of processes, the new patent law no longer forbids the patenting of substances prepared chemically or of foods and drugs.
This is a considerable reversal of German patent procedure,
introduced in cooperation with neighboring European countries in order t o ease agreement on uniform European patent
rights.
The chapters on “Pure Air Conservation”, “Waste Water”,
and “Waste Disposal” treat serious problems that are not
the chemist’s first love but can no longer be side-stepped since
industrial production interferes increasingly with the maintenance of equilibria in nature. Methods for study and control
of air and limitation of its pollution have developed into an
exact science. Sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide stand at
the head of the list of impurities. 5.4 million tons of the former are emitted annually in England alone. Emission of COz
is not considered in the present chapter since it is not generally considered an impurity; yet at present 14 billion tons of
COz are produced annually by combustion, a quantity that
suffices to increase the CO2 content of the atmosphere by
about 10 % in 15-20 years; such disturbances already exert
a permanent effect o n climate and vegetation and, if uncontrolled, will lead to catastrophies. The need to conserve also
water is shown by the figures for water consumption and
waste water given in the chapter on “Waste Water”. In respect of solid waste it is noteworthy that not only is the
amount per head increasing (at present 0.7 kg per person per
day in the Federal Republic of Germany, but also that its
calorific value increases annually by 70-80 kcal ‘kg.
Among the social tasks discussed in this book must be included safety at work and industrial toxicology. From the
statistics of accidents in chemical industry one can see that
only 10-12 % of all accidents have a specific “chemical”
cause; most accidents occur during “transport and manual
activity”. The chapter on “Industrial Toxicology” is written
by H . Oettel who wrote the alphabetized articles on special
toxicological subjects in the complete encyclopedia and now
provides a summarizing survey of this field. He shows, inter
alia, that there is a list of notifiable “recognized occupational
diseases” which the public has more or less come to accept.
The statistics of the 15 diseases that were most commonly
notified and compensated amounted during 1952 and 1953
to 464000 cases, of which 25 % were compensated. Apparently 3/4 of the notifications were not accepted as occupational diseases.
In its choice of subjects this book not only provides a valuable extension of the Encyclopedia but also fills a gap in the
literature of industrial chemistry. Happily, all the articles are
written for the layman and not for the specialist. This volume
therefore is a valuable contribution to the mutual understanding between those in various modern types of work.

The rapid development of organic chemistry and biochemistry in recent years was made possible only by the introduction of new methods and their improvement. Particularly
important among these methods is the use of compounds
labeled with isotopes. To make use of the isotope technique,
however. it is necessary to determine the distribution of the
isotope over the various positions of the molecule in the
reaction product as accurately as possible. The authors of
this book have collected the experimental data that were
formerly scattered throughout the literature, and which were
sometimes difficult t o find, and have presented them clearly
and critically.

The book deals mainly with chemical and enzymatic degradation reactions for the location of hydrogen and carbon
isotopes, while the reader is referred t o reviews for oxygen,
sulfur, and phosphorus isotopes.
After a survey of the principles of degradation processes,
some general reactions (Kuhn-Roth reaction, iodoform reaction, erc.) and the manipulation of the most important
fragments (COz, HCOOH, etc.) formed in degradation
reactions are described. The next nine chapters describe the
best degradation processes for carboxylic acids, aliphatic
hydrocarbons, alcohols and amines, aldehydes and ketones,
carbohydrates, aromatic compounds, cycloaliphatic compounds, heterocycles, and several groups of natural products
from plants and microorganisms. Special attention is given
to the difficulties, sources of error, and problems of degradation reactions. The book thus offers a very useful collection
of carefully checked procedures. The use of the book is
facilitated by rigid classification and a formula index arranged according to the empirical formula, which also lists
the parts of the molecules that can be isolated.
The author’s intention “to fill a particularly serious gap in
the literature on isotope methods” has been fully realized,
and it is therefore with great interest that we look forward
to the second (Isotope Effects) and third (Analysis) volumes
of the present series.

This volume has long been a recognized textbook providing
the chemistry student with a first glimpse of the field of
macromolecular chemistry. It is therefore with pleasure that
we greet this new edition, which is practically the same size
as the first edition, but in which certain chapters are presented more clearly and go into greater detail, and which
also takes into account more recent results (e.g. thermal polymerization of styrene, copolymerization, average molecular
weight). It should be mentioned in particular that the chapter
on anionic polymerization now contains a section on polymerization by electron transfer. A section on polymerization with complex catalysts has also been added
under the title “Coordination Polymerization”, as well as
one on cyclopolymerization. A new chapter, “Structure
and Properties”, briefly explains the concepts of structure and
texture and deals in particular with elementary considerations
on the coil density of the macromolecule in solution. The
author adheres to current nomenclature throughout the new
edition. It is to be hoped that the second edition will be as

well received as the first.

The “Anorganikum”, which now takes its place alongside
the “Organikum”, again carries the names of a collection of
authors and, according to notes on the cover, is intended to
present in one book the principles of physical chemistry as
well as preparative and analytical inorganic chemistry.
