This is the fifth edition of this
well-known text. As before, the
subject is treated comprehensively
and is up to date. Published in
2009 it contains references from
2008. The treatment includes discussions of the basics of the subject
(e.g. stabilities), and the underlying chemical principles responsible for these properties. The compounds themselves are covered
in a conventional way, viz. metal
hydrides, metal alkyls, carbonyls,
phosphines, pi and sigma bonded
complexes, etc. The various reaction types are well discussed, viz. oxidative addition, reductive
elimination, insertion, elimination, additions and substitutions.
Catalysis and applications are discussed including applications to
organic synthesis. Bioorganometallic chemistry is discussed in a
final chapter. There is a particularly useful chapter on the various
physical techniques used to study organometallic compounds.
Each chapter contains a list of references and a series of student
problems. Usefully there is a concluding section giving summary
answers and solutions strategies for the problems. This is a very
useful book, suitable for project-oriented undergraduate students
and research students in the field. Teaching academics will find
the treatment very accessible and sufficiently comprehensive. The
book is a basic part of an organometallic library.
