clearly and precisely, while examples and problems provide a ready means
of understanding the theory.
The book may be divided into two parts, basic theory and a.c.
machinery. The former is treated very thoroughly, though it is to be
regretted that the subject of Power Factor Correction is not discussed more
A useful chapter is included on the specifications of wire sizes in
various installations systems though English readers may find the American
gauges troublesome. The concluding chapters are devoted to motors
and the converting machinery, fully up to date information being provided
with easily assimilable descriptions of single-phase motors and various
types of rectifiers.
Mention must also be made of the summary at the end of each chapter,
which in conjunction with the index provides a wealth of information in
quick reference form.

Alternating-Current Bridge Methods. (4th Ed.) By B. Hague, D.Sc,
Ph.D., F.C.G.I., M.I.E.E.
(Pitman. 25s. Pp. 587.)
This book, first published in 1923, has deservedly become a standard
work, and opportunity has been taken in this new edition to incorporate
the latest developments in various branches, and in particular to include
a complete classification of bridges, based on the work of Ferguson.
There are 85 pages devoted to fundamentals which are well worth
detailed study. Then follows a long chapter on apparatus, including
standards, sources and detectors. More could have been included here
on visual indicators (including cathode-ray methods) and the latest forms
of feedback oscillator and amplifier.
Chapter IV details the various forms of bridge in classified order, while
the final chapter discusses the choice of bridge method and the precautions
to be observed in use.
A particularly thorough index, both author and subject, concludes a
work of value to every engineer who has occasion to use, let alone design,
bridge networks.
