BRITISH TOURISTS TELL OF QUAKE
Run, run, run, the
PLANE CRAZY: Experts claim the ?ageing? system needs updating
SKIES ABOVE THE
UK ?FULL TO LIMIT?
BRITAIN?S ?ageing? air traffic
control system needs urgently
updating as it struggles to cope with
our packed skies, experts claim.
Yesterday was the busiest day ever
so far in Britain?s skies, with more
than 8,800 flights .
The sheer number is pushing a system which is already at its ?limit? to
breaking point, according to the National Air Traffic Control Service
(Nats).
Jamie Hutchison, from Nats, led
calls for a drastic modernisation
before the system collapses.
He said: ?In the last few weeks we
have already safely managed recordbreaking daily traffic levels, but the
ageing design of UK airspace means
we will soon reach the limits of what
can be managed without delays
rising significantly.?
Without changes, the Department
for Transport estimates that people
will face 3,100 days? worth of flight
delays by 2030 ? 50 times more than
in 2015 ? and 8,000 cancelled flights
every year.
To combat this, Nats is rolling out a
new 0million computer system ?
but bosses argue that the investment
must be accompanied by a redesign
of the UK?s network of flight paths
and air routes.
Mr Hutchison said: ?Traffic growth
is good news for the economy and
means more choice for passengers,
but it also puts pressure on the
capacity of our airspace infrastruc-
? by OLIVER PRITCHARD
ture. The UK?s airspace was designed
decades ago and doesn?t allow us to
take advantage of the technology on
board modern aircraft that would
raise capacity, and also reduce emissions and noise for communities on
the ground.?
The Government says it is planning
to tackle the problems.
Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: ?Our new aviation strategy
will look beyond the new runway at
Heathrow and set out a comprehensive long-term plan for UK aviation.
New fear
of tremors
THE British Government issued
?
advice for UK holidaymakers
caught up in the chaos as hundreds of
people waited outside Kos Airport .
They urged tourists to be aware of
the risk of new tremors and to follow
instructions from local authorities and
tour operators.
A government spokesman said: ?If
you?re in the affected area and it is safe
to do so, contact friends and family to
tell them you are safe. Flights and ferry
services are currently being significantly disrupted.?
Holidaymakers were told to
contact their airline, ferry company
or tour operator for updates.
Thomas Cook said all its 2,682 British
customers in Kos, below, and 441 in
Bodrum were accounted for.
?
Growth
?It will support jobs and economic
growth across the whole of the UK.?
Martin Rolfe, chief executive of
Nats, said the consultation process
could take between two and three
years, ?so millions and millions of
people will have a say in aircraft
flying over their houses?.
He added: ?Local communities are
very obviously concerned about what
more traffic might look like, but
actually modernising airspace means
we can keep aircraft higher for
longer.
?We can have them descend more
steeply than they currently do.?
The news comes as Heathrow?s
third runway looks set to be approved
while a illion programme to double the size of Manchester Airport?s
Terminal 2 began yesterday.

TERROR IN GREECE AND TURKEY
room is shaking
TWO DIE
AND 200
INJURED
? by MARC WALKER
TERRIFIED holidaymakers
ran for their lives yesterday
as a deadly earthquake
rocked the Greek islands
and Turkey.
Two people died and more than
200 were injured as the quake ?
measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale
? left seaside resorts in ruins.
The Greek isle of Kos and the Turkish resort of Gumbet were among those
worst hit as tremors destroyed buildings and generated a tsunami which
washed tourist boats ashore.
Guests fled their hotel rooms as
shockwaves struck around 1.30am yesterday. A series of aftershocks followed
throughout the early hours.
Around 8,000 British tourists were believed to be in Kos alone. But amazingly,
there were no reports of any being injured, according to the Association of
British Travel Agents.
The two men who died ? one Swedish
and the other from Turkey ? had beendrinking in a bar on Kos when the roof
fell down on top of them.
Traumatised Brits told of shaking
buildings collapsing, toppled masonry
and debris from the beach washed far
inland by the huge waves.
Scary
Naomi Ruddock, on holiday in Kos
with her mother Eleanor, said she had
been told it was the worst earthquake
the area had seen.
The 22-year-old, from London, added:
?We were asleep and just felt the room
shaking. The room moved. Literally
everything was moving.
?It kind of felt like you were on a boat
and it was swaying really fast from side
to side. You felt seasick.?
Lauren Duffy, 20, from Merseyside,
said debris from broken marble statues
and shattered glass was strewn near
her hotel in Kos?s old town.
The Chester University student said:
?We were woken up by really aggressive shaking. We didn?t know what it
was. You couldn?t find your balance. It
was just a scary situation.?
Kristian Stevens, from Nelson, Lancs,
said the building he was had been
?shaking like a jelly?.
Ex-Scotland international footballer
Kevin McNaughton, was staying near
Dalaman, around 120 miles from Bodrum, when the quake hit.
The former Cardiff City and Bolton
player, 34, tweeted: ?Just experienced
earthquake in Turkey, literally crapped
myself. Room shaking all over. Stood
outside now, not sure what to do.?
Some tourists were forced to spend
the night sleeping rough on the streets
after their hotels had been badly damaged. Others complained at being
forced to queue for hours in the baking
sun outside closed Kos Airport.
The earthquake hit at the peak of the
holiday season, triggering delays to
flights all across Europe.
The airport reopened, last night but
thousands of tourists were still facing
long delays for flights.

The Match Of The Day host went from Three Lions
hero to villain after angry supporters claimed his

Fans said they tuned into the weekly football show to
see the matches ? not Lineker.
Others pledged to boycott Walkers Crisps while he

The backlash came after Lineker was named as the Beeb?s

Ms Williams was rescued

Couple?s restaurant threat
MEL B could lose her posh
Beverly Hills restaurant in
her bitter divorce battle with
?thug? Stephen Belafonte.
The ex-Spice Girl split from the film
and TV producer after accusing him of
physically abusing her for years.
ENGLAND football star
Siobhan Chamberlain has
called on young girls to be
inspired by the ?fearless?
side of Disney princesses.
The Lioness said there
was more to being a
princess than being ?pink
and flowery?.
She said: ?We?re trying
get more girls inspired to
start playing football.
?Obviously princesses
can sometimes be seen
as pretty and pink
and flowery.
?They are not perceived
the way they should be and
for us it?s channelling our
inner princesses to show
that being one is also being
fearless, determined,
confident and brave.?
Goalie Siobhan, 33, part
of the England squad
competing in the European
Championships in the
Netherlands, is backing the
Dream Big campaign
which had been launched
by the FA and Disney.
The initiative is aimed at
encouraging girls to take

Siobhan said: ?We can
grow the game if we can
inspire young girls to
play football.?

said: ?Everyone is terrified that we are going to close. All of us read what is going on,
and while Stephen is still here now and
again, nothing is discussed about money.
?Mel has not come into the restaurant
and assured us of our future.
?Clearly their divorce and the nastiness
between them show that they will not be
doing business together in
the future, so everyone is
fearing the worst.?
Serafina manager Raymond Khaneshan played
down the fears. He said:
?I see no reason why we
shouldn?t prosper.?
Mel and Belafonte were
both unavailable for
comment last night.
Now staff at LA?s Serafina restaurant fear
the singer may have to sell the business to
make quick cash. The couple, both 42, opened the
swanky eaterie last year.

GYPSY
REVOLT
? by EWAN FOSKETT
VILLAGERS fought off
travellers by digging
a trench to trap their
caravans in a field.
The well-heeled residents
employed the ?gypsy tactics? until they moved on.
The travellers even called
police to complain about the
locals? ?Blitz spirit? ? moaning
that

had
been breached.
Within minutes of the convoy
arriving, villagers marched
over to confront them, used
cars to barricade the entrance,
and told them they had one
hour to get off the land.

them, a mechanical digger was

gave up and fled.
Lois De?Ath praised her

But one traveller, Tracey

BOXER Amir Khan is
considering opening his
own illion school.
The former world
champion, 30, spent
millions building an
800-seat wedding venue
and banqueting hall.
But construction was
halted earlier this year
when it was revealed that
the building work had
already cost double the
illion budget.
Now Amir, a married
father-of-one has
revealed he is considering
a ?new direction? for the
venue in his hometown
of Bolton.
It could now become
his pioneering project for
a school or university.
A school is believed
to be the preferred option,
as the town already has
the University of Bolton.
Amir said yesterday:
?There are a few changes
made on it and we have
taken a bit of time to
look at working on a new
project there.
?I have been so busy in

I want to make sure that

?Pinhead? overdose can be deadly
?
EXCLUSIVE
by OLIVER PRITCHARD
A DRUG which killed pop
legend Prince is being
mixed with cocaine to
form a deadly cocktail.
And a former British GP has
warned that users can overdose
on the ?size of a pin?.
Judith Yates said: ?The difference between a therapeutic dose
and a lethal dose is microscopic.?
Prince died aged 47 after accidentally taking an overdose of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid.
It was also blamed for the death
of teaching assistant Alex Keogh,
28, who overdosed on Christmas
Eve in Birmingham. Revellers are
believed to be by-passing conventional pushers to buy from shady
internet sites on the dark web.
Then they mix it with cocaine.

HEALTH REPORT - BY TOM LEATHER
M
eet Len from Bognor
Regis, he suffered
from aches and pains
in the legs and feet,
plus swollen ankles ever since
returning to England after living
in Spain for 13 years and settling
back into English life again. ?My
legs and feet get all achy, and I get
a bit of swelling on the ankles?.
It?s hindered Len and his wife?s
daily life, ?you?re not able to walk
too far because your legs started
aching?. Things then got much
worse for Len, ?I got cramp in bed.
There?s nothing like it, if you?re
lying in bed at three o?clock in
the morning and you?re getting
this horrible cramping sensation.?
What?s more, Len?s wife also
suffered with similar problems
including aches and pains in her
legs.
?...Anything
that gets rid of my
aches & pains?
He and his wife were at a loss.
Until they saw an advert within
their daily newspaper for the
REVITIVE Circulation Booster.
?You know, I said to my wife,
what do you think? Shall we
invest in it? And she said well,
anything that gets rid of my aches
and pains I would do anything
for, so I said right, we?ll get one.?
Now Len and his wife can?t live
without, it reduced aches, pains
and swollen feet, allowing them
to be more active and they have
easily incorporated it into their
daily routine. ?When we?re sat
down watching the television, in
the evening, my wife always has
the ?rst session and when she?s
?nished I go over and I have mine.
It does a wonderful job for us,
we?re very, very happy.?
?We now have this
relaxed way of life?
?We?ve been using it for nine
months now and it?s so nice that
we now have this relaxed way of
life.?

FISH and chip shops are

More chippies than ever are

And salad is now firmly on the

The National Federation of Fish

rising price of fish.
The average price of fish and chips

Today?s tip-top TV bets from the Starform tipsters
DAYS SET TO MAKE
IT PAY THIS TIME
BEST OF DAYS (2.25) last year?s smart Royal Lodge Stakes winner,
can bounce back from a below par Royal Ascot effort at Newbury.
1.50
Newbury ?Hat-trick seeking
Realize is unbeaten since
joining his present yard. He has been raised
11lb for his latest success but still below his
highest winning mark on the all-weather. He
remains of interest with Ryan Moore
booked. Remarkable is another for the
short list after two solid efforts in
competitive handicaps at Ascot this
campaign. However, a chance is taken with
EXECUTIVE FORCE. He won on his debut
at this track in the soft and ran a blinder,
again with some ease in the ground, in a
Listed event at Maisons-Laffitte. He should
relish the conditions and the drop in trip
may also help.
Newmarket ? John Gosden
has won this race six times
since it was first run in 1994 but his Smart
Together needs to improve significantly to
make it seven. SERENADA may be the
answer to an open renewal. She opened
her account by getting the better of Apphia
at Sandown in April and has since run well
in a couple of Group events. She finished
behind Apphia in the Ribblesdale at Royal
Ascot but did not get the run of the race.
That was an improved performance from
Apphia and she may have more to offer
along with Isabel De Urbina, who will find
this less daunting after her effort in the
Oaks.
2.10
Newbury ? This can go to
MAGICAL MEMORY. He has
winning form at this level and higher and
showed the right attitude to get up close
home at Haydock on his latest start. Both
Koropick and Eqtiraan are possible
improvers from the their age group though
they are yet to prove themselves on a slow
surface. Gifted Master is interesting back
at this trip. He has bags of early pace and
won a Group Three at this distance last
year on easy ground.
Market Rasen ? Last year?s
winner Red Tornado is not in
the same sort of form he was 12 months
ago but has slipped to a mark just 1lb
higher. The handicapper has hammered
John Constable for the winning the
Swinton by raising him 16lb and he will do
well to overcome that sort of rise. EBONY
EXPRESS is just 4lb higher for his narrow
Uttoxeter victory but remains very well
treated on his best form of two years ago.
There is nothing to choose between Mad
Jack Mytton and Curious Carlos after
they fought out the finish at Aintree last
month. Both have claims on that evidence.
2.25
Newbury ? Spark Plug has
been in decent form this
season, so has to be considered despite
conceding weight but BEST OF DAYS gets
the nod. He finished last season with victory
in the Royal Lodge and clearly was not
himself on his return in the King Edward VII.
He should appreciate the drop in grade and
trip. Mount Logan has been disappointing
this campaign but it would come as no
surprise to see him bounce back. He is a
possible on the best of his form of last
season.
2.40
3.00
3.20
Market Rasen ? A
competitive renewal and
DAYS OF HEAVEN is suggested. He has
a progressive profile over fences, having
won his last three. His sound and accurate
jumping won the day when he scored at
Uttoxeter and he is not harshly treated, off
a 3lb higher mark. There was a
remarkable performance from
Earthmoves when winning the trial for
this race last month. He looked beaten
turning for home but flew over the last
three fences to win going away. He looks
a live threat along with Henryville, who
was brought down at the final obstacle 12
months ago when still in contention.
3.35
?
TRIP DROPPER:
Best Of Days
Newbury ? Richard Fahey
has won two of the last four
runnings of this event and comes here
mob-handed with five chances. He may
hit the jackpot again with MAGGIES
ANGEL. She sets the standard, coming
here after running her stablemate close
in a Newmarket Listed affair. She drops
back in trip but that is not a problem and
she seems to handle most surfaces.
Mother Of Dragons has shown plenty
of speed in her races and ran well in
the Queen Mary behind the classy
Heartache. She is at the right end of the
weights along with Debutante?s Ball,
who was just behind her at Ascot and
has since posted a decent effort in
France.

It also signalled a step change in the career
of the quietly-spoken Irishman, who has made
Yorkshire his home since acquiring Musley
Bank Stables in 2004. Fahey?s operation is no
longer seen as just a winner factory but a
producer of equine quality.
The transformation at Musley Bank has been
astonishing, similar to the upward trajectory of
Fahey, who says he?s living the dream.
His stats are impressive. More than 2,500
career winners, equalling the record of 235
winners in a calendar year in 2015, already
more than a century of winners this year. Not
bad for a man who was not too keen on
becoming a trainer after retiring as a jump
jockey.
?I never particularly wanted to be a

horses and making a living when a friend
asked me to train a few for him, so I had to

?I concentrated on the training side although
I feel that the experience of buying and selling
has helped me. We are always looking for value
for money. I am still hands-on with the buying
and selling. Ribchester cost ?105,000 but 100
grand is an awful lot of money.?
In fact, most of Fahey?s purchases are in the
?bargain? bracket of ?20-30,000. One who cost
slightly more at 36,000 guineas was Maggies
Angel and she heads a five-strong team from the
yard in today?s Weatherbys Super Sprint.
?Maggies Angel could be thrown in at the
weights and whether she is quick enough at 5f
at that level we will see. We also have Requinto

good solid chance of winning it and it is a race

SERENADA MY
CHOICE RIDE
MY best ride of the day is
SERENADA (2.40) in the
Betbright Aphrodite
Stakes at Newmarket.
I rode her when she was
third in her maiden at
Newbury last season.
Since then she has
beaten Apphia, who
reopposes in the Listed
contest over 12 furlongs,
and she was a fine third to
Shutter Speed in the
Musidora Stakes at York.
Shutter Speed gave the
form a boost when fourth
in the French Oaks.
I think you can strike a
line through Serenada?s
latest run in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal
Ascot last month.
But this is no ordinary horse and this is
definitely no ordinary trainer.
Richard Fahey is happy to muck in with the
plethora of jobs that make up the daily routine
of his 230-acre racing yard in Malton.
And he clearly takes extra pleasure in hosing
down the magnificent Ribchester.
Midway through an electrifying Flat season,
Fahey?s pride and joy looks a dead cert to
become the champion miler of Europe.
He is being prepared for the Sussex Stakes at
Goodwood on August 2 where he will bid for a
hat-trick of Group One victories after his
peerless success in the Lockinge at Newbury
and the Queen Anne Stakes.
Fahey is one of racing?s good guys. His
popularity was hammered home by the
universal praise and acclaim that greeted
Ribchester?s Royal Ascot success last month.
3
That was an ultracompetitive Group Two
and although she was
beaten in the closing
stages she was short of
room.
The lightly-raced and
improving Appia should
be feared and Charlie
Appleby?s Skiffle has
good pieces of form.
My next best ride is
RAY?S THE MONEY (5.35)
in the Betfinder By
Betbright Handicap for
Michael Bell.
I think he will be suited
by the step up in trip to 10
furlongs and he is
improving all the time.
BALLARD DOWN (3.50)
is interesting in the
Betbright Recall Handicap, although he might be
better on all-weather
surfaces having been
edged out at Chelmsford
last time.
I rode the son of Group
One-winning miler
Canford Cliffs at
Wolverhampton in May,
when he had a visor on
for the first time and
impressed.
MOUNTAIN RESCUE
(5.00) takes his chance in
the Betbright Handicap.
Trainer Chris Wall has
decided to drop Mountain
Rescue to seven furlongs
for the first time since his
first appearance in a
handicap in October
2014.
Shame
He has the early pace
for seven furlongs but we
will need a strong gallop.
I was delighted and
disappointed with
Limato?s run in second
behind Harry Angel in
the July Cup last week.
Obviously it was a shame
to lose, and second is
never nice but he ran his
heart out.
He felt back to his best
form. He has now won a
July Cup and finished
second, and a horse had
not won consecutive July
Cups since Right Boy in
1959 so I?m very proud of
him.
This is not an excuse
but the slow early pace
and the fast second half
of the race did not suit.

year but for being brought down at
the final fence.

ZENAFIRE (8.00, Haydock) is in
cracking form and up just 2lb for
latest success.
ONE TO SWERVE
GHAYADH (4.10, Newbury) won
on fast ground at Beverley but looks
vulnerable conceding weight on an
easy surface.
ONE TO FOLLOW
SULA ISLAND finished her race
off well when fifth on her debut over
12 furlongs at Lingfield in midweek.
Her willing attitude should win her
races on the Flat and over hurdles.

RACING was abandoned
after three races at
Haydock yesterday after
a horror incident in which
a starting stalls handler
later died in hospital.
The man, named as Stephen
Yarborough, sustained the fatal
injuries after apparently falling
under the wheels of the stalls as
they were being moved for the
fourth race on the card.
He was treated at the scene and an
air ambulance was called to take
him to nearby Whiston Hospital.
A statement from RaceTech read:

John Bozza, CEO at RaceTech
expressed his shock and sympathy
saying: ?Stephen was an experienced
and popular member of the team;
he will be hugely missed by
everyone. We are doing all we can to
support Stephen?s family and the
investigation at this stage.?
The stewards held an inquiry and
Clerk of the course Kirkland
Tellwright informed them the
racecourse executive had decided to
abandon the rest of the card as ?the
police had been informed of the
accident and were due to arrive at the
track to conduct their inquiries?.
The 2,400 racegoers watched in
horror as the incident took place
before the start of the 1m 2f
handicap at 3.30. Green screens,
normally used for injured horses,
were put up around the stricken
man as he was treated at the scene.
The air ambulance arrived to take
him to hospital and the racecourse
made an announcement at 3.50pm
that the remaining four races would
not take place. BHA Stipendiary
Steward Robert Earnshaw said:
?The racecourse executive took the
decision to abandon racing. The
police were called as it was a serious
accident.?
Haydock is set to go ahead with its
evening meeting tonight, after
which Culture Club are booked for a
concert.
The track?s Twitter feed read:
?Currently Saturday?s fixture will
go ahead as planned.?

fourth race on the card.
He was treated at the scene and an
air ambulance was called to take
him to nearby Whiston Hospital.

track to conduct their inquiries?.
The 2,400 racegoers watched in
horror as the incident took place
before the start of the 1m 2f
handicap at 3.30. Green screens,
normally used for injured horses,
were put up around the stricken
man as he was treated at the scene.
The air ambulance arrived to take
him to hospital and the racecourse
made an announcement at 3.50pm
that the remaining four races would
not take place. BHA Stipendiary
Steward Robert Earnshaw said:
?The racecourse executive took the
decision to abandon racing. The
police were called as it was a serious
accident.?
Haydock is set to go ahead with its
evening meeting tonight, after
which Culture Club are booked for a
concert.
The track?s Twitter feed read:
?Currently Saturday?s fixture will
go ahead as planned.?
