The
hardening
of centrifugally cast tubes is eliminated by embedding
the tube, after extraction from the mould and while still glowing, in
a mixture of finely distributed zinc and iron , which materials may be
heated to a temperature below their melting points and below that of
the cast tube.

and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly
described and ascertained in and by the following statement:This invention relates to a method for the elimination
hardening chilling effect in centrifugally casting tubes.

On being cast in iron moulds, certain metals , particularly cast- iron
, are considerably chilled and thus acquire a hard surface and to
avoid this it has hitherto been proposed to coat a mould, W hich may
be a permanent mould with a volatilisable metal such as zinc .
According to the invention, hardening of centrifugally cast tubes is
eliminated by treating the tubes while in a heated condition either
during or immediately after casting with finely distributed zinc mixed
with iron The treating substances may be applied in the formu of
pastes, powders, and loose mixtures.
When applying substances which prevent hardening during casting it is
advisable to coat the mould with a paste or composition containing
them, or to introduce them in pulverised condition directly into the
mould and to distribute them uniformly over the wall of the mould by
centrifugal force due to a rapid rotation of the mould.
If extracted and still glowing tubes are to be treated with such
substances, suitable receptacles are preferably employed, which are
filled with these substances and which are of such a size that the
tubes may be embedded therein or can be covered at least without great
expenditure of labour To increase their efficacy the substances are
preferably heated to certain temperatures which lie below the melting
point of the mentioned substances and the Casting material It is
essential that the extracted tubes are not cooled too rapidly in the
zinc and iron powder.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my
said invention, and in what manner the same is, to

1 be performed, I declare that what I claim is:1 A method for the
elimination of the hardening chilling effect in centrifugally casting
tubes
in chills , characterised in that the tubes during or
immediately 69 after the casting are treated with finely distributed
zinc and iron .
2 A method according to claim 1, characterised in that the chill
before the casting of the tube is coated with a paste 65 or
composition containing the substances mentioned.
3 A method according to claim 1, characterised in that the substances
mentioned are introduced into the chill 70 before the casting step.
4 A method according to claim 1, characterised in that the cast titbe
after extraction from the chill is embedded while still hot in
substances of the kind 75 mentioned.
5 A method according to claim 4, characterised in that the substances
before embedding the tube are heated.
6 Centrifugally cast tubes that are not 80 hard land produced in
