Chemoselective Hydrogenation of Substituted Nitroaromatics Using Novel
Water-Soluble Iron Complex Catalysts. — Substituted nitroaromatics (I) are hydrogenated with high chemoselectivity in the presence of Fe(II)—Na2(EDTA) catalytic
system to give the corresponding aniline derivatives (II). Aromatic chloro, carbonyl
and cyano substituents remain unchanged under the reducing reaction conditions. A
biphasic substrate—water system is formed where the Fe(II) catalyst is stabilized in the
aqueous phase by the EDTA ligand and can be easily reused. Thus, the novel method
represents an efficient, environmentally friendly and low-cost alternative to existing
