[Class 80 (i).] In a method of making a hardened gear wheel composed
of
several
parts, such as a twopart gear 1 for use in an
electrically-driven vehicle, the teeth are first formed in the
undivided blank, which is subjected to cementation and hardened and is
then provided with registering-means for relative location of the
parts of the wheel, the wheel being finally severed at the joint.
The joint is preferably made along two arms 2 of the wheel which have
hollow spaces 4 and the plane of the joint extends through opposite
tooth gaps.
The teeth are cut in the rough blank which is then subjected to
cementation and on subsequent turning of the wheel body the carbonized
material is removed so that, after hardening, holes 5, 6 may be
drilled along the line of the proposed joint.
The holes are accurately fitted with pins.

COMPLETE SPECIFICATION. or relating to Methods or Manufacturing
Hardened Composed of Several Parts and to the Gear Wheels Method.
We, MAAG-Z An NRI Dn ER and MASCHINEN A.G, a Joint Stock Company,
incorporated under the Laws of Switzerland, of Hardstrasse 219,
Zurich, -Switzerland, do hereby declare the nature of this invention
and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly
described and ascertained in and by the following statement:This invention relates to methods of manufacturing hardened gear
wheels composed of several parts and to the gear wheels made by the
method.
When a gear wheel composed of several parts which were severed at the
jointing portions before the hardening, for example a bipartite gear
wheel of the type as frequently used for electrically driven vehicles,
is hardened, detrimental distortions ensue during to the heating of
the material At the joints of the toothed portions, these distortions
are particularly deleterious, as in -consequence thereof considerable
inequalities of division between the teeth accrue The object of the
present invention is to provide a method of manufacturing gear wheels
composed of several parts by means of which deformations of the wheel
particularly at the joints thereof are obviated According to the
invention, this result is obtained by the steps of forming the gear
teeth in the wheel in the unsevered state thereof, subjecting the
wheel to cementation, hardening the wheel, providing at the jointing
portions seats for register adjusting means exactly defining the
relative disposition-of the parts of the wheel and subsequently
severing the wheel at the jointing portions.
A gear wheel manufactured by this method is advantageously provided at
the jointing portions with seats into which corresponding register
adjusting means are inserted which permit of exactly assembling the
parts of the wheel with each other.
In the accompanying drawing a gear wheel manufactured by the method
according to this invention is illustrated lPrice 11-Jie:4 S d by way
of example only, in which Fig 1 shows an elevation of a bipartite
wheel manufactured according to the invention, and Fig 2 a plan view
of the lower part of the wheel as seen from the joint.
The integral body 1 of the wheel is provided with four arms 2, 3 At
two of these arms, for example at the arms-2, the wheel is intended to
be jointed To this end the plane through these arms is situated in the
middle of the gap between two teeth For facilitating the severing of
the wheel, the arms 2 are provided with inner hollow spaces 4 It is
essential that the two halves of the wheel can be assembled after the
severing in exactly the same relative disposition the parts assumed
before For this purpose at the joints register adjusting means in the
form of exactly fitting cylindrical pins 5 are arranged in bores,
whereas other pins 6, aside from assisting in exactly assembling the
parts, serve also for transmitting the thrust exerted by screw bolts 7
after the tightening of the nuts 8.
The manufacture of the gear wheel is so carried out that the integral
crude wheel body 1 is at first turned to a pre 80 liminary shape and
thereafter the teeth. are cut' in the wheel rim Afterwards the teeth
are subjected to a suitable, cementation process, whereby obviously
also the adjacent portions of the wheel 85 are enriched with carbon On
the subsequent turning of the wheel to definite shape, the layers of
material which have been carburised are removed again so that after
the hardening of the wheel the holes 90 to serve as seats for the pins
5, 6 can be drilled at the joints and the bore of the nave lapped
After the performance of these working operations, the body of the
wheel is severed in the middle plane of 95 the arms 2 by milling or
sawing and then the holes for the reception of the screw bolts 7 are
bored in each half of the wheel On assembling the parts of the wheel,
the cylindrical pins 5, 6 assure a 1 i O precise positioning of the
parts and the gear teeth may yet be lapped to the accurate shape, if
desired.
Instead of using pins for relatively adjusting the two halves during
assembling the wheel other register adjusting means may be resorted to
and inserted in corresponding seats provided for the same at the
joints of the wheel In any case it is essential that only after the
hardening the register adjusting means are exactly fitted to their
seats and subsequently the wheel separated into parts.
Instead of removing after the cementation the superficial film of
carburised wheel material at the -portions to be jointed previous to
the
hardening, these portions may be covered with a suitable
substance, for protecting the same during the cementation againstcarbon penetrating thereto, so that cementation is impeded thereat and
these portions remain soft during the subsequent hardening.

our said invention and in what manner the same is to he performed, we

portions to be jointed are protected against being carburised previous
to the cementation.
3 A method as claimed in claim 1, 45 characterised by the fact that
the film of carburised wheel material is removed at the portions to be
jointed after the cementation.
4 A gear wheel composed of several 50 parts manufactured by the method
as claimed in claim 1, characterised by the fact that the wheel is
provided at the portions to be jointed with seats which receive
register adjusting means permitting 55 the parts of the wheel to be
