Environmentally friendly chemistry is often inspired by nature itself. This principle is
portrayed in the cover picture depicting recent advances in the palladium-catalyzed
selective oxidation of organic molecules with molecular oxygen. In the Review on pp.
3400 ff., S. S. Stahl outlines the mechanistic principles and diversity of applications of
“Palladium Oxidase Catalysis”. These catalytic reactions are reminiscent of enzymatic
oxidases in which independent dioxygen reduction and substrate oxidation steps are
coupled in a sequential, two-stage mechanism.
