Fr!chet recently reported on onepot reaction cascades using star-shaped
polymers with core-confined catalysts in
Angewandte Chemie,[1a] and discussed
the dendrimer effect in homogeneous
catalysis in a review in Advanced Synthesis & Catalysis.[1b] He is a member of
the advisory boards for both of these

J. M. J. Frchet
One of the most prestigious prizes of the
American Chemical Society (ACS), the
Arthur C. Cope Award, will be awarded
to Jean M. J. Fr!chet (University of
California at Berkeley, USA) in 2007.
Fr!chet studied chemistry and chemical
engineering at the
Institut de Chimie
et Physique Industrielle (Institute of
Industrial Chemistry and Physics;
now CPE), Lyon,
France, and completed his PhD in
organic and polymer chemistry at
the State University of New York.
He joined the UniJ. M. J. Fr!chet
versity of Ottawa
(Canada) in 1973
there until 1987, when he moved to
Cornell University (Ithaca, NY). He has
held a professorship at the University of
California at Berkeley as well as a
position as senior scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
since 1997. His research interests lie in
the area of nanoscience and nanotechnology and are directed toward the
design, synthesis, and applications of
functional macromolecules. Current
topics include new synthetic approaches
to macromolecules with controlled
architecture, including dendrimers. The
ACS recognizes Fr!chet for the breadth
and quality of his work in areas such as
molecular machines, light-harvesting
and energy conversion, lithography, cat-

Residents of the USA are normally
given preference. The research interests
of Freund@s group are focused on the
chemistry and physics of solid surfaces,
including the structure and dynamics of
oxide surfaces. His group is also interested in model systems for heterogeneous catalysis as well as in nanostructures
and clusters. He recently described the
size-dependent oxidation mechanism of
supported Pd nanoparticles[2b] and the
synthesis and structure of ultrathin aluminosilicate films in Angewandte Chemie.[2b]
Freund studied at the UniversitAt zu
KBln (Germany) and went on to obtain
his PhD there in 1978 under the guidance of G. Hohlneicher. At the same
time, he worked as a high school teacher
at the Gymnasium Solingen. In 1979, he
joined the University of Pennsylvania
and Xerox Corporation (USA) as a
postdoctoral researcher. He returned
to Cologne in 1981 to complete his
habilitation (1983). He then joined the
2006 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim
UniversitAt Erlangen and remained
there until 1987, when he accepted a
position at the Ruhr-UniversitAt
Bochum. He has been a director at the
Fritz Haber Institute since 1996.

Claude S. Hudson Award to
P. Sina
The Claude S. Hudson Award in Carbohydrate Chemistry will be awarded to
Pierre SinaG (Ecole Normale Sup!rieure, Paris, France) in 2007. SinaG@s
research activities are focused on oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates, cyclodextrins, and glycosidase inhibitors. He
recently discussed the influence of
ceramide on carbohydrate–carbohydrate recognition in Angewandte Chemie[3a] and described a new method for the
synthesis of fluorinated exo-glycals and
their time-dependent inhibition of
Chemistry – A European Journal.[3b]
SinaG completed his engineering
degree at the Ecole Nationale Sup!rieure
(National College for Chemical Industries),
France, and completed his PhD in
1966 at the University
under the guidance of S. David.
He subsequently
joined the group
of R. W. Jeanloz
at Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hos- P. SinaG
pital in Boston
research fellow. He returned to France
in 1968 and joined the CNRS in Orsay
(Paris). A year later, he accepted an
associate professorship at the University
of Orl!ans, where he was later
appointed Professor of Biochemistry
(1972). In 1986, he joined the University
of Paris and the Ecole Normale Sup!rieure (Paris) as Professor of Organic
Chemistry. He was named a corresponding member of the French Academy of
Science in 1996 and became a full
member in 2003. SinaG is an editorial
board member for Chemistry – A European Journal.
