WINNERS OF THE 1985 SLIDE COMPETITION
SIDNEY BLOCK and the AUDIOVISUAL AIDS SUBCOMMITTEE OF THE ARA EDUCATION COMMITTEE
The American Rheumatism Association Audiovisual Aids Subcommittee is pleased to present the
winners of the 1985 Slide Competition. The annual
competition is part of the ongoing effort to improve the
1981 Revised Clinical Slide Collection on the Rheumatic Diseases. As a result of the generous cooperation of the members of the ARA in submitting slides
and radiographs, the first supplement to the 1981
revision was produced and made available in 1985.
Members of the Audiovisual Aids Subcommittee of the
American Rheumatism Association Education Committee: William
Beetham, MD; Sidney Block, MD, Chair; Joseph Croft, MD;
William Ginsburg, MD; Timothy Harrington, MD; Bernhard
Singsen, MD; Ann McGuire.
Submitted for publication December 1 1 , 1985; accepted
December 12, 1985.
The 1985 Supplement contains 40 new slides, 28
representing new topics and the remainder considered
to be improvements on earlier material. The new
topics include subacute cutaneous lupus, photosensitivity reaction, periungual telangiectasia, subcutaneous calcinosis, palatal vasculitis, Kawasaki disease,
calcium oxalate crystals, septic discitis, herniated
disc, and thyroid acropachy, among others. In making
these selections, the current members of the Subcommittee sought to maintain the high standard for selection and technical reproduction set by prior members.
Included with the 1985 Supplement of slides is a
set of 8 half-hour cassette tapes providing an audio
rendition of the written syllabus. Thus, the 1981 Revised Collection, together with the 1985 Supplement,
may now be studied in a variety of ways, taking

The cost of production of the audiotapes was minimal
and did not appreciably increase the cost of the 1985
Supplement.
The Subcommittee invites comments from the
members regarding the usefulness of the audiotapes.
It also continues to urge the members to participate in
the Collection’s evolution by submitting slides and
radiographs for future supplements. All unused materials will be returned. Accepted materials will be
acknowledged appropriately in the syllabus and the
donors will be given extra first-quality reproductions
of their slides. Submit materials to Sidney R. Block,
MD, Chair, Audiovisual Aids Subcommittee, American Rheumatism Association, 17 Executive Park
Drive NE, Suite 480, Atlanta, GA 30329.
