Improvements in and relating to Shaft Packings.
We, INTEIRNATIONAL GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY I Nc ORPORATED, of 120,
Broadway, New York, United States of America, Merchants, a Corporation
organised under the laws of the State of New York, United States of
America, (Assignees of ALLG Em EINE ELEKTRICITXTSGESELLSCHAFT, of
Friedrich Karl I Ufer 2-4, Berlin, N W, Germany, a German Company), do
hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the
same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained
in and hby the following statement:
Self-lubricating kneaded packing masses, which consist of paste made
of finely ground powder, are known as packing material for stuffing
boxes These packing materials have the drawback that they can work out
of the stuffing box during operation.
For avoiding these drawbacks it has been proposed to provide, besides
the selflubricating components, such as graphite , X fat, oil, etc, a
further carrier of carbon or graphite products which is likewise
self-lubricating The packing is surrounded tby a base or closing ring
which is not lubricated but entirely dry to and provided with a
bevelled joint In this construction the packing is not suitable for
stuffing boxes which have to shut off steam or hot water , since the
base or closing rings become hard and breakable f due to the heat, and
the paste comes out of the stuffing box which thus becomes unpacked.
According to the present invention, these drawbacks are overcome by
arranging two or more packings consisting of kneadable paste eoach
between two labyrinth packing rings (for example of metal ) closely
surrounding the shaft By the term " labyrinth ring " as used in this
specification is to be understood a ring having labyrinth grooves on
its inner periphery.
Such a stuffing box composed of kneadable paste and labyrinth rings
can be used in the same manner for rotating shafts as well as shafts
having a reciprocating movement and is suitable for the packing in the
case of gases, air, steam, lPrice 11-l hot and cold water , etc up to
the highest pressures and temperatures 55 A constructional example of
the
invention
is
represented in the accompanying drawing in
longitudinal section. a indicates a casing part of the space b to be
packed off, c is a threaded bush 60 which is pressed against the
packing surface e on the casing a by means of a nut d held in the
casing a The bush c which is provided with labyrinth-like grooves
towards the space b serves for receiving 65 the packings h, i and the
labyrinth-like packings /, g to tbe arranged alternately.
The packings h, i are suitably pressed into a solid packing ring
before being put in 70 The packing composed in this manner can be
compressed inside the bush c by means of a cap-nut k If the stuffing
box is to serve for shutting off high pressure, then in the labyrinth
ring f, in the bush 7 c and in the casing a, appropriate discharge
points 1 will be provided for the medium to be packed which may have
penetrated through the packing rings h, / These points may serve for
the supply 80 of cooling water if the packing is to tbe used for gases
or vapours of high temperatures m is a wedge which prevents a turning
of the packing rings in the bush when the shafts are rotating.
Having now particuarly described and 85 ascertained the nature of our
said invention and in what manner the same is to be

performed, we declare that what we claim is: 90
1 A stuffing-box packing comprising two or more packings of kneadable
paste arranged each between two labyrinth packing rings (for example
of metal ) closely surrounding the shaft 95
2 A packing according to Claim 1, in which the kneaded paste to be
arranged between the labyrinth rings is compressed into a solid
packing ring.
3 A stuffing-box packing arranged and 100 constructed substantially as
described with reference to the accompanying draw ing. Dated this 25th
