In the last few years fatty acids have
come to be seen as increasingly important for understanding cellular processes. Transcription factors that are

parts. The first part describes the molecular basis of the interactions of proteins

In the second part of the book, the
roles played by the proteins described
earlier in cellular homeostasis are discussed in more detail. Special attention
is devoted to certain important aspects,
including the expression and function of
FABPs in the brain, as well as signaling
pathways and regulation processes that
are mediated by fatty acids. Emphasis is
given to the interactions between intracellular lipid-binding proteins (including
FABPs, CRABPs, and CRBPs) and
nuclear receptors that can be activated
by ligands, such as PPARs, RAR, or
RXR. Another topic that receives attention in this part of the book is the role of
nuclear receptors of the PPAR family in
the differentiation of cells and in the
homeostasis of glucose metabolism. The
importance of PPARs in relation to
arteriosclerosis, the control of inflammatory processes, and cancer treatment
is also discussed in detail.
The book's well-planned structure is
also evident in the list of contents, which
provides the reader with a detailed
picture of the topics covered. Furthermore, the clear and comprehensive
index enables one to quickly locate a
required topic. Each chapter is completed by a substantial and well-chosen
bibliography. The book conveys a very
favorable impression, but could have
been further improved by including
color graphics to illustrate the threedimensional structures of all the proteins shown.
In view of the thoroughly up-to-date
coverage of the topics in this book, and
the comprehensive and detailed descriptions of the proteins that play a key role
in fatty acid metabolism, the work is
indispensable for basic researchers, specialists in industry and universities, and
advanced students and post-doctoral
researchers. The editors Asim K. Duttaroy and Friedrich Spener have succeeded in putting together an
date volume on a very interesting area
of research that is well worth reading,
and there is no doubt that many others
like me will derive pleasure from it.

Despite the undoubtedly bright future
prospects opened up by developments in
green biotechnology, chemical methods
of crop protection are still one of the
main pillars used to support year-onyear productivity in agriculture. They
ceased long ago to be just a crude
“chemical bludgeon”, and have developed into a sophisticated modern technology that uses the latest advances in
the scientific disciplines involved. The
IUPAC International Congress on the
Chemistry of Crop Protection (formerly
called the International Congress of
Pesticide Chemistry) has taken place
every four years since the end of the
1960s. This book contains, in condensed
form, the texts of the six plenary sessions
and the 24 invited lectures on six main
topics covered at the 10th Congress,
held in Basel in 2002.
