Er2S[SiO4]: An Erbium Sulfide ortho-Oxosilicate with Unusual Sulfide-Anion
Coordination. — Single crystals of the title compound are obtained as byproduct in
the reaction of erbium with sulfur and CdS in a CsCl flux in an evacuated silica tube
(wall-reaction; 900 °C, 10 d). Er2S[SiO4] crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group
Cmce with Z = 8. The crystal structure contains isolated [SiO4]4- units and two crystallographically independent Er3+ cations, which are both eightfold coordinated by six oxygen and two sulfur atoms. The S2- ions are surrounded by four Er3+ in the shape of very
distorted tetrahedra. These excentric [SEr4]10+ tetrahedra are connected via corners and
edges to form layers which are separated by the isolated orthosilicate tetrahedra. —
