taupin and his short-lived marriage to Renate Blauel also kept him in the limelight.

In 1991 he was included in a list of the 200 wealthiest people in Great Britain. The
1990s gave him new life again as one of the world’s top performers with “Made in
England” – widely regarded as one of his best ever albums – and later “The Big Picture”. But the high point of his career during a spectacular decade for him was his
specially rewritten version of “Candle in The Wind” for Princess Diana’s funeral in
1997. He also wrote the Academy-Award-winning music for the animated film and
stage production “The Lion King”.

BOB DYLAN
Bob Dylan is without doubt one of the most influential figures in the history of
popular music. He is as famous for his music as he is for his lyrics. Born in 1941 in
Minnesota as Robert Allen Zimmerman, he grew up being fascinated by James Dean
movies, riding motorcycles, and listening to R & B songs on the radio. He also
started playing music himself in teenage bands and when he moved to Minneapolis to
go to university there, he discovered blues, which he started to incorporate into what
he played. Slowly, his appearance and way of speaking were also transformed and,
after having cast himself in the role of a real performer, he set off in 1961 to conquer
New York.
New York
Dylan had a great impact on Greenwich Village people, who were captivated
by his music, his charisma and the whole atmosphere around him stemming from the
various tales he told everybody about his background and life. As his popularity
grew, he was asked to play harmonica on other musicians’ records and consequently
was offered a contract by Columbia Records, which resulted in him releasing his own
debut album called simply “Bob Dylan”. From then on he gradually nurtured his position of the leading blues and rock artist in the US. From protest songs like “Blowing
in the Wind” he went on to write more elaborate lyrics, inspired by the poetry of John
Keats and French symbolist Arthur Rimbaud. This was what really made him most
influential artist of the ‘60s – unquestionably his best period. Since then he has had

his ups and downs, losing his form and then regaining it, but always close to music,
either composing it himself or working with other artists, for example with Mark
Knopfler or Tom Petty in the 1980s. In the 1990s, however, most of his work or performances were based on his past achievements. Despite this he still remains and will
always be an immensely important symbol in the world of rock music.

“EURYTHMICS”
Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox are one of the most acclaimed pop duos in the
world. This is due to Dave’s remarkable ability to write good, melodic songs, which
are beautifully performed by Annie. It all started when they met in London while
Dave was still a member of the folk-rock band “Longdance”. At that time Annie was
working as a waitress and studying at the Royal College of Music. Together they
formed the band, “The Tourist” which coincided with their much-publicized love affair. After the group’s split, the two formed ”The Eurythmics” in 1980.
Together
Even though their first album was a flop, all their subsequent ones topped the
charts. Their first hit, “Love Is A Stranger”, gave them a lot of confidence to make
their superb second album “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)”, which was accompanied by equally distinctive and self-produced videos. “Sweet Dreams (Are Made
Of This)”, “Who’s That Girl?” and “Right By Your Side” all originate from around
this period and remain their best known hits.1985 was a remarkable year for both of
them; although Annie had some throat problems and had to cancel several concerts,
she made her screen debut in “Revolution”. In the meantime, Dave became one of the
most sought-after music producers. However, this didn’t mean that the duo was finished – in fact at the end of the ‘80s they continued to release some very successful

albums until their 1989 album, “We Too Are One”, which seemed to signal the end
of the group. From then on they both embarked on solo careers, Dave mostly as a
writer and producer and Annie as a singer, releasing two albums, “Diva” and “Medusa”. Fortunately they teamed up again in 1999 on the album “Peace”, which was a
great comeback for this very popular duo.

“METALLICA”
“Metallica” first appeared some twenty years ago playing very heavy music,
which gradually softened a little without losing their fans. On the contrary, in fact
“Metallica” has become a classic metal group, whose records are bought by millions
of young people all over the world. “Metallica’s” Danish founder Lars Ulrich’s first
contact with this type of music was when his father took him to a “Deep Purple”
concert when the lad was only twelve years old. The experience seems to have
changed his whole life. For his 13th birthday Lars got a drum kit and started neglecting his tennis training, which was intended to make him a great tennis player, like his
father. Seeing this, the whole family moved to the US, where Lars was placed in a
tennis boarding school. However, this did not extinguish his fascination for metal
music.
Forming the band
Having decided to form a group Lars started looking for musicians. He found
the first one through an ad – this was James Hetfield, the future “Metallica” vocalist
and guitarist. They were joined by Ron McGovney and Dave Mustaine (later replaced
by Kirk Hammett), and Cliff Burton, who died in an accident in 1986 on the way to a
concert. He was subsequently replaced by Jason Newsted. “Metallica’s” first album
was a real shock, not only because of the lyrics but because of the music, played with
such fury. The musical style was also matched by the lifestyle of the group members,
21

based on ignoring everything and everybody. “Metallica’s” popularity soon grew,
though not always with positive features. They were often accused of influencing
young people to be violent because of their songs. They themselves often got pleasure in trashing hotel rooms and concert venues. Whatever their popularity is based
on, one fact remains – they are the most famous metal group in the world. And even
if they do not record anything else in the near future, they can always be sure that
their fans will be there to welcome their next album.

“U2”
Since their formation in the late ‘70s at Dublin’s Mount Temple High School,
“U2” have sold over 75 million albums and become one of the classic rock bands of
their generation. They are known for both their characteristic sound and strong political and religious statements. The combination of perfect music and the personality of
their lead singer, Bono, make the band one of the most popular groups in the world.
Forming the band
It all started when Larry Mullen, a drummer, pinned a notice on a high school
board, searching for musicians to form a band. Four people responded to the ad:
Bono, whose real name is Paul Hewson, the Edge – David Evans, Adam Clayton, and
Dick Evans. They formed a group called “Feedback’, later changing this to “Hype”.
Shortly afterwards, Dick Evans left the band and after his departure, the group
changed their name to “U2”.
A taste of success
22

“U2’s” first big break came in 1978, when they won a talent contest, and the
following year the group released their first records, which were well received in Ireland. Even though the band started playing in England, it received little attention. A
change came only in early 1980, when Island Records offered them a contract. Their
strong political messages in songs like “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “New Year’s
Day” brought them a growing legion of fans. But it was the band’s appearance at the
Live Aid concert that really brought the band to the world’s attention. This was further consolidated with their 1987 album “The Joshua Tree” featuring “With Or
Without You” and “Where The Streets Have No Name”, at which time they became
real superstars. Their album “Pop” produced in 1997 was a big success and different
from the previous albums in that they included dance music. The music was featured
in their spectacular worldwide “Popmart” tour. They were awarded with Grammys
for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance. “U2” became the greatest rock
band in the world.

JOE COCKER
Joe Cocker is one of those rare rock stars who started his career in the sixties
and has managed to survive all the changing trends in pop music. Today he is still
performing and releasing new songs for his legion of fans all over the world.
From England to America
He was born John Robert Cocker on 20th May 1944 in Sheffield in England.
His career started in the mid-sixties – his day job was a plumber while at night he
performed with the band “The Avengers” in local clubs. In 1968, together with his
23

friend Chris Stainton, he recorded his big hit “With a Little Help From My Friends”.
The song went straight to the top of the UK charts. In 1969, Cocker and his band
went on tour in America and became huge stars, partly due to a large number of concerts and partly due to Cocker’s performance at the Woodstock Festival, which until
this day is still remembered by many of those who were there. However, success did
not bring him happiness, and during the seventies he turned increasingly to alcohol
and drugs. Although his popularity declined, he made a comeback in the eighties with
such albums as “Unchain My Heart” and “One Night of Sin”.
The nineties
His 1994 tour was strongly promoted as Joe Cocker’s return to the music
world. Thanks to the fact that the tour was based on one of his best albums to date,
“Have a Little Faith”, it was a great success. A special documentary was also prepared to recast his public image in contrast to the way people remembered him from
the seventies. It certainly seemed to work as Joe Cocker is now regarded as one of the
best rock performers of our times, and is writing some of his best material ever.

“TEXAS”
“Texas” are four people: Sharleen Spiteri, vocals and guitar; Eddie Campbell,
keyboards; Johny McElhone, bass; and Ally McErlaine, guitar. They all still live in
their home city of Glasgow. Their 1999 album “The Hush” was almost entirely recorded in Sharleen’s private home studio. According to the band, it is their best album to date because, for the first time, all the musical styles that have influenced
them were collected together on one record.
How did the band form?
“Texas” formed in 1986 when Johnny McElhone, who had already played in
several previous bands, started looking for some people to form a new musical band.
His brother Gerry, who later became “Texas’s” manager, had heard somewhere
about Sharleen’s singing. Even though she had never been in any band before, Gerry
asked her to come and sing something. The result was immediate musical cooperation
and their first hit song I Don’t Want A Lover. The band’s name derives from Sherleen

“PINK FLOYD”
“Pink Floyd” were formed in 1965 and were originally called “Sigma Six”. To
begin with, there were only three people in the group: Roger Waters, Rick Wright,
and Nick Mason. Not long after, though, Waters decided to change their direction and
brought in Syd Barrett, his friend from secondary school. It was Barrett who gave
them the name “Pink Floyd”, after two American blues musicians, Pink Anderson
and Floyd Council, and it was him that was predominantly responsible for creating
the group’s unique style.
Psychedelic sound
“Pink Floyd’s” first gigs only attracted small audiences, but after the success
of their debut album, “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn”, their popularity soared. A
few years later Syd Barrett left the group because of psychological problems, and was
replaced by David Gilmour. Their musical style was characterized by psychedelic
noises, sound experimentation, and original lyrical themes. The 70’s were a great
time for the group. Their album “Dark Side of the Moon” came out in 1973 and
stayed in the charts for thirteen consecutive years. In 1975 they released their famous
“Wish You Were Here” and four years later came their best-known album, “The
Wall”. After splitting up in 1983, the band reformed in 1987. In 1994 the released the
album “The Division Bell”, and their continued success is proof that they have still
not lost any of their originality.

BOB MARLEY
The son of a middle-aged father and a teenage black mother, Robert Nesta
Marley managed to break loose from his poor Jamaican background to become reggae’s biggest star. He also became a semireligious symbol promoting peace, justice,
and brotherhood among all people. Bob Marley began singing professionally at the
age of sixteen with two friends and made his first record in 1962. Four years later he
married Rita Andersen and moved to the States but almost immediately returned
home again due to the call of the fast-growing Rastafarian faith.
Reggae star
In 1972 Marley finally had the possibility and the budget to release his first
professional album, “Catch a Fire”, which introduced reggae to the world. Fuelled
by Rastafarianism he became reggae’s master and his songs of justice and rebellion
found fans in almost every country. 1975 was the year of “Natty Dread”, featuring,
among others, the classic-to-be “No Woman, No Cry”.
The end
On a 1977 European tour, Marley and his band played an informal soccer game
with a group of French journalists during which Marley hurt his leg. While he was in
hospital, doctors found he had cancer. Despite his condition, though, Marley still
toured extensively and recorded new songs. In 1980, while jogging in New York’s
Central Park, he suddenly collapsed. It transpired that the cancer had spread and Marley died eight months later. Upon his death the world had lost a great musician as
well as an ambassador of truth and justice.

“THE CRANBERRIES”
Formed in 1989 in Limerick in Ireland, “The Cranberries” were originally
called “The Cranberry Saw Us”. At that time, the line-up consisted of Noel Hogan
on guitars, Mike Hogan on bass, and Fergal Lawler on drums, and vocalist Niall
Quinn. However, after a year Niall decided to leave the group and they started to
audition for a new vocalist, and this is how they met Dolores O’Riordan, whose characteristic vocal style was to change the group’s sound entirely.
Their records
“The Cranberries” first started to record in 1991, and two years later released
their debut album, “Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We”. At first the
group was ignored, but then they began to tour the US, and their American audiences
were captivated by O’Riordan’s voice. Due to their new American success their next
album, 1994’s “No Need To Argue”, which included the single “Zombie”, was
warmly received by the UK media and “The Cranberries” became one of the most
popular groups in Britain and Ireland.
To The Faithful Departed
Although the group’s future seemed assured, some people claimed that the
group’s newfound fame was only due to O’Riordan’s incredible voice, and there were
rumors that she was planning to launch a solo career. However, these soon disappeared when their 1996 album, “To The Faithful Departed”, appeared. Alongside
strong, often politically oriented lyrics, the music itself (as opposed to just
O’Riordan’s vocals) was a lot more powerful. The group’s fortunes continue to go
from strength to strength with albums “Bury The Hatchet” and “Wake Up And Smell
The Coffee” and they still play to packed concerts whenever they perform.

“THE BEATLES”
“The Beatles” were the most famous pop group of the 1960s. Their music was
not only popular in Britain, but all over the world. Members of the band were John
Lennon, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and Paul McCartney. They were workingclass boys from Liverpool. Some well-known songs by “The Beatles” are “Yesterday”, “Strawberry Fields Forever”, “Lucy in the Sky of Diamonds” and “Michelle
Ma Belle”.
They are also starred in two films: “A Hard Day’s Night” in 1964 and “Help!”
in 1965.
Paul McCartney who used to sing and play bass for “The Beatles”, established his own group called “Wings”, which played for ten years. In 1991 he also
wrote his first piece of classical music called “The Liverpool Oratorio”. Paul’s
daughter Stella is a top British fashion designer.
John Lennon learnt to play harmonica at the age of 12 but he wanted to be a
millionaire not a musician. He met Paul McCartney in 1955 and they started “The
Beatles” in 1960.
John Lennon was shot in New York outside his own house on December 8,
