Diffuse diffraction data from disordered compounds can be interpreted with new
numerical algorithms; however, there are few examples of quantitative structure
refinement against all data and not only Bragg reflections. In the Communication on
page 3917 ff., the authors demonstrate the application of evolutionary algorithms to
solve the structure of an aluminum-stabilized lanthanum subiodide. The cover picture
shows a diffraction pattern of the compound in the background and a section of the
disordered structure model in the center.
