New York City is the largest city in the USA. It is located on the
Atlantic coast in southeastern part of the State of New York.
The city was founded in 1624 by the Dutch colonist, and was
called New Amsterdam. In 1664, the British captured the city
and renamed it New York in honor of the initiator of capture –
the Duck of York.
The city consist of five
boroughs: the Bronx, Brooklyn,
Queens, Manhattan and Staten
Island. The city area is 1214.9
km2 . The population of New York
is over 8.4 million people.
New York, along with London
and Tokyo, is one of the three
main centers of the world
economy.
There are many other places of interest in New York: Central
Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Centre, the shopping districts
and the United Nations Building. In Manhattan, at Broadway,
there is Columbia University, one of the biggest universities of
the USA.
The Statue of Liberty is situated on the
Liberty Island. The full name of statue is
“Liberty Enlightening the World” and it
was presented to the USA by Frenchmen
on 28 October 1886. The statue
symbolizes freedom and democracy of
American nation.
It has seven rays on it, which
symbolize seven continents and seven
seas
Manhattan Island – the central part of New York – was
bought from the local Indians by the Dutch for 24 dollars.
That was the most profitable commercial deal in the US
history. Today Manhattan is the heart of business and
commercial life of the country.
Fifth Avenue is one of the major
avenues in the center of the borough
of Manhattan in New York.
At Museum Mile one can visit a
well-known Metropolitan Museum of
Art, see the rich Frick Collection and
the constructivist building designed
by Frank Lloyd Wright, that is
Guggenheim Museum.
The Rockefeller Center is a
large office center in New York,
built in the 1930s. It was named
in honor of John Davison
Rockefeller Jr.. The most
famous are 14 high-rise
buildings decorated in Art Deco
style.
It has been the National
Historical Monument of the
United States since 1987.
Times Square is an area in central Manhattan in New York
City.
Times Square is attracting about 50 million visitors annually.
The area is called the "crossroads of the world", it daily passes
through itself more than 300 thousand pedestrians and 115
thousand drivers and passengers, it employs 170 thousand
people. Times Square is a symbol of New York.
The Empire State Building is
the tallest building in New York.
It is 443 meters high and has 103
floors. It was built in 1930.
The Empire State Building is
one of the largest office spaces in
the world. It has 73 super fast
lifts. The fastest of these travel
from the ground to the 80th floor
in 45 seconds!
Central Park in New York is one of the largest in the US and the
most famous in the world. The park is located on Manhattan Island
and is rectangular in shape. The length of the park is about 4
kilometers, width is about 800 meters.



