DEVELOPMENTAL DYNAMICS 212:170 (1998)
EDITORIAL
One of the major scientific challenges of our time is the
systematic identification of all the genes which control
the development and function of multi-cellular organisms. Various methodological approaches such as saturation mutagenesis or sequencing of whole genomes
have been undertaken to reach this goal. For mammalian development the gene trap approach in mouse
embryonic stem (ES) cells is considered a promising
alternative. It is for this reason that Developmental
Dynamics has assembled a Special Issue on the state of
the art in this area of research. Manuscripts were
submitted as regular papers, peer-reviewed, and pub-
r 1998 WILEY-LISS, INC.
lished together, with the agreement of the authors.
Special thanks are due to Martin Evans for providing
his Preface to the issue, which is at the same time a
comprehensive introduction to the field. Also, the editorial staff on both sides of the Atlantic are acknowledged
for their efforts in getting everything through all the
procedures.
