DOCTOR WHO REVISITED
HELL BENT
It?s time to look back at the final
episode of Series 9 of Doctor Who
and what a finale it was...
This episode begins in the Nevada desert as
the Doctor enters a diner and tells a waitress
who seems identical to Clara, a story. We
then ?ash back to Gallifrey where the
Doctor having escaped from his Confession
Dial, overthrows the President. He then uses
an extraction chamber to remove Clara
from her timeline just a split second before
her death. The Time Lords tell the Doctor
this can only be allowed for a short period,
but he and Clara escape into the Cloisters.
They steal a new TARDIS and escape. The
Doctor hopes to avoid sending Clara back
to the moment of her death, even though
this could damage the fabric of time. He
then travels to the very end of time and in
the ruins of Gallifrey, minutes before the end
of everything, he meets Ashildr.
To make it more dif?cult for the Time Lords to ?nd Clara, the
Doctor wants to erase her memories of him. She says it is
unfair and wants to erase his memories of her. They decide
to use the device together and trust to luck as to which one
will be affected. The Doctor awakens in the desert with no
idea who Clara is. He manages to put together who she is
but doesn?t recognise her as the waitress in the diner. Clara
is now ageless and decides to head back to Gallifrey to be
inserted back into her timeline, but she wants to take the
long way round and departs with Ashildr. The Doctor?s and
Clara?s Tardises pass each other in the time stream as they
set off on different journeys.

And so I continue with the impossible task
of trying to educate you human imbeciles by
introducing you to some of the other life-forms
in the universe, whose names begin with a sound
similar to your Earth letter ?J?. Pay attention as
I showcase some of the strangest beings ever
encountered this side of the Seventeenth Parallel.
JACONDANS
These humanoid creatures come from the planet
Jaconda. With their long beak-like noses, greyblue skin, horns and feathers, they are like a
cross between birds, humans and deer. Unlike
Sontarans but very like you humans, they can
be mind controlled and at one time they came
under the control of a Gastropod, a slug-like
creature, who the 6th Doctor defeated. A
ridiculous race who may have feathers, but
can?t even ?y. If we Sontarans grew feathers
and could not ?y, we would pluck them out and
use them to stuff pillows. But that is because we
are practical and intelligent.

Described by the 4th Doctor as a vicious, callous, war-like race, the
Jagaroth certainly sound like my kind of people. Alas, I will never know
what they are really like as the whole race have become extinct. A
?ne looking race, they could disguise themselves as humans and were
considered highly intelligent. Although I think if they were so clever they
would still exist, so that can?t be true, can it?

JAGRAFESS
The Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe
has a surprisingly long name for a creature that usually only
talks in growls and screeches. It has a lifespan of thousands of
years and incredibly sharp teeth. It needs cold air to survive
and in hot temperatures is likely to explode, which given its
size, can lead to a terrible mess that is impossible to clean.

clever, the Judoon have small brains and
yellow blood. They have also been trained to
use virtually any type of transport, although
they are not great at driving cars.

Yes.

ASSASSIN ON THE RAILROADS
FROM THE JOURNAL OF JENNY FLINT
My adventures with Madame Vastra have introduced
me to all sorts of incredible people. Who knew that a
girl like me could go from a childhood slaving away in
a match factory to a life meeting warriors from outer
space, royalty from centuries past, and a Lord of Time
itself? One ?gure who did nothing but disappoint, though,
was the Prime Minister of Great Britain. All through our
journey, all he did was whinge. Then again, someone was
trying to kill him.
Let me explain ? one week before, the Prime Minister
had come to visit us in our house at Paternoster Row,
having heard of Vastra?s accomplishments as London?s
Great Detective. It was troubling times for Europe.
Germany and France were bitter enemies, and Britain had
few friends on the continent, either.
?So you want us to obliterate this species known as the
French?? Strax asked.
?No, no, no,? objected the Prime Minister, ?I am due to
travel to Geneva to meet with my fellow European leaders
and ?nd a way to resolve matters peacefully. But there has
been an attempt to kill me recently, and I fear there may
be another. I need you to catch the villain and protect me
at all costs.?
And so the Paternoster Gang was on the case of the
Prime Minister?s would-be assassin. The trail left by the
killer?s earlier attempt was cold ? the politician had been
attacked in his own country house, but not a single clue
had been dropped, and no one had heard anything except
the bats in the attic. So we joined him on the train across

Europe, ready to defend against any further threat.
Strax was particularly prepared ? ?I?ve laid acid bombs
and cryo-mines in all the carriages, and set up plasma
turrets on the hull,? he said upon returning to our cabin.
?This train vehicle is now more heavily armed than a
Sontaran Dread-Cruiser!?
?That, uh, that doesn?t sound very safe,? muttered our
client, nervously stroking his bushy beard.
?Quite correct, Prime Minister,? replied Vastra, ?there
are hundreds of passengers on this train who could
accidentally step on those explosives. Strax, go and bring
them all back.?
Strax mumbled something rude under his breath as
he slouched out of the cabin. Unfortunately for our
Sontaran friend, dinner was served while he was gone. An
incredible feast was brought to the cabin by a handsome
young porter with piercing blue eyes ? as Vastra?s maid,
the serving of food is usually my job, so it was an odd
feeling to have someone else bring me dinner. I wasn?t the
most uncomfortable, though, as the Prime Minister was
clearly on edge, and allowed himself a large glass of wine
to calm his nerves. Being a sensible sort, I stuck to water.
This turned out to be a very wise decision. Just as Strax
returned with a bundle of deactivated explosives under his
arm, the Prime Minister started coughing and spluttering
like an old chimney sweep.
?What?s wrong with him?? I asked.
?The wine must have been poisoned!? realised Vastra,
?We must find that porter. Strax, the Prime Minister
requires first aid.?
13/02/2017 17:32
?Oh, you want my help now, do you?? said Strax.
?Fine, I?ll nurse the old lady.?
As Strax got to work on the spluttering politician,
Vastra and I sprinted out of the cabin and down the
train. A couple of carriages down, we caught sight of
the porter who?d served our food. When the young
man saw us approaching, he ran to the end of the busy
carriage, knocking two elderly passengers out of his way.
I apologised for the disturbance as we too rushed past the
confused couple.
Our chase reached the rear carriage ? the assassin
had nowhere to run. But, looking back at us with
determination on his face, he smashed through the
carriage?s outside door, opening us up to the winds
outside. He showed surprising agility as he pulled
himself through the door and up ? onto the roof of the
train!
But he was not the only one with such talents, as
Madame Vastra and myself followed the assassin onto
the roof. It was dif?cult to balance, as the carriage was
travelling at quite some speed, and the sight of the
French countryside hurtling past would make many
people sick with fright. Pulling our swords, we edged
towards the villain.
?Surrender now and we won?t hurt you,? offered
Vastra. But he revealed a blade of his own and swung it
at her.
?Very well,? Vastra hissed as we fought back. It was one
of the most perilous ?ghts I?d ever been in, as the sound
of our swords crashing into each other could barely be
heard against the battering wind and the train wheels
rolling along the tracks underneath. The man was a
skilled swordsman, but in the end no match for the two
of us. His sword ?ew from his grasp and off into the
snowy ?elds below. He lost his balance and fell to his
back, dangerously close to the rear edge of the train. We
had him beat.
?Who do you work for?? demanded Vastra. ?Germany?
Russia?? The man?s face lit up with a sinister grin that
said it was neither of these and that there was a whole
other layer to this conspiracy which we had not yet
discovered. And then he jumped off the train.
?Good ?eavens!? I exclaimed as I peered to see where
the man had fell ? surely at this speed, he must have met
his fate. But there was no body to be seen in the ?elds
below. And then, as quickly as the man had fallen, a
hideous creature ?ew up into the air and landed on the
train roof behind us. It had the wings of an enormous
bat, talons as sharp as swords, a stuck-up snout like a
pig?s, and the sharp blue eyes of the assassin porter.
?I work for the Troxil Gamesmasters!? the creature
snarled, in a grainy, unnerving voice.
?And who?s that when they?re at home?? I asked, trying
to keep my fear of this monstrous alien under control.
31-33 PATERNOSTER GANG issue 22.indd 32
?Of course?? exclaimed Vastra. ?The Troxil are
a manipulative race of shapeshifters who gain great
pleasure from setting off wars within primitive species
and gambling on the outcomes.?
?Who are you calling primitive?? I asked. But we had
no time to argue, as the Troxil was advancing towards
us, its leathery skin unbreakable and its claws easily able
to take on our swords. We fought to defend ourselves,
but this time it was the assassin who was clearly set to
win the battle, pushing us back closer and closer to the
end of the carriage. Luckily, I had a plan. I reached into
my pocket, pulled out an object and threw it to the ?oor
between us and the Troxil.
With a mighty ?ash of light, the Troxil stopped in its
tracks. It was frozen, unable to move. Madame Vastra
didn?t realise what had happened, until she saw the
Sontaran cryo-mine at the creature?s feet.
?I stashed that away earlier when Strax wasn?t
looking,? I explained, ?thought it might come in useful.?
?Oh, Jenny, what would I do without you?? Vastra
said, grinning.
After a little ?ddling with the helpless alien?s
teleport bracelet, Vastra sent him straight back to his
employers, along with a message never to mess
with Earth again. But there was one thing
we weren?t sure about ? had the assassin
succeeded in his mission?
Thankfully not. Upon our return to
the cabin, we found the Prime Minister
alive and well, washing down his worry,
as politicians seem fond of doing, with
another glass of wine.
?The assassin has been dealt with,?
announced Vastra, wisely deciding not to
tell him the assassin was a giant alien
bat. ?You?re safe, sir, and no one will
ever know about this incident.?
?Very good, very good,? said the
Prime Minister. ?But please, what I
really don?t want my colleagues
knowing about,? he added,
glancing at Strax, ?is how I was
given mouth-to-mouth by this
potato creature.?
