Alloying platinum surfaces with 3d transition metals makes better cathodes for fuel
cells. In their Communication on page 2897 ff., J. K. Nørskov and co-workers show
that this process results in a tuning of the electronic structure of the surface and
increases its catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction. The cover picture
shows how a wave function involving oxygen p and surface platinum d states in Pt3Co
is influenced by cobalt atoms in the second layer.
Gas-Phase Reactions
About 135 types of molecules have already been identified in space, especially in
interstellar clouds. In his Review on page 2842 ff., I. W. M. Smith discusses gas-phase
reactions at very low temperatures which contribute to an understanding of
astrochemistry.
Metalloproteins
In their Communication on page 2864 ff. V. L. Pecoraro and co-workers describe how
changing only one of the amino acids in the primary sequence of TRI peptides can
result in selective control over the coordination number of a metal center.
Metallabenzenes
The isolation and characterization of air-stable metallabenzenes with a transition
metal of the second transition series is described by G. C. Jia, H. P. Xia, and coworkers in their Communication on page 2920 ff.
