MICROSCOPY RESEARCH AND TECHNIQUE 33:295 (1996)
Introduction
I am very grateful to the authors of the articles contained in “The Anterior Segment of the Eye.” Each of
them is under the unrelenting pressure of competing
for federal grant support. Given these pressures, it was
understandable that to obtain comprehensive articles
consistent with the goals of the journal has taken a
long time, indeed years. We hope that the reader will
enjoy the fruits of the labor and that this collection will
serve as a useful resource for students and researchers
alike. “The Anterior Segment of the Eye” is particularly timely since, a t present, there is no English text
on ocular anatomy in print that contains more than a
couple representative electron micrographs.
None of these articles would have been possible without the ongoing support of the authors’ individual research programs by The National Eye Institute and
other divisions of The National Institutes of Health.

Projects such as this, although not an integral part of
the funded research program of any investigator, or of
the NEI, are nonetheless direct products of federal research support. For this reason, all authors have acknowledged their NIH support in these articles, where
appropriate.
In closing, I would again like to thank all of the
investigators involved in this project for their efforts
and Editor-in-Chief Dr. John E. Johnson, Jr. for his
unlimited patience in awaiting completion of these
manuscripts.
