The ammonoxidation of olefins, particularly isobutylene, to
form j3-olefinic nitriles (methacrylonitrile) is carried out in
the presence of a catalyst whose active component consists
of 1-15 wt.% of Moo3, 25-50 wt.% of FeZ03,and 45-70
wt.% of T e 0 3 , and which is applied to a support such as
kaolin, alumina, kieselgur, or silica. The reaction is carried
out at 300--6OO‘C (preferably at 350-5OO’C) in the presence
of a static-bed catalyst or in a fluidized bed. The contact
time with the catalyst is 0.5-15s; the yields are satisfactory.

The selective isornerization of long-chain 1-olefins ( I ) to 2-olefins is carried out by bringing the 1-olefin into contact with
a calcium metal/aluminosilicate/molecular sieve catalyst
coated with a monoatomic layer of sodium. The temperature
should be between the freezing point of the 1-olefin and 150”C.
About 70% (or more) of the 1-olefins can be isomerized
in @

min e.g. at room temperature and at atmospheric

This second volume of the series presents a survey of the
publications that appeared in 1970 in important areas of
electrochemistry. The remarkable intensity of electrochemical
reseach can be seen from the size of the book (despite a
concise treatment of the individual facts) and from the 700
literature references from 1970 alone. Competent commentators deal with the synthetic aspects of organic electrochemistry
(focal points: nucleophilic substitutions on aromatic compounds and olefins, reductive coupling and bond fissure, stereospecific electrode reactions), investigations on salt melts,
and reactions at solid metal electrodes, as well as with the
further investigation of the double layers at the phase boundaries between electrode and electrolyte. Recent developments
in ion-specific membranes are presented in another chapter.
The presentation of the book and the printing, which is surprisingly careful in view of the quick publication are excellent.
If the tempo and the quality can be maintained, the later
volumes will be welcomed by grateful readers who wish
to keep abreast of the general situation in electrochemistry.

Phosphorus occupies a central position In both the animate
and the inanimate worlds. The uses of phosphorus compounds
in many areas of research and of life are correspondingly
numerous. An essential condition for the development of phosphorus chemistry was the availability of efficient analytical
Until now, the original publications and analytical findings
have been scattered chaotically in the chemical literature. Workersin the phosphorus field will therefore welcome this compilation of the most important methods of separation, identification, and determination by a team of outstanding experts
under the leadership of M . Halmann. Both the classical “wet
methods”and the possibilities of modern spectroscopic techniques are discussed clearly and with reference to the literature.
However, the specialist will be disappointed by the occasional
repetitions and by the omission of practical hints and methods
that have proved to be essential in the laboratory. It should
be possible to eliminate these gaps in the second edition
without upsetting the excellent arrangement of the book.
As a n unselfish assistant to the advancing chemist, analysis
has repeatedly paved the way for new knowledge. The publication of this monograph will therefore please workers in the
phosphorus field.

The present book has resulted from the copying of seminar
lectures during the author’s visiting professorship at the University of Uppsala.
It deals in great detail with the thermodynamics of ideal
and non-ideal solutions and of chemical equilibrium under
the influence of high gravitational accelerations. The various
ways of taking the average of the molecular weights for polydisperse systems are also discussed. In the Appendix the reader
finds an introduction to the theory of ultracentrifugation,
and several solutions of the Lamm differential equation are
discussed. The influence of polydispersity on the boundary
layer in sedimentation velocity experiments is then dealt with.
The book contains evaluations and interpretations of experimental data on the molecular weights and sedimentation coefficients of synthetic macromolecules (polystyrene, dextran) and
of natural macromolecules (P-lactoglobulin B, lysozyme, chromatrypsinogen A). The section on self-association in protein
solutions can be strongly recommended.
There is unfortunately nothing in the book about the theory
and possible applications of isopyknic ultracentrifugation as
an equilibrium method, or about the band separation technique for sedimentation velocity experiments with the associated advantages (no Johnson-Ogston effect). Experimental
details such as the various optical systems and the evaluation
formulas are also omitted.
On the whole the book is of interest only to the analytical
investigator, since there is no mention anywhere of modern
techniques of preparative ultracentrifugation.
