Cu1.45 Er0.85 S2 :
A Copper(I) Erbium(III) Sulfide with Cation— CsCu3 Er2 S5 (I) and
16 - 001 Deficient CaAl2 Si2 -Type Structure.
Cu1.45 Er0.85 S2 (II) are obtained besides CuErS2 from the reaction of a 1:1:2
mixture of Cu, Er, and S in a CsCl flux (evacuated silica tubes, 900 ◦ C, 7 d).
Compound (I) crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Cmcm with Z = 4
and compound (II) in the trigonal space group P3m1 with Z = 1. Both compounds contain condensed CuS4 and ErS6 units as dominating building blocks.
The crystal structure of (II) exhibits CdI2 -analogous layers of edge-sharing
[ErS6 ] octahedra and [CuS4 ] tetrahedra which share three cis-oriented edges.
