BOOK REVIEWS Enzyme-Gewinnung-Analyse-Regulation (Enzymes: Isolation, Analysis and Control). By A. Betz. Verlag Chemie GmbH, Weinheim 1974. 1st edit., XII, 197 pp., 64 figs., 7 tables, bound, D M 28.80. German textbooks on enzymes were hitherto a rarity in the bookshops, so the appearance of one by Augustin Betz on enzymology in the “chemie paperback” series is particularly welcome. This book is intended to provide the reader with basic knowledge of enzymology and is designed in the first place for students of biology and medicine. This purpose is fulfilled in every respect. All that is important about enzymes is summarized in eleven chapters: structure, biological function, mode of action and isolation, as well as applications in analysis, therapy, and industry. The presentation is very skilful and clear, and it is especially commendable that emphasis is repeatedly laid on techniques. For a new edition it remains only to hope that the chapter on allosteric enzymes will be made more detailed and that hydrophobic interactions will bedescribed. The book can be most warmly recommended to all students who wish to enter the field of enzymology. Horst Sund [NB 254 IE] Organic Semiconductors. Dark- and Photoconductivity of Organic Solids. By H. Meier. Monographs in Modern Chemistry 2. Verlag Chemie GmbH, Weinheim 1974. 1st edit., XV, 661 pp., 150 figs., 70 tables, bound, DM 138.-. Here, from the hand of a skilful researcher, we have a monograph in which the phenomena of photoconductivity in organic substances are placed in the foreground. There is undoubtedly a need for such a presentation, as physical processes in the field of biology and similar questions are matters of topical interest. In the first part of the book the author has succeeded convincingly in picking up the sometimes complete analogies and the specific differences between the properties of inorganic crystals and those of solid organic substances. A chapter on the methods used for investigating organic substances, is followed by a second part which deals with electrical conductivity and chemical structure on a large number of examples. In the third part the reader finds a treatment of darkand photoconductivity, mainly from theoretical points of view. The fourth part gives applications from, inter a h , the fields of photobiological and industrial processes; photosynthesis, the processes of vision, conduction in membranes, and heterogeneous catalysts are only a few of the keywords. There is also a discussion of the extent to which inorganic materials can be replaced by organic compounds in electronic systems. The author has succeeded in his aim of providing an intelligible presentation in spite of the high information density. Precise formulations in a text that has been kept brief are supplemented by numerous illustrations, more than 75 structural formulas and tables, and an unusually detailed bibliography with more than 2600 references. In this way it has been possible to make contact with the scientist who wants a review of this field, as well as providing the specialist interested in the properties of specific substances with useful ideas. Pocketbook 23,Verlag Chemie GmbH, Weinheim 1974. 1st edit., VI, 134 pp., 51 figs., 10 tables, bound, D M 14.80. This book by Christensen and Palmer, which now appears in excellent translation, has won a special place among student texts, being ideally suited to the treatment of enzyme kinetics for a course of self-study. It is intended equally for students of biology, chemistry and medicine, not only because such students should know about enzymes but also because the facts about enzyme kinetics can also be applied to pharmacological problems and to transport processes. The difficulty of the program increases continuously from relatively easy beginnings, and on reaching the end one has the feeling of having mastered enzymology. This applies not only to students but also to specialists whose student days are long past and who use the program as a refresher course-for them too it is excellently suited. Everything about enzyme kinetics is described: the derivation of the Michaelis-Menten equation, the importance of kinetic parameters and methods of their determination, the types of inhibition, allosteric enzymes (here the text could be made somewhat more detailed in a new edition), and also the pH and temperature dependence of enzyme-catalyzed reactions. The reader can check his progress from the problems. The book can be recommended unreservedly to all who wish to refresh their knowledge of enzyme kinetics or require supplementary information to lecture notes.
