amongst metalloid clusters …
… is one described in the Communication from H. Schnckel et al. on page 8201 ff. A
Si centered Al44 structural unit is protected by 12 AlR units to give Si@Al56R’12. The
Si atom itself has a coordination number of 4 and the Al atoms in the SiAl44 scaffolding
form four Al-centered cuboctahedra. The formation of this structure by doping with one
Si atom is a reminder that care should be taken in the interpretation of the characterization data of such nanoscale metal particles.
