Synthesis, Structure, and Bonding of the Nonclassical Zintl Phase K5As3Pb3. —
The title compound is prepared by reaction of a stoichiometric mixture of the elements
at 900 °C followed by annealing at 650 °C (sealed Ta tube, 3 weeks, 80—90% yield).
K5As3Pb3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with Z = 4 (single crystal
XRD). The structure contains As3 Pb 53 - crown clusters which are linked via Pb—Pb
bonds to form infinite chains along the b-axis. The As3 Pb53 - cluster represents a new
type of hyperelectronic Zintl cluster with a heavy tetrel framework capped by As.
Although the compound is bonded through intercluster bonding, the extra electrons
