Abstract
_________________________________________________________________
Amines and aldehydes are condensed in the presence of an anhydride of
a polybasic acid .
In examples (1) aniline and magnesium chloride are added to a solution
of phthalic anhydride in alcohol .
The quantity of formaldehyde

(2) An anhydrous aldehyde such as formaldehyde in a polymeric form,
acetic aldehyde , paraldehyde , crotonaldehyde or furfurol or mixtures
thereof is added to a solution of phthalic anhydride in aniline
containing a contact substance.
Specification 388,097 is referred to.

We, INTERNATIONAL GENERAL EL Ec TRIC COMPANY, INCORPORATED, of 120,

America
(Assignees

do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the
same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained
in and by the following statement:According to our Patent Application No 14,430 of 1931, (Serial No
388,030), a condensation product is obtained by the action of an
aldehyde upon an amine in solution in the presence of a polybasic
organic acid In the process therein described the reaction between the
aldehyde and the amine takes place violently and is accompanied by an
appreciable temperature rise of the reaction liquid.
It has now been found that 'by using, according to our present
invention, anhydrides of polybasic organic acids , the reaction takes
place more more slowly without great heating and under conditions that
can be controlled with much greater facility If, as described in our
Patent Application No 25,209 of 1931, (Serial No 388,097), the - amine
itself is employed as the solvent, thereby withholding all water
admixtures from the reaction process, the anhydride will not only have
a catalytic action but will at the same time also absorb the water
produced whilst forming the corresponding. acid The acid produced can
easily be removed from the finished resinous product by washing As in
the case of the resin obtained according ta our Patent application No
14,430 of 1931, (Serial Redhill: Printed for Hls Majesty's Stationery
lPrice 11-l a C us-Q 3 I No 388,030), therefore, the resin can be 4
dissolved in solvents and may be employed as a varnish or binding
medium and may subsequently be converted to the final state.
EXAMPLE 1. gr of phthalic acid anhydride are dissolved in 200 gr of
alcohol To this solution are added 100 gr of aniline and a small
quantity of a contact substance such as magnesium ehloride The
quantity of formaldehyde required for forming the resin will be
determined by the nature of the resin to be produced, if for example,
it is desired to obtain a resin which can be pressed, 2-3 molecules
will be required (in the form of a 30 percent solution).
EXAMPLE 2. gr of phthalic acid anhydride are dissolved in 100 gr of
aniline After the addition of a small quantity of a contact substance,
an auhydrous aldehyde such as formaldehyde in a polymeric form, acetic
aldehyde , paraldehyde , crotonaldehyde or furfurol is added; these
may of course be added in a pure state or mixed with one another.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our
said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, we
declare that what we
