The astonishing developments in the field of bioelectrochemical membrane electrodes is certainly a result of the
enormous practical importance which these bioanalogous
sensors are gaining in analytical biochemistry, diagnostic
clinical chemistry, for biotechnological process control,
and for reaction control. A (German language) summary
of the fundamental principles, of the various possible applications, and of further developments of electrochemical
measuring systems will, therefore, be welcome, particularly
to clinical medical practitioners, biochemists, biophysicists, and process engineers.
The functional principles of bioelectrochemical membrane electrodes, such as the membrane concept, ionic selectivity, membrane-immobilized enzymes, streamline form
for flow measuring sensors are copied from nature. The
construction of highly specific electrochemical sensors is
often bioanalogous down to the smallest detail. This is true
not only for the measuring systems for the determination
of the activities of metal and nonmetal ions and of dissolved gases (e.g. 0, and c o , ) , but also for biodetectors
for the highly specific determination of ionic and nonionic
cell metabolites.
Bioelectrochemical measuring sensors include a large
number of enzyme electrodes, which are employed as the
sensitive elements of gas and ion sensors. Immobilized microorganisms, cell organelles such as mitochondria, and
cell tissue are employed as enzyme carriers. Highly selective immune reactions are the functional basis of immune
electrodes; hormone-receptor reactions are also exploited
electroanalytically in membrane electrodes.
The authors explain the bioanalytically important topic
of bioelectrochemical electrodes in seven chapters. After
an introduction to ion-selective measurement circuits and
some physicochemical principles, quantitative electrode
characteristics are discussed. Further sections cover structure and binding, electrically neutral ionophoric antibiotics and synthetic carriers (including chiroselective transport molecules), ion-selective carrier membrane systems
(transport principle, membrane production), ion-selective
carrier membrane electrodes (derivation, continuous flow
sensors, dip electrodes), gas-sensitive electrodes (potentiometric and polarographic measuring cells), and finally
membrane electrodes with sensitized detectors.
The book is clearly written and reflects the competence
of the authors and their experience with bioelectrodes. But
chemical thermodynamics is thin ice for them even when
they only need to copy it out. The free enthalpy (Gibbs) is
naturally “work potential” and not as asserted on p. 2 “the
amount of heat taken u p or evolved”. The quantity named
after Loschmidt-Auogadro is not a number but a constant
possessing dimensions. The molar free enthalpy of reaction AG is not known “as the chemical potential p” (p. 4),
but rather A C = C v i y , is the change in free enthalpy for
one stoichiometric turnover and is given by the sum of the
chemical potentials of the reaction partners, whereby the
stoichiometric coefficients of the educts are taken as negative.
These inadequacies in the introduction d o not, however,
detract from the service the authors have performed in
providing a good and comprehensible presentation of a

This introduction to modern N M R methods is aimed
mainly at students of chemistry and related sciences and at
N M R spectroscopists in industry.
The first half of the book comprises six chapters which
contain a vivid presentation of the fundamentals of high
resolution N M R spectroscopy of dissolved compounds.
The basic physical background is dealt with in Chapter 1.
The following chapters are devoted to the important N M R
parameters, chemical shift (Chapter 2), spin-spin coupling
(Chapter 3), and relaxation (Chapter 4). It is particularly
pleasing that these chapters d o not just refer to examples
with protons and carbon-13, but also touch on the NMR
properties of other nuclei such as ”B, ”N, ‘70,I9F, and
3’P. The third chapter on the analysis of spin systems is
also a successful introduction to spectral interpretation
and gets by largely without formulas. The chapter o n relaxation is satisfying since all the important phenomena
are clearly presented, although the treatment of exchange
phenomena and instrumental details at this juncture may
confuse some readers, since the modern spectrometer system is not treated until the fifth chapter. The sixth chapter
discusses the nature of the samples and the problems of
the standardization of spectra.
In the second half of the book the author deals with
more complex N M R techniques and introduces examples
of multinuclear N M R methods. Many of the double resonance methods described in Chapter 7 are already outdated
as a result of the rapid development of pulse spectroscopy.
A more detailed treatment of I3C N M R spectroscopy
would have been desirable here. It is pleasing that the most
recent N M R techniques are mentioned (Chapter 8). The
short presentation of solid and in vivo N M R methods is
particularly successful. The examples chosen to illustrate
the application of two dimensional NMR spectroscopy are
less fortunate; there is n o mention of shift correlation diagrams, which are of great practical importance because the
bonding of the C and H atoms in the organic skeleton can
be derived from them without any prior information. Immediate chemical applications are discussed in the last
chapter. In addition to ‘ H and I3C NMR, the chemical relevance of ’Li, 23Na, ”B, ”AI, ”N, 3’P, I7O and I9F N M R
spectroscopy is demonstrated on the basis of examples.
The appendix contains 18 short exercises together with
their solutions, a reference list that is, however, too short,
and a list of contents.
This book will be of immense value to those seeking an
insight into high resolution N M R spectroscopy. Its
strength lies in the clear presentation of N M R phenomena.
On the other hand, very little comparison material, which
is of such importance for the N M R spectroscopist, is given. This reasonably priced book can be highly recom355
mended to undergraduate and postgraduate students who
come into contact with NMR spectroscopy.
